Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the former House speaker, after Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts quoted her in his majority ruling striking down President Biden\u2019s student loan forgiveness program.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The court ruled 6-3 that the program, which would have forgiven thousands of dollars in student loan debt for many borrowers, that the Biden administration had not received congressional authority to grant the forgiveness.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Roberts quoted in the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/opinions\/22pdf\/22-506_nmip.pdf\">majority opinion<\/a> comments that Pelosi gave during a press conference in July 2021, in which she said Biden did not have the authority to cancel student loans by executive order, only delay it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople think that the President of the United States has the power for debt forgiveness.\u00a0He does not. He can postpone.\u00a0He can delay.\u00a0But he does not have that power.\u00a0That has to be an act of Congress,\u201d Pelosi said at the time. <\/p>\n<p>Many GOP lawmakers chimed in after the ruling was handed down to call attention to her inclusion in Roberts\u2019 opinion. <\/p>\n<p>Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SpeakerMcCarthy\/status\/1674795494244249606?s=20\">tweeted<\/a> that the court \u201ccalled out\u201d Pelosi with the reference.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI agree with her for once!\u201d McCarthy said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Kevin Hern (R-Okla.) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/repkevinhern\/status\/1674805222676340743\">posted<\/a> an image on his <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> with the quote from Pelosi, writing \u201cEven former Speaker Nancy Pelosi agrees.\u201d Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.) and former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepKenBuck\/status\/1674798090619097095?s=20\">also<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kayleighmcenany\/status\/1674789655760482310?s=20\">quoted<\/a> her.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) and Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (R-Pa.) noted that \u201ceven\u201d Pelosi agreed that Biden did not have the authority to push the proposal forward.<\/p>\n<p>Pelosi said in a statement on Friday after the ruling was released that the court\u2019s majority \u201ccruelly denied\u201d debt relief to 40 million Americans in need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn doing so, the Court allows a crisis of debt to continue holding back families from buying homes, starting businesses and making ends meet,\u201d she said. \u201cWrongly, the Majority Opinion in this case ignores the convincing arguments on the President\u2019s legal authority that were made in the last year by the Department of Education and by former House Education Committee Chairman George Miller.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>She vowed that the fight to provide relief is \u201cnot over,\u201d echoing Biden\u2019s response to the decision. <\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s forgiveness plan would have cleared up to $10,000 in debt for borrowers making up to $125,000 per year. It would have forgiven up to $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The administration argued that the Higher Education Opportunities for Students Act, which allows the education secretary to \u201cwaive or modify\u201d federal student aid programs in cases of national emergency, gave the president the authority for the plan, coming amid the COVID-19 national emergency. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>But Roberts argued the plan was not a modification or waiver and went beyond clear congressional authorization.<\/p>\n<p>A source close to Pelosi told The Hill that the comments cited in the majority opinion came early on in the national debate on student loan forgiveness and a year before Biden put forward his plan.<\/p>\n<p>They said the former House Speaker found the arguments in favor of the plan to be persuasive and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pelosi.house.gov\/news\/press-releases\/pelosi-statement-on-president-biden-s-historic-student-debt-relief\">issued<\/a>\u00a0a statement declaring her support for it last August.
