If the colleges of this country are required to ignore a thing that matters, it will not just go away. It will take\u00a0longer\u00a0for racism to leave us.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The court invalidated Harvard\u2019s and\u00a0University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\u2019s (UNC)\u00a0admissions policies by ruling they did not comply with the 14th Amendment\u2019s guarantee of equal protection.<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n        Supreme Court upends affirmative action in college admissions<br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n        Sotomayor\u2019s biting dissent: Ruling rolls back \u2018decades of precedent and momentous progress\u2019<br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>Chief Justice Roberts wrote the majority opinion, saying that both Harvard and UNC\u00a0\u201clack sufficiently focused and measurable objectives warranting the use of race, unavoidably employ race in a negative manner, involve racial stereotyping, and lack meaningful end points.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ruling delivered a blow to supporters of affirmative action, which the Supreme Court laid the groundwork for in 1978 when it decided a challenge to the University of California\u2019s system that reserved 16 out of 100 seats for members of certain minority groups.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson previously served on Harvard\u2019s Board of Overseers until last spring and agreed to recuse herself from the school\u2019s case during her confirmation hearing. She also argued that \u201cignoring race just makes it matter more,\u201d noting that taking away the consideration of race in college admissions will not translate to life experiences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith let-them-eat-cake obliviousness, today, the majority pulls the ripcord and announces \u2018colorblindness for all\u2019 by legal fiat,\u201d Jackson wrote. \u201cBut deeming race irrelevant in law does not make it so in life.
