font-size: revert;\">Story at a glance<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<ul>\n<li>Health experts worry about the physical toll remote work might have on some people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<ul>\n<li>Their main concern is\u00a0that remote work promotes a\u00a0more\u00a0sedentary lifestyle<strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0which can contribute to blood clots, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<ul>\n<li>Remote work can also lead to increased eyestrain and make it easier for workers to engage in bad habits like continuous snacking, smoking or drinking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<p>The explosion of remote work in recent years may come with a physical toll.Three years after the arrival of COVID-19 <a href=\"https:\/\/remotepad.com\/what-is-remote-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">triggered a mass exodus from offices<\/a>,\u00a0about 22 million\u00a0Americans\u00a0were still working fully remotely\u00a0as of March 2023,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>according to Pew Research Center data.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The shift to remote work has\u00a0been life-changing for\u00a0many working adults<strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0like those\u00a0who have\u00a0disabilities or are caregivers to family members, and surveys show Americans as a whole love working from home.<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0doing so\u00a0has its downsides.\u00a0Remote work has been linked to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2022-64857-001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">poorer sleep, trouble with relaxing<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0mental health concerns.\u00a0And it poses a risk to physical health, as well.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_more_sedentary_lifestyle_can_lead_to_blood_clots_long-term_health_issues\"><\/span><strong>A more sedentary lifestyle can lead to blood clots, long-term health issues.\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When it comes to the physical toll of remote work, health experts are most concerned about\u00a0teleworkers\u2019\u00a0lack of movement during the day.<\/p>\n<p>The world\u00a0has been\u00a0struggling with a physical inactivity crisis\u00a0for years.\u00a0In 2008, about 31 percent of people 15 years or older and older\u00a0were \u201cinsufficiently physically active,\u201d\u00a0according to World Health Organization\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/data\/gho\/indicator-metadata-registry\/imr-details\/3416\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">data.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And that\u00a0crisis <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears to have been\u00a0exacerbated\u00a0by\u00a0COVID-related\u00a0lockdowns\u00a0and potentially worsened by remote work,\u00a0according to Ross Arena, a professor of physical therapy at the University of Illinois, Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the big questions is are we going to bounce back? Or are we going to\u00a0become the new even worse normal where the world is moving even less,\u201d said\u00a0Arena.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The\u00a0average remote worker\u00a0just takes\u00a016 steps from their bed to their workstation, according to a\u00a02022\u00a0survey\u00a0from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uprightpose.com\/the-health-dilemma-of-the-work-from-home-era\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Upright,<\/a>\u00a0an app that promotes good back health.\u00a0And\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7938758\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">multiple<\/a>\u00a0studies show such workers are physically less active than their office-going counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>That same survey also found\u00a0that\u00a054 percent of remote and hybrid workers believe that their movement during the workday has shrunk by 50 percent or more over the past year.<\/p>\n<p>One\u00a02021\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/chrome-extension\/\/bdfcnmeidppjeaggnmidamkiddifkdib\/viewer.html?file=https:\/\/longevity.stanford.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Sedentary-Brief.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">analysis<\/a>\u00a0from Standford University found that between 2007 and 2016\u00a0the average\u00a0time\u00a0American adult spent sitting\u00a0increased from\u00a05.5 to 6.4 hours a day.\u00a0By April 2020, 40 percent of U.S. adults sat more than eight hours a day.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>One\u00a0worry\u00a0associated with a\u00a0mainly sedentary\u00a0lifestyle\u00a0is blood clots.\u00a0Sitting for too long can\u00a0increase a person\u2019s chance\u00a0of\u00a0developing a blood clot like\u00a0deep\u00a0vein thrombosis,\u00a0or a clot that forms in veins deep in the body,\u00a0which can then <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> up to the lungs\u00a0and\u00a0cause\u00a0a pulmonary embolism,\u00a0or a blockage of blood flow.\u00a0A pulmonary embolism\u00a0can in\u00a0turn\u00a0stop\u00a0oxygen\u00a0from\u00a0entering the bloodstream, damaging organs,\u00a0and can quickly become life-threatening.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone at any age is at risk of developing a blood clot, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/dvt\/features\/blood-clot-risk.html#:~:text=Who%20is%20at%20risk%20for,can%20increase%20a%20person's%20risk.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>\u00a0(CDC), but\u00a0there are risk factors that increase someone\u2019s odds of developing one.<\/p>\n<p>Older adults and those with people with clotting disorders are the\u00a0most at risk of developing a blood clot due to inactivity,\u00a0according to the CDC.\u00a0A\u00a0recent\u00a0surgery, hospitalization or pregnancy, cancer and some types of cancer treatments can also be risk factors.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>To avoid blood clots, health experts encourage remote workers to\u00a0stay hydrated and to get\u00a0up from their desks and move around every two to three hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the same rationale as\u00a0encouraging individuals at risk for clotting to get up and walk on long flights and drinking water,\u201d said\u00a0Carnethon.