\n Nonbinary actor Liv Hewson, who stars as teen Vanessa \u201cVan\u201d Palmer in Yellowjackets<\/em>, is opening up about why they still wouldn\u2019t submit themselves for this year\u2019s Emmy Awards after seeing two nonbinary actors win Tony Awards.<\/p>\n

\n Earlier in June, J. Harrison Ghee and Alex Newell\u00a0became the first\u00a0openly nonbinary actors\u00a0to win at the awards show that recognizes excellence in live Broadway theater. Ghee won the Tony for best lead actor in a musical for their performance in Some Like It Hot<\/em>. Newell won best featured actor in a musical for their role in Shucked<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cTo see and hear nonbinary people on stages like that, talking about themselves, loudly and explicitly and proudly, that\u2019s incredible,\u201d Hewson told Teen Vogue<\/em> <\/a>in an interview published online Wednesday. \u201cI love it and I\u2019m all about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n But, even after hearing their moving acceptance speeches, Hewson stands by their decision to remove themselves from the Emmys race despite being eligible for their role in the hit Showtime series<\/a>. \u201cMy issue is so structural, I don\u2019t think it would be honest for me to attempt to work within this system,\u201d they explained.<\/p>\n

\n Hewson proceeded to break down their thought process about it all, saying, \u201cBest-case scenario, career-wise, I, hypothetically, would be nominated for an Emmy, which would be an honor. Then the best-case scenario is that I would, hypothetically, win. And then I would go home with a trophy that says \u2018actress\u2019 on it. I don\u2019t want that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n The Dramaworld<\/em> star also noted that even if they did win and got the opportunity to \u201ctalk about being nonbinary with the trophy in my hand, hypothetically, the dynamic at play is\u00a0still<\/em>\u00a0that there\u2019s a category for men and a category for women.\u201d They explained that they have no desire to get onstage with \u201cthe best woman award.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n \u201cThe bewilderment I have is that acting is the only category that\u2019s separated by sex,\u201d Hewson added. \u201cWe take for granted that this is how the world should work, but gender-neutral awards exist in every category but this one. There are multiple ceremonies where they don\u2019t exist at all, so it\u2019s absolutely possible. Isn\u2019t it a little bizarre that there\u2019s one job that\u2019s about men and women and the rest of them aren\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Hewson joins several other actors, including Emma Corrin and Bella Ramsey, who have been open about wanting gender-neutral acting awards.<\/p>\n

\n Although the Emmy Awards haven\u2019t decided to make any changes to its categories, a nominee or winner of any actor\/actress category can request for the more gender-neutral title \u201cPerformer\u201d to be displayed on their nomination certificate and Emmy statuette.<\/p>\n

\n As for other organizations, the Independent Spirit Awards, Grammys, Gotham Awards, British Independent Film Awards and MTV Movie & TV Awards have already adopted gender-neutral categories.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
