Some studies have claimed that smaller amounts of alcohol are good for you. Others say that any amount of booze is bad for your body.<\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organization (WHO) recently took the latter stance. The agency <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/europe\/news\/item\/04-01-2023-no-level-of-alcohol-consumption-is-safe-for-our-health\" data-ylk=\"slk:said in January;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">said in January <\/a>that \u201cwhen it comes to alcohol consumption, there is no safe amount that does not affect health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot talk about a so-called safe level of alcohol use,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/cmsdata\/215619\/Biography%20Carina%20Ferreira-Borges.pdf\" data-ylk=\"slk:Carina Ferreira-Borges;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Carina Ferreira-Borges<\/a>, acting unit lead for noncommunicable disease management and regional adviser for alcohol and illicit drugs in the WHO Regional Office for Europe, said in a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/europe\/news\/item\/04-01-2023-no-level-of-alcohol-consumption-is-safe-for-our-health\" data-ylk=\"slk:statement;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">statement<\/a>. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter how much you drink \u2014 the risk to the drinker\u2019s health starts from the first drop of any alcoholic beverage. The only thing that we can say for sure is that the more you drink, the more harmful it is \u2014 or, in other words, the less you drink, the safer it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But there have been studies that found small amounts of red wine and other forms of alcohol may be beneficial for your health, leaving the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> public understandably confused. So what are you supposed to think? Here\u2019s what the data and doctors have to say about the potential impact of alcohol on your health.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Doctors_understand_why_its_confusing_too\"><\/span><strong>Doctors understand why it&#8217;s confusing too.<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cAlcohol is such a complex substance, and the confusion is understandable,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/phmtox.migrate.natsci.msu.edu\/people\/faculty\/alan.aspx\" data-ylk=\"slk:Jamie Alan;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Jamie Alan<\/a>, an associate professor of pharmacology and toxicology at Michigan State University, tells Yahoo Life. \u201cIt has variable effects in the body depending on how much a person consumes and how often a person consumes it. To make matters more complicated, there is conflicting data about the benefits of alcohol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alcohol is also deeply embedded in many cultures, including American culture, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/yu-ming-ni\" data-ylk=\"slk:Dr. Yu-Ming Ni;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Dr. Yu-Ming Ni<\/a>, a cardiologist at MemorialCare Heart and Vascular Institute at Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, Calif., tells Yahoo Life. \u201cAlcohol has been around since basically the dawn of humanity,\u201d he says. \u201cMany cultures with relatively healthy diets and longevity have some amount of alcohol in their diets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The data has also been confusing, he says. \u201cStudies haven\u2019t shown a difference in bad outcomes for those who drink very little alcohol,\u201d Ni says. \u201cIt\u2019s when you get above levels of none or little to moderate intakes \u2014 two drinks per day for men and one drink a day for women \u2014 that you see a clear issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some studies have shown that alcohol is good for your health, making things even more confusing, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/wexnermedical.osu.edu\/find-a-doctor\/jim-liu-md-42980\" data-ylk=\"slk:Dr. Jim Liu;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Dr. Jim Liu<\/a>, a cardiologist at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, tells Yahoo Life. \u201cThere have been studies with mixed results when it comes to alcohol and cardiovascular health,\u201d he says. \u201cSome have indicated alcohol is beneficial, whereas others show no benefit or that it is detrimental.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A lot of the studies are observational versus long-term randomized trials, which means the findings can be influenced by other variables, such as the type of alcohol someone drinks, how much they drink and the characteristics of the drinker, Liu says. \u201cThis can make it difficult to give a firm, definitive guideline,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Still, \u201cthere is no recommendation to start drinking in moderation if someone does not drink,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/rutgershealth.org\/provider\/pallavi-solanki\" data-ylk=\"slk:Dr. Pallavi Solanki;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Dr. Pallavi Solanki<\/a>, director of the Advanced Heart Failure and Mechanical Circulatory Support Program at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, tells Yahoo Life.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_have_studies_shown_about_the_impact_of_alcohol_on_health\"><\/span><strong>What have studies shown about the impact of alcohol on health?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There have been <em>a lot<\/em> of studies about the impact of alcohol on health, and results vary. However, these are some of the biggest findings:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"caas-list caas-list-bullet\">\n<li>\n<p>A <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jacc.org\/doi\/10.1016\/j.jacc.2023.04.015?TRILIBIS_EMULATOR_UA=Mozilla%2f5.0+(Windows+NT+6.1%3b+Win64%3b+x64%3b+rv%3a57.0)+Gecko%2f20100101+Firefox%2f57.0\" data-ylk=\"slk:study;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">study<\/a> of 53,064 people published in the <em>Journal of the American College of Cardiology<\/em> earlier this month found that people who engage in light to moderate drinking and moderate drinking had a lower risk of major adverse cardiovascular events because, in essence, the substance can help people feel less stressed.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>An <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(18)31310-2\/fulltext\" data-ylk=\"slk:analysis;cpos:10;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">analysis<\/a> of 694 data sources published in the <em>Lancet <\/em>found that, compared with nondrinkers, people who had one drink a day had a 0.5% increased risk of developing one of 23 alcohol-related health problems, including breast cancer and tuberculosis. The risks increased with each drink, and those who had five drinks per day increased their risk of health issues by 37% compared with those who don\u2019t drink alcohol.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>A study of nearly 1,500 women published in the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:11;pos:1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.3109\/02813432.2015.1067515\" data-ylk=\"slk:Scandinavian Journal of Public Health Care;cpos:11;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\"><em>Scandinavian Journal of Public Health Care <\/em><\/a>found that those who drank beer once or twice a week had a 30% lower risk of heart attack than those who drank beer more than twice a week, or had no beer at all. However, the study also found a link between high spirits consumption and an increased risk of death from cancer.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>A study of more than 38,000 men published in the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:12;pos:1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12519921?dopt=Citation\" data-ylk=\"slk:New England Journal of Medicine;cpos:12;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\"><em>New England Journal of Medicine<\/em><\/a> found that those who drank alcohol at least three or four days a week had a lower risk of heart attack than men who drank alcohol less than once a week.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>A meta-analysis published in the journal <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:13;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/circulationaha.117.030387\" data-ylk=\"slk:Circulation;cpos:13;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\"><em>Circulation<\/em><\/a> determined that \u201cmounting evidence\u201d suggests that ethanol and polyphenols in wine can be protective against chronic cardiovascular diseases.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>A <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:14;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/fullarticle\/1868537\" data-ylk=\"slk:study;cpos:14;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">study<\/a> of 783 older adults living in the Chianti region of Italy, whose diets were naturally rich in resveratrol\u2014a compound found in red wine\u2014found no link between resveratrol levels and rates of heart disease, cancer or death.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>A <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:15;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-022-28735-5\" data-ylk=\"slk:study;cpos:15;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">study<\/a> of nearly 37,000 people published in the journal <em>Nature <\/em>found that having just one pint of beer or glass of wine a day can shrink the overall volume of the brain \u2014 and the damage was greater the more people drank.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_the_current_recommendations_around_alcohol\"><\/span><strong>What are the current recommendations around alcohol?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:16;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/alcohol\/faqs.htm#:~:text=To%20reduce%20the%20risk%20of,days%20when%20alcohol%20is%20consumed.\" data-ylk=\"slk:Federal guidelines;cpos:16;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Federal guidelines<\/a> don\u2019t encourage people to drink alcohol who wouldn\u2019t otherwise have it.
