LSD use by young adults rose from 3.7 percent to 4.2 percent in the same period, according to an article published this month in the journal Addiction.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Roughly 8 percent of young adults used some kind of hallucinogen in 2021, the highest share recorded since at least the 1980s.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Public health officials face a growing societal disconnect over the risks and rewards of recreational drugs. Both marijuana and hallucinogens <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nida.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/2022\/08\/marijuana-and-hallucinogen-use-among-young-adults-reached-all-time-high-in-2021\">registered historic highs<\/a> in young-adult use in 2021, according to federal data.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Broad legalization of recreational cannabis has swept away much of the cultural stigma attached to its use. Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> is exploring <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/09\/health\/psychedelics-mdma-psilocybin-molly-mental-health.html\">potential therapeutic benefits<\/a> from psilocybin and other psychedelics. Middle-class moms are microdosing magic mushrooms, embracing the potential of psychedelics to tamp down depression or addiction or post-traumatic stress.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yet, therapeutic use of psychedelics remains rare. Most young adults who take hallucinogens are engaging in youthful experimentation, not unlike their baby-boomer forebears in the Woodstock era. And those experiments are not without risk.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe main danger I\u2019d be worried about is a bad <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>,\u201d said Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse. \u201cBecause a bad trip can result in suicide.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The new study from researchers at the University of Michigan and Columbia University t<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ed survey data from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/monitoringthefuture.org\/\">Monitoring the Future<\/a>, an ongoing project to track behaviors and attitudes from adolescence into adulthood.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cA doubling of prevalence in just three years is a dramatic increase and raises possible public health concerns,\u201d said Megan Patrick, a study co-author and co-principal investigator of Monitoring the Future at the University of Michigan, of the findings.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Patrick cautioned that the study raises more questions than it answers. Such is the spirit of Monitoring the Future, which posits statistical trends to inspire further study.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really difficult to explain these trends,\u201d she said. \u201cWe have some guesses, but we don\u2019t really know yet.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Men experimented with hallucinogens at a higher rate than women. That finding tracks with other data suggesting that young men lean in to risky behavior more often than young women.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If the overall upward trend continues, young adults may soon be using psychedelic drugs at the same rate as baby boomers in the hippie era.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0A Gallup poll in 1971, near the high-water mark for psychedelics, found that 18 percent of college students <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1972\/02\/10\/archives\/gallup-finds-a-continued-rise-in-use-of-marijuana-and-lsd-on.html\">had used LSD<\/a> or other hallucinogens.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>In 1976, an early Monitoring the Future survey found that 15 percent of 12th graders had <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/monitoringthefuture.org\/data\/Prevalence.html#drug=%22Hallucinogens%22\">used hallucinogens<\/a>. The quotient fell to 9 percent in 1988, rose to 15 percent in 1997, then declined steadily through the 2000s. In 2022, 7 percent of high school seniors said they had tried a hallucinogen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the younger ages, we\u2019ve done a good job in delaying the start of use,\u201d by educating students about how drugs can harm the developing brain, said Sion Harris, an associate professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. \u201cThat has been tremendously successful.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The share of young adults who experiment with hallucinogens, by contrast, has been creeping up: from 3 percent in 2011 to 5 percent in 2016 and 8 percent in 2021, a record high, according to federal data.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Young adults are not taking a lot more LSD, perhaps the best-known hallucinogen. Instead, they are embracing psilocybin, whose therapeutic value has gained currency. Numerous scientific studies have suggested a use for psilocybin and other psychedelic drugs in treating depression, post-traumatic stress, addiction and other mental-health maladies.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/vcresearch.berkeley.edu\/research-unit\/center-science-psychedelics\">Berkeley<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/medicine.yale.edu\/psychiatry\/research\/programs\/clinical_people\/psychedelic\/\">Yale<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/psychiatry\/research\/psychedelics-research.html\">Johns Hopkins<\/a> universities all now operate centers for the scholarly study of psychedelics. Advocates hope that research will ultimately clear the way for the federal decriminalization of psilocybin, MDMA (also known as ecstasy or molly), ketamine and other mind-altering drugs for both therapeutic and recreational use.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Those developments have moved psychedelics from the fringe to the mainstream in science and popular culture. Old fears about adverse reactions and \u201cbad trips\u201d have receded.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Young adults who read about the psychedelic revolution might conclude that, \u201cas long as somebody\u2019s using it medicinally, it\u2019s OK to use it <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly,\u201d Harris said. \u201cNever mind that there are plenty of instances, that don\u2019t get a lot of attention, of bad reactions.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One 2016 paper catalogued a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5549781\/\">sobering list of \u201cadverse effects\u201d<\/a> from psychedelics, including \u201cfear or panic, paranoia, sadness or depressed mood, anger, cognitive effects (e.g. confusion, loss of ego, loss of sanity, delusions, dissociation, depersonalization), perceptual effects (e.g. illusions), and physiological symptoms (e.g. increased heart rate, nausea\/emesis, sympathetic system response).\u201d Sometimes, the symptoms don\u2019t go away when the drug wears off.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yet, the past decade has brought a trove of research suggesting psychedelic therapy can help people with a range of \u201cintractable psychological conditions\u201d that have resisted traditional therapy, said Ne\u015fe Devenot, a postdoctoral associate at the Institute for Research in Sensing at the University of Cincinnati.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cBack in 2010, when I would tell people I was working in psychedelic studies, I would get a lot of confused looks,\u201d Devenot said. \u201cA lot of people would tell me, \u2018Wasn\u2019t that over in the \u201860s?\u2019 I have seen firsthand that in the past decade, the past five years, there\u2019s been this big shift in the average person\u2019s interest in psychedelics.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Devenot said the new study paints an incomplete picture of how young America is responding to the promise of psychedelics in mental healthcare.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, the study lumped together psilocybin and PCP, or angel dust, a drug with no known therapeutic use. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPCP is never included in this conversation about therapeutic potential,\u201d Devenot said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Devenot also questioned the theory that \u201cany kind of nonmedical use\u201d of psilocybin, a hallucinogen with centuries of documented use, is \u201cinherently risky.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Colorado and Oregon have decriminalized psilocybin, and some cities have stopped policing its use, mirroring the broader legalization push for cannabis.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other researchers stress, however, that psilocybin and cannabis can trigger harrowing psychological episodes, heart palpitations and ER visits.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t all just peace, love and light,\u201d Harris said. \u201cThere\u2019s the potential to have bad reactions.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> Inc.
