{"id":579352,"date":"2023-06-19T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-06-19T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/trumps-attacks-on-fbi-doj-create-senate-gop-fault-line\/"},"modified":"2023-06-19T13:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-06-19T10:00:00","slug":"trumps-attacks-on-fbi-doj-create-senate-gop-fault-line","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/trumps-attacks-on-fbi-doj-create-senate-gop-fault-line\/","title":{"rendered":"#Trump\u2019s attacks on FBI, DOJ create Senate GOP fault line"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/64752b48b22f18.95459696.jpeg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Some Republican senators are pumping the brakes on attempts by former President Trump and his allies to villainize the FBI and Department of Justice in the wake of a 37-count indictment against the former president. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s attacks on the FBI are becoming a dividing line in the GOP, just as his claims of widespread election fraud developed into a major fault line within the party in the 2022 midterm election.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Trump has ramped up his rhetoric targeting the Justice Department so aggressively that some lawmakers fear it could provoke violence. As a result, some are urging fellow Republicans to tone down their rhetoric.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said House Republicans who make statements with violent overtones are acting irresponsibly. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re irresponsible to say that. There\u2019s no violent solution to this problem,\u201d Graham said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Graham tried to talk down Trump allies who are comparing the federal indictment of the former president to an act of war by pointing out that Trump will have fair representation in court.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a legal system. He\u2019ll be represented, there will be <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eals, this will go all the way to the Supreme Court,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s a belief on the Republican side that the law doesn\u2019t apply equally to Republicans and Democrats, but that\u2019s no reason to engage in violent activity.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Graham made his comments to reporters after Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) tweeted: \u201cWe have reached a new war phase\u201d and vowed \u201can eye for an eye.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Rep. Clay Higgins (R-La.) made several tactical military references in a tweet after <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> of the indictment broke last week. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a perimeter probe from the oppressors. Hold. rPOTUS has this. Buckle up. 1\/50K know your bridges. Rock stead calm. That is all,\u201d he said, using an acronym to denote the \u201creal president of the United States.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The military uses maps on a scale of 1:50,000, and bridges are strategic points in combat operations. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Some Republican senators fear that echoing Trump\u2019s attacks on federal law enforcement will further polarize the nation and alienate moderate and swing voters, just as Trump\u2019s claims that the 2020 election was stolen turned off many voters last year. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was not too many years ago when the big cry [among Democrats] was, \u2018Defund the police,\u2019 and Republicans were saying, \u2018Are you out of your mind?\u2019 Now, the Republicans are saying defund the Department of Justice, defund the FBI. What are we doing people? Yes, I\u2019m worried,\u201d said Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska). \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t get to a place where justice is in the eye of the beholder, that only if it works for me that justice is fair,\u201d she said. \u201cWe need to believe in the integrity of our institutions and unfortunately this rhetoric does nothing to uphold the integrity and credibility [of the justice system].\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>An ABC News\/Ipsos poll of 910 adults nationwide conducted June 9-10 found that 63 percent of independents think the charges against Trump are \u201cserious.\u201d Forty-five percent of independents said Trump should be charged with a crime, while 33 percent said he should not be charged.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Senate Republican Whip John Thune (S.D.) on Thursday waved away calls by some Republicans to cut Justice Department and FBI funding in response to Trump\u2019s indictment. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to understand, we need a Justice Department,\u201d he told reporters outside the Capitol.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Thune said Justice Department officials need to respond to requests for information from members of Congress but flatly rejected the idea floated by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) in April to cut its funding. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre we going to get rid of the Justice Department? No. I think defunding is a really bad idea,\u201d Thune said.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Thune explained away some of the incendiary rhetoric coming from some GOP lawmakers as political posturing and defended special counsel Jack Smith as a prosecutor with \u201ca job to do.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe important thing for them to demonstrate is that they can apply an equal standard of justice across the board for all,\u201d he said of federal prosecutors. \u201cThey\u2019ve brought these charges now \u2014 or the grand jury has \u2014 so we need to let that process play out.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hours after being arraigned in Miami, Trump told a crowd of supporters at his golf club in Bedminster, N.J., that Smith is \u201ca raging and uncontrolled Trump-hater, as is his wife.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some Senate Democrats are warning that Trump could stoke a violent response such as he did on Jan. 6, 2021, when he urged supporters to \u201cfight like hell\u201d before they stormed the Capitol in an attempt to stop the certification of Biden\u2019s election victory. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was a prosecutor and I tried cases, the standard defense was to attack the prosecutor, to denigrate the FBI and to challenge the motives of the government. It\u2019s a distraction. In this instance, it\u2019s a very dangerous distraction because it degrades and undercuts the public\u2019s trust in our law enforcement institutions, because it\u2019s coming not from a criminal defendant but from elected officials. I think it\u2019s abhorrent,\u201d said Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), a former U.S. attorney. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said lawmakers can\u2019t rule out the possibility that Trump\u2019s rhetoric could incite violence. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving lived through Jan. 6, you cannot dismiss the possibility, but I hope that cooler heads will prevail on both sides of the aisle,\u201d he said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many Republican senators have stayed quiet about Trump\u2019s indictment on 37 federal charges, including violations of the Espionage Act and conspiring to obstruct justice. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But some high-profile Republicans have rallied to his defense by accusing the Justice Department of waging a politically motivated prosecution. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) told Fox News host Sean Hannity that President Biden has \u201cmishandled classified documents in a much more severe manner than Donald Trump ever mishandled classified documents,\u201d alleging there \u201cis a pattern of the FBI not investigating anything with respect to Biden.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He later tweeted, \u201cthere is a two-tier system of justice in this country,\u201d a talking point that other Republicans have used. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Senate Republican Conference Chairman John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) said last week that the indictment looked like \u201can unequal application of justice\u201d and said it \u201cfeels political, and it\u2019s rotten.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A key distinction between Biden\u2019s and Trump\u2019s possession of classified documents is that Biden pledged to cooperate with the Department of Justice and im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely returned classified documents to the country, while the federal indictment of Trump alleges that he sought to obstruct the FBI\u2019s effort to retrieve secret materials.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
