{"id":580818,"date":"2023-06-30T12:28:44","date_gmt":"2023-06-30T09:28:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/gen-zers-make-difficult-employees-managers-say\/"},"modified":"2023-06-30T12:28:44","modified_gmt":"2023-06-30T09:28:44","slug":"gen-zers-make-difficult-employees-managers-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/gen-zers-make-difficult-employees-managers-say\/","title":{"rendered":"#Gen Zers make \u2018difficult\u2019 employees, managers say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/06\/youngofficeworker_062923_adobestock_gen-z.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Three-quarters of bosses find Generation Z workers a trifle difficult, a corporate survey has found.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A poll of 1,344 managers and business leaders by ResumeBuilder.com found that 74 percent consider Gen Z employees <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.resumebuilder.com\/3-in-4-managers-find-it-difficult-to-work-with-genz\/\">more challenging than older staffers<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Pressed for specifics, employers did not mince words.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey think they\u2019re better than you, smarter than you, more capable than you, and they will tell you to your face,\u201d said Akpan Ukeme, head of human resources at SGK Global Shipping Services.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Generation Z is the youngest cohort in the American workforce, with birth years starting around 1997. Many surveys and studies have labored to define them. The findings suggest they have not gone quietly into their cubicles.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A Gallup report termed them \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/404693\/generation-disconnected-data-gen-workplace.aspx\">Generation Disconnected<\/a>,\u201d noting that Gen Z is less likely than older generations to be actively engaged in work and more likely to suffer stress and burnout.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A study by McKinsey &amp; Company, the management consultancy, found Gen Zers <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/sustainable-inclusive-growth\/future-of-america\/how-does-gen-z-see-its-place-in-the-working-world-with-trepidation\">restless in their jobs<\/a>, more likely to report hostile work environments and health problems both physical and mental. Three-quarters of Gen Z employees said they were actively seeking other jobs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the new survey, taken in April by the survey platform Pollfish, half of employers said they find it difficult to work with Generation Z most or all of the time. Two-thirds said they are more likely to fire Gen Z workers than older staffers, sometimes in the first week of employment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The top reason for the firings? Generation Z is \u201ctoo easily offended.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Managers said they struggle with Generation Z workers for other reasons: Lack of motivation. Lack of productivity. Poor communication skills. Short attention span. An excessive sense of entitlement. Occasional dishonesty. Too few technological skills, or too many.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve butted heads more than once with a Gen Z employee,\u201d Ukeme said in the survey. \u201cSince our company is online-based, they think they know everything about the digital world, and that they can teach me.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Many Gen Zers entered the workforce at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. They lacked facetime and human contact at a foundational moment in their careers. The COVID disconnect may have left them stunted, at least in professional terms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese were the folks who never got the foundation that other generations had coming to work, because they were remote,\u201d said Stacie Haller, chief career advisor at ResumeBuilder.com.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou learn a lot by being onsite in the early years of your career. What you learn is how to interact on a team, how to accept positive criticism, how to give positive feedback. This generation didn\u2019t get any of that, and then they were thrown into a job without any of those skills.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>On the brighter side, employers have found that Gen Z staffers report to work brimming with ideals and ambitions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompared to other generations, I find Gen Z to be highly innovative and adaptable,\u201d said Adam Garfield, marketing director at Hairbro. \u201cThey are not afraid to challenge the status quo and bring new ideas to the table. They also value authenticity and transparency and expect companies to be <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a>ly responsible and ethical.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Garfield faults the next generation only on interpersonal relations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWhile they are proficient in using digital communication tools,\u201d he said, \u201cthey may lack some of the interpersonal skills required for face-to-face interactions.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Research by Deloitte has found a divide between Generation Z workers and their employers <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deloittedigital.com\/us\/en\/blog-list\/2023\/gen-z-research-report.html\">around sharing feelings<\/a>. Gen Zers ranked empathy as a crucial quality in a boss. Bosses did not agree. Nearly three-tenths of Gen Z workers said they had struggled with mental health because of their boss.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Haller said the new survey points to a need for employers to coach and mentor Gen Z hires and for a more nuanced interview process.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe big takeaway is, obviously we need to fix this,\u201d she said. \u201cGen Z, they don\u2019t want to get fired. They\u2019re very stressed out.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The survey asked employers which generation they would prefer to hire, given their misgivings about Generation Z. Management\u2019s response: We prefer millennials.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Millennials, born between 1981 and 1996, are well into their working years. Not so long ago, however, they struggled with some of the same ennui now afflicting Generation Z.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>A <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/238073\/millennials-work-live.aspx?thank-you-report-form=1\">2016 Gallup study<\/a>, published when the youngest millennials were turning 20, found that only 29 percent of working millennials felt engaged in their jobs. Most millennials were actively seeking other work. Many felt misunderstood. Employers struggled to connect with them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Seven years later, many millennials have ascended to management. Now, they and their older colleagues are struggling to figure out the next generation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery generation coming into the workforce has some talk about them,\u201d Haller said. \u201cThe millennials were entitled, and no one wanted to work with them.