<\/p>\n<p>Not only can little movement lead to\u00a0more\u00a0im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te risks like blood clots, but it can contribute to long-term health issues as well.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Unless remote workers make a conscious effort to exercise, being sedentary\u00a0throughout the day puts workers at risk of putting on weight,\u00a0and increasing insulin resistance,\u00a0raising\u00a0their odds of developing cardiovascular disease\u00a0and diabetes, according to Arena.<\/p>\n<p>Physical activity has also been linked to improving bone and\u00a0musculoskeletal health and reducing the risk of developing dementia, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/chronicdisease\/resources\/publications\/factsheets\/physical-activity.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the CDC.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>About\u00a03.2 million deaths a year\u00a0are\u00a0the result of\u00a0physical inactivity, according\u00a0to the World Health Organization.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Excess_screen_time_can_worsen_eyesight_cause_migraines\"><\/span><strong>Excess screen time can worsen eyesight,\u00a0cause\u00a0migraines\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>More than half of remote workers reported experiencing\u00a0an\u00a0increase in\u00a0eyestrain\u00a0during the first year of the pandemic, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uprightpose.com\/the-health-dilemma-of-the-work-from-home-era\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a survey<\/a>\u00a0of 2,000\u00a0at-home and\u00a0hybrid workers.<\/p>\n<p>This could be linked to the extra number of hours remote workers spend staring at screens compared to their office-going counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>One\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.allaboutvision.com\/conditions\/computer-vision-syndrome\/have-screens-changed-vision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">survey<\/a>\u00a0from All About Vision\u00a0found that a person\u00a0working from home spends\u00a0an average of\u00a013 hours\u00a0a day\u00a0looking\u00a0at a screen\u00a0a day,\u00a0be it their laptop,\u00a0phone\u00a0or television\u00a0\u2014\u00a0over\u00a0two hours more than\u00a0what the average on-site worker spends staring at a screen.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The same\u00a0survey found that 68 percent of remote\u00a0workers\u00a0reported new\u00a0eye or vision problems since they started working from home.<\/p>\n<p>Those complaints of worsening eyesight make sense, according to\u00a0Mercedes\u00a0Carnethon, vice president of preventative medicine at Northwestern\u00a0Feinberg School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I\u2019m working remotely and I\u2019m spending five hours a day in meetings, that\u2019s five hours of blue light exposure,\u201d she said. \u201cIf I had been working in an office and meeting with people in person, I would have a need to adjust my vision to see things further away and closer which helps to, I think, keep the eyes healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carnethon\u00a0added that people who look at screens for\u00a0long periods\u00a0of time are less likely to\u00a0blink as\u00a0frequently\u00a0compared to people not starting at a screen. This habit can contribute to dry eyes,\u00a0which, if\u00a0left untreated,\u00a0can turn into a chronic problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a significant quality of life issue,\u201d said\u00a0Carnethon. \u201cAnd if you end up with eyestrain or vision changes\u00a0that are sped up due to staring at\u00a0screens\u2026headaches and other uncomfortable downsides are very real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other painful\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6371992\/#:~:text=Computer%20vision%20syndrome%2C%20also%20referred,blurred%20vision%2C%20and%20dry%20eyes.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">side effects<\/a>\u00a0associated with\u00a0staring at screens too long are double vision, blurred\u00a0vision\u00a0and\u00a0neck pain.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Working_from_home_can_make_it_easier_to_pick_up_%E2%80%94_or_indulge_%E2%80%94_bad_habits\"><\/span><strong>Working from home\u00a0can make it easier to pick up \u2014 or indulge \u2014\u00a0bad habits<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Working from home can make it easier for some people to continuously snack throughout the day,\u00a0which can lead to unwanted weight gain, according to\u00a0Carnethon.<\/p>\n<p>It can also make it easier\u00a0for some people to indulge in habits like smoking and drinking too much.<\/p>\n<p>For people working in an office, opportunities to smoke\u00a0are limited,\u00a0and commutes often prevent people from having after-work drinks\u00a0the moment the workday ends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you are working from home without that sense of accountability, you could potentially see someone just sitting\u00a0at their desk smoking while they work,\u201d she said. \u201cOr pour that drink at 5 o\u2019clock because they\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have to drive home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One out of five U.S. workers\u00a0admitted\u00a0to having used alcohol, marijuana or another recreational drug while working remotely\u00a0in 2021,\u00a0according\u00a0to a\u00a0national survey\u00a0that year\u00a0from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sierratucson.com\/selfmedicationnation\/?ee=1&amp;fr=18h1688151496\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sierra Tuscon,<\/a>\u00a0a\u00a0mental health\u00a0treatment\u00a0center in Arizona.<\/p>\n<p>Out of those who used, 73 percent said that if their employer forced them to return to the office they would \u201cmiss the opportunity to use marijuana, alcohol, and other\u00a0recreational\u00a0drugs during their workday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, 22 percent of those who used said they have\u00a0participated\u00a0in a virtual work call while under the influence of alcohol,\u00a0cannabis\u00a0or\u00a0another recreational drug.<\/p>\n<p><!-- Article Footer Copyright --><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"article-copyright\">Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
