Yeah, he can. The question is, is he the strongest to win the election? I don\u2019t know that answer,\u201d McCarthy said of Trump on\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/video\/2023\/06\/27\/house-speaker-kevin-mccarthy-on-u-s-economy-biden-has-made-us-less-competitive.html\">CNBC<\/a>\u00a0Tuesday morning. \u201cBut can somebody, anybody beat Biden? Yeah, anybody can beat Biden. Can Biden beat other people? Yes, Biden can beat \u2018em. It\u2019s on any given day.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>CNBC Host Joe Kernan had mentioned Trump\u2019s legal woes complicating his candidacy. Those include indictments over his handling of classified documents after he left office and a 2016 hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels.<\/p>\n<p>But McCarthy had earlier expressed confidence in Trump defeating Biden if he is the GOP nominee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan Trump beat Biden? Yeah, he can beat Biden,\u201d McCarthy said on CNBC Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Republicans get to select their nominee. If you want to go for sheer policy to policy, it\u2019s not good for Republicans, it\u2019s good for America. Trump\u2019s policies are better, straightforward, than Biden\u2019s policies,\u201d McCarthy said.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy\u2019s uncertainty about whether Trump is the strongest candidate is notable given how close the Speaker has remained to the former president. Though McCarthy said in the aftermath of\u00a0the Capitol riot on\u00a0Jan. 6, 2021,\u00a0that Trump bore some responsibility for the attack, he visited Trump at Mar-a-Lago weeks later. Last week, McCarthy backed proposals to\u00a0expunge\u00a0Trump\u2019s two impeachments.<\/p>\n<p>But there is skepticism about Trump in McCarthy\u2019s conference. A few members are outwardly critical of the former president in wake of the indictments, and others have endorsed Florida Gov.
