\n Paul McCartney has somewhat belatedly responded to the hysterical speculation that followed his announcement earlier this month that a \u201cnew\u201d Beatles song has been created from a late \u201870s John Lennon demo recording with the assistance of AI.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cBeen great to see such an exciting response to our forthcoming Beatles project,\u201d he wrote on social media<\/a>. \u201cNo one is more excited than us to be sharing something with you later in the year.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cWe\u2019ve seen some confusion and speculation about it,\u201d he continued. \u201cSeems to be a lot of guess work out there. Can\u2019t say too much at this stage but to be clear, nothing has been artificially or synthetically created. It\u2019s all real and we all play on it. We cleaned up some existing recordings \u2013 a process which has gone on for years.<\/p>\n

\n McCartney\u2019s initial announcement of the track during a June 12 BBC interview was relatively clear if short on details \u2014 \u201cIt was a demo that John had that we worked on, and we just finished it up, it\u2019ll be released this year,\u201d he said. \u201cWe were able to take John\u2019s voice and get it pure through this AI, so then we could mix the record as you would normally do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Due to the recent uproar around what AI might mean for the music business \u2014\u00a0and alarm from musicians that it might actually make them obsolete \u2014\u00a0many fans assumed that the announcement meant AI had been used to fabricate a Lennon song and vocal, as the anonymous artist Ghostwriter did earlier this year by creating the song \u201cHeart on My Sleeve,\u201d which featured false, AI-generated vocals from Drake and the Weeknd. (That song ultimately was removed from streaming services for copyright violations, even though the exact legal issues around it remain unclear.) As McCartney clarified today, that was never the case with this \u201cnew\u201d Beatles song.<\/p>\n

\n Although McCartney did not reveal the song\u2019s title, sources say it was a demo recorded during the late 1970s that Lennon\u2019s widow Yoko had sent to the surviving Beatles in the 1990s while they were preparing material for their \u201cAnthology\u201d albums and videos. While the bandmembers and producer Jeff Lynne created two other songs from Lennon demos from the same era \u2014 \u201cFree as a Bird\u201d and \u201cReal Love,\u201d both of which were released on the \u201cAnthology\u201d series<\/a> \u2014\u00a0 and worked on the \u201cnew\u201d song, ultimately it was not considered suitable for release, particularly by George Harrison, one source said. However, Harrison, who died in 2001, did play on the forthcoming recording. <\/p>\n

\n Whether that was due to the sound quality of the recording or the song itself is unclear, but McCartney clearly feels that using a similar version of the AI technology<\/a> that director Peter Jackson used to isolate and clean up voices in the 2021 \u201cGet Back\u201d documentary taken from 1969 film footage \u2014 in which conversations previously obscured by background noise or other voices could be isolated \u2014\u00a0renders the song suitable for release. That technology was also used on the latest expanded reissue in the Beatles\u2019 catalog, the 1966 classic \u201cRevolver.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n However, neither the new song nor \u201cFree as a Bird\u201d and \u201cReal Love\u201d can be considered \u201clost\u201d Beatles tracks \u2014 they\u2019re songs Lennon recorded and app<\/a>arently wrote in the late 1970s, many years after the group had broken up \u2014 nor do many fans feel they\u2019re up to the standards set by the group during its career. The Beatles split up in the fall of 1969 but did not announce the news until the following spring.<\/p>\n

\n In the BBC interview, McCartney called AI \u201ca very interesting thing,\u201d adding, \u201cIt\u2019s something we\u2019re all sort of tackling at the moment and trying to deal with. What it means? I don\u2019t hear that much because I\u2019m not on the internet that much, but people will say to me, \u2018Oh, there\u2019s a track where John is singing one of my songs.\u2019 And it isn\u2019t. It\u2019s just AI All of that is kind of scary, but exciting because it\u2019s the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
