Within hours, he had told the conservative\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2023\/06\/27\/exclusive-speaker-mccarthy-trump-stronger-today-than-he-was-2016\/\">Breitbart News<\/a>\u00a0in an interview that \u201cTrump is stronger today than he was in 2016,\u201d sent out\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/emilybrooksnews\/status\/1673785498798571525?s=20\">sent out<\/a> fundraising\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/burgessev\/status\/1673806110170525697?s=20\">blasts that<\/a> declared Trump \u201cBiden\u2019s strongest opponent\u201d and, according to\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/06\/27\/us\/politics\/mccarthy-trump-candidacy.html\">The New York Times<\/a>, placed a call to Trump for a conversation that sources characterized as an apology.<\/p>\n<p>The stunning episode \u2014 which played out in less than 24 hours \u2014 highlights the delicate balancing act McCarthy is forced to perform when it comes to matters involving Trump, the GOP presidential front-runner who helped him secure the Speaker\u2019s gavel in January and still holds a firm grip on much of the House Republican conference.<\/p>\n<p>But whether or not McCarthy\u2019s efforts Wednesday were enough to land him back in Trump\u2019s good graces remains to be seen.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n        The Hill Elections 2024 coverage<br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Politico reported Wednesday that Trump\u2019s team \u2014 which is known for controlling who is allowed to raise money off the ex-president\u2019s name \u2014 asked McCarthy to remove his fundraising pitch that mentioned Trump, a blast that was part of his damage control.<\/p>\n<p>Trump himself, however, has not yet commented on McCarthy\u2019s 180.<\/p>\n<p>A Trump-world source acknowledged there was \u201ccertainly annoyance\u201d with McCarthy\u2019s comment on CNBC but added that Trump was \u201cpleased\u201d with the Speaker\u2019s Breitbart interview, suggesting that reports of severe tensions were exaggerated.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI think some of this has been overblown. While there was certainly annoyance over his comment, it wasn\u2019t lost on people that the bulk of the interview was McCarthy defending Trump, and most importantly, Trump himself was pleased with the interview McCarthy gave Breitbart yesterday,\u201d the source said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apple.news\/T7zM9N_S2SDKHQ2PypEf8AQ?subscribe=1\">Sign up for the latest from The Hill here<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>Congressional Republicans also sought to downplay the rift.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Ken Buck (Colo.), one of the GOP lawmakers who revolted against Republican House leadership earlier this month, suggested that McCarthy meant it would be difficult to name Trump the strongest candidate now, when the Republican field is still developing.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cDoes another candidate rise and show that sort of personality, that sort of strength of character that he would be willing to take on the swamp? That\u2019s yet to be seen. And I think that\u2019s what Kevin was saying, is this is a long time that we\u2019re gonna see between now and the primary elections,\u201d Buck told CNN in an interview Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd so it\u2019s hard to say that Donald Trump is gonna be the strongest candidate in the future. It\u2019s really a hypothetical and calls for speculation. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) \u2014 a close ally of both Trump and the Speaker \u2014\u00a0pinned the conflict on the media, accusing reporters of blowing GOP divisions out of proportion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe media\u2019s specialty is dividing Republicans. It\u2019s time for Republicans to stop being sucked into playing the dumb <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>. Defeat the Democrat\u2019s America Last agenda and save America,\u201d Greene\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepMTG\/status\/1673769444122697743?s=20\">wrote on Twitter<\/a> on\u00a0Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats, for their part, see McCarthy\u2019s backtrack as more evidence of the strong influence Trump has on the Speaker and his GOP conference.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cDonald Trump, Marjorie Taylor Greene, they control the Republican Party and, you know, you can see it every day,\u201d Rep. McCarthy, then the House minority leader, voted against that impeachment but\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/01\/13\/mccarthy-trump-responsibility-capitol-riot-458975#:~:text=%E2%80%9CThe%20president%20bears%20responsibility%20for,immediate%20action%20by%20President%20Trump.%E2%80%9D\">also accused Trump<\/a>\u00a0of bearing \u201cresponsibility\u201d for the rampage.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Yet when most Republicans, including those in Congress, made clear they were sticking behind Trump, McCarthy quickly reversed course, visiting Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida a few weeks later to patch things up \u2014 a recognition that he needed Trump\u2019s support to rise to the Speakership.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The more recent squabble between Trump and McCarthy comes after somewhat of a honeymoon period between the two top Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after McCarthy secured the speaker\u2019s gavel in January \u2014 following a 15-ballot vote \u2014 the California Republican thanked Trump for helping him win the top job, telling reporters, \u201cI don\u2019t think anybody should doubt his influence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a now-infamous photo, Greene is seen handing a phone on a call with \u201cDT\u201d to Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-Mont.), one of McCarthy\u2019s detractors.<\/p>\n<p>And earlier this month, when McCarthy struck a deal with Biden to raise the debt limit, Trump did not join other conservatives in criticizing the deal \u2014 as other 2024 GOP candidates did \u2014 sparing McCarthy from the challenge of wrangling enough votes amid Trump\u2019s opposition.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy, meanwhile, has appeared to pay back the favor in his first six months as Speaker, catering to Trump\u2019s best interests on a number of occasions.<\/p>\n<p>His committee chairmen launched an investigation into Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg after he indicted Trump, requested information from special counsel Jack Smith as he closed in on his own charges and, just last week, McCarthy\u00a0endorsed an effort to expunge Trump\u2019s first and second impeachments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt should never have gone through,\u201d he said of both impeachment votes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Brett Samuels contributed.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
