{"id":579432,"date":"2023-06-20T19:14:55","date_gmt":"2023-06-20T16:14:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/mccarthy-doubles-down-on-biden-family-probes-after-hunter-guilty-plea-deal\/"},"modified":"2023-06-20T19:14:55","modified_gmt":"2023-06-20T16:14:55","slug":"mccarthy-doubles-down-on-biden-family-probes-after-hunter-guilty-plea-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/mccarthy-doubles-down-on-biden-family-probes-after-hunter-guilty-plea-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"#McCarthy doubles down on Biden family probes after Hunter guilty plea deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/06\/mccarthykevin_061223gn02_w.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said a plea deal on tax charges for Hunter Biden, President Biden\u2019s son, will not slow down House Republicans\u2019 investigation into the Biden family\u2019s business dealings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt continues to show the two-tier system in America,\u201d McCarthy said of Hunter Biden\u2019s plea deal. \u201cIf you are the president\u2019s leading political opponent, the DOJ tries to literally put you in jail and give you prison time. But if you are the president\u2019s son, you get a sweetheart deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cNow this does nothing to our investigation,\u201d McCarthy told reporters Tuesday morning. \u201cIt actually should enhance our investigation because the DOJ should not be able to withhold any information now saying that there\u2019s a pending investigation. They should be able to provide [House Oversight Committee] Chairman [James] Comer [R-Ky.] with any information that he requires.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hunter Biden agreed to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/y-to-federal-tax-gun-charges\/\">plead guilty to tax crimes<\/a>\u00a0and reached a diversion agreement related to unlawful possession of a weapon. <\/p>\n<p>His attorney, Christopher Clark, said in a statement\u00a0that his understanding was that the matter was resolved, but United States Attorney David C. Weiss\u2019s office said in his own statement\u00a0on Tuesday that the investigation is still ongoing. <\/p>\n<p>Later on Tuesday, McCarthy suggested that the Department of Justice (DOJ) is claiming that the investigation is ongoing to try and withhold information from the House.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow can Hunter Biden plead guilty, no jail time, and the DOJ say there\u2019s still an investigation, try to withhold information to the House? That\u2019s unacceptable and will not stand,\u201d he told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>Pressed on if he thinks that is the DOJ\u2019s intention, McCarthy responded \u201cit has to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cBecause you cannot plead guilty, say you\u2019re not gonna do jail time, and then say you can\u2019t give papers to the U.S. House of Representatives \u2014\u00a0that\u2019s not gonna stand, that\u2019s not gonna work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Asked what the American people can expect from Republicans going forward on investigations, McCarthy said GOP lawmakers will \u201ccontinue to follow whatever information leads us to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republicans have long probed the foreign business dealings of President Biden\u2019s family and their associates, but have so far not produced evidence that the president directly benefited from those dealings or knew any details. The president has denied knowledge of Hunter Biden\u2019s business activities.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>In the past several weeks, the GOP has seized on an FBI tip that President Biden was involved in a bribery scheme with a foreign national. The tip came from what lawmakers in both parties describe as a credible source with secondhand knowledge of the allegation, but has not been verified.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found out lo and behold, even though the FBI tried to hold from us, that in a 1023 form, that people have said that they had to pay the president\u2019s family money for favors,\u201d McCarthy said, in reference to the unverified claim.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy also referenced financial records obtained by Republicans that they say showed millions of dollars moving through shell companies and benefiting members of the president\u2019s family. The records did not show money flowing to President Biden himself.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Comer \u2014\u00a0who said the \u201csweetheart plea deal\u201d was a \u201cslap on the wrist\u201d \u2014\u00a0also said his committee will plow ahead with its investigation into Hunter Biden despite the recent development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHunter Biden is getting away with a slap on the wrist when growing evidence uncovered by the House Oversight Committee reveals the Bidens engaged in a pattern of corruption, influence peddling, and possibly bribery,\u201d Comer said in a statement Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese charges against Hunter Biden and sweetheart plea deal have no impact on the Oversight Committee\u2019s investigation,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe will not rest until the full extent of President Biden\u2019s involvement in the family\u2019s schemes are revealed.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>McCarthy on Tuesday sought to draw a comparison to the federal indictment of former President Trump earlier this month, part of the Justice Department\u2019s investigation into the mishandling of classified documents. Trump pleaded not guilty to all 37 charges.<\/p>\n<p>President Biden is also under investigation by the DOJ for the potential mishandling of classified documents, though the two cases bear significant differences: Trump is accused of obstructing attempts by authorities to regain the documents, including asking his attorneys to lie about their existence or destroy them, while Biden\u2019s attorneys alerted authorities when records were discovered and handed them over.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy, nonetheless, juxtaposed the two on Tuesday as part of his argument that the justice system is two-tiered.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cYou have a sitting president today that now has a son that gets a sweetheart deal, that now the president today has [his] top political opponent indicted and has potential jail time.
