{"id":580011,"date":"2023-06-24T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-06-24T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/trump-keeps-gop-guessing-on-first-primary-debate\/"},"modified":"2023-06-24T13:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-06-24T10:00:00","slug":"trump-keeps-gop-guessing-on-first-primary-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/trump-keeps-gop-guessing-on-first-primary-debate\/","title":{"rendered":"#Trump keeps GOP guessing on first primary debate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/06\/illo-trumpdonald_debates_VM-GN-AP_trumpdebate.jpeg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Questions are swirling around whether former President Trump will participate in August\u2019s Republican primary debate.<\/p>\n<p>Trump, who is leading the crowded GOP primary pack by a large margin in most polls, has been coy about whether he will be on stage with the other candidates come August.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI like to debate. I probably am here because of debates. I don\u2019t mind it at all,\u201d Trump told Fox <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>\u2019s Bret Baier in an interview that aired earlier this week. \u201cBut when you\u2019re 40 points up \u2026. Why would I let these people take shots at me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet some Republicans believe Trump will be itching for the spotlight. It will also serve as an opportunity for him to go toe to toe with his top rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven his previous performances at GOP debates, it\u2019s hard to see how he would miss an opportunity to connect with Republican primary voters,\u201d said Ford O\u2019Connell, a Republican strategist.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, it\u2019s unclear who will even make the debate \u2014 set to take place in Aug. 23 in Milwaukee \u2014 besides Trump and DeSantis. To qualify, candidates will have to be polling at a minimum of 1 percent in at least three national polls, or at 1 percent in two national polls and one early state poll from two of Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who is one of Trump\u2019s most outspoken critics in the Republican field, tried to goad the former president into debating on Thursday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump says he doesn\u2019t \u2018think it\u2019s fair\u2019 for him to have to debate. Crybabies and losers say life isn\u2019t fair. And Trump is both,\u201d Christie tweeted. \u201cWant to be President? Then get in the ring pal.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Some Republicans speculate that Trump might be hesitant to go toe to toe with the former New Jersey governor, who has helped Trump prep for his debates against President Biden in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Chris Christie wasn\u2019t on the debate stage, I think he would be more likely to debate,\u201d said Greg Manz, who worked as a strategic communications adviser during Trump\u2019s 2020 campaign.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChristie\u2019s good and he knows that,\u201d Manz said. \u201cThat\u2019s why Christie was a part of our debate prep team in 2020. Christie knows Trump\u2019s style and his strategies and tactics because he was the one prepping him on what to do.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Christie made this point speaking to conservatives at the Faith and Freedom Coalition\u2019s Road to the Majority Policy Conference in Washington on Friday, pointing out that during Trump\u2019s debate prep, he played Hillary Clinton in 2016 and President Biden 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou won\u2019t be able to sleep thinking about that one tonight,\u201d Christie quipped.<\/p>\n<p>Others argue that Trump has some justification in not wanting to debate.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI think the key here is, right now no one outside of DeSantis is pulling above six percent,\u201d O\u2019Connell said. \u201cWhy would you go up against people that at this point honestly have zero chance of facing you? The only one who could make noise about this is DeSantis and is anyone really going to listen?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Plus, Trump has a history of defying precedent with little-to-no political damage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is my 12th presidential campaign and I feel like the natural laws governing the universe that existed prior to June of 2015 don\u2019t always seem to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ly as crisply as they once did,\u201d said Ralph Reed, an influential conservative and evangelical figure. \u201cHe did things and has done things repeatedly that I was sure he couldn\u2019t get away with and he did.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Reed pointed to the last GOP debate before the Iowa caucuses in 2016 that then-candidate Trump decided to skip. Trump announced that he would boycott the debate amid tension between him and then-Fox News host Megyn Kelly. The move was met with criticism, with many Republicans at the time arguing that Trump was depriving Iowa caucus-goers of their last time to see him before the contests.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was sure he was making a mistake, but he got away with it,\u201d Reed said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the president\u2019s campaign quickly put together an event to raise funds for veterans at Drake University in Des Moines. The Trump campaign said the event brought in $6 million for the Trump Foundation and that the proceeds would be given to 22 organizations. The gathering even drew visits from two of Trump\u2019s lower-polling campaign rivals, Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>While Trump went on to lose Iowa, he ended up sweeping the GOP primary.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 2024 Republican presidential primary contenders, including Trump, were all on hand on Friday and Saturday for the Faith and Freedom Coalition confab.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCandidates do what they think is best for them. From his standpoint, if he goes, they\u2019re all going to take shots at him,\u201d Reed said. \u201cOn the other hand, there is a sense in which if you want to be the standard bearer and want to be the nominee, you gotta show up, which I think is why he\u2019s coming here this weekend.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>However, Reed noted that he has \u201cno idea\u201d whether Trump will actually take part in August\u2019s debate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During his sit-down with Baier earlier this week, Trump seemed much more focused on the idea of taking President Biden on the debate stage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe and I have to definitely debate. That\u2019s what I love,\u201d the former president said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There are also questions surrounding what a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> election debate between Trump and Biden would like if they do end up facing off for a second time. The two men met on the debate stage twice in 2020, though three debates were originally scheduled. The second forum was canceled after Trump was diagnosed with COVID-19 and refused to appear virtually.<\/p>\n<p>And fewer debates took place during last year\u2019s midterm election debates, with candidates in some races only meeting once, and some debates not even taking place. Then-Democratic gubernatorial candidate Katie Hobbs, for example, refused to debate her Republican opponent Kari Lake, citing Lake\u2019s election denialism.\u00a0Hobbs went on to win that race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe future of major political debates is really in question,\u201d O\u2019Connell said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s no doubt among Republicans that Trump will get his message across to GOP primaries voters with or without a debate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s not a wallflower.
