{"id":581246,"date":"2023-07-03T19:56:47","date_gmt":"2023-07-03T16:56:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/harvard-faces-civil-rights-complaint-over-its-legacy-admissions\/"},"modified":"2023-07-03T19:56:47","modified_gmt":"2023-07-03T16:56:47","slug":"harvard-faces-civil-rights-complaint-over-its-legacy-admissions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/harvard-faces-civil-rights-complaint-over-its-legacy-admissions\/","title":{"rendered":"#Harvard faces civil rights complaint over its legacy admissions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/06\/649df0f2bd9f07.05289030.jpeg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Harvard is facing a civil rights complaint over the school\u2019s legacy admissions after the Supreme Court ruled against race-conscious admissions practices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach year, Harvard College grants special preference in its admissions process to hundreds of mostly white students \u2014 not because of anything they have accomplished, but rather solely because of who their relatives are,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/lawyersforcivilrights.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Federal-Civil-Rights-Complaint-Against-Harvard.pdf\">according to the complaint<\/a> filed by Lawyers for Civil Rights (LCR) on behalf of Black and Latino groups based in New England. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The groups argue that legacy admissions, a process that gives priority in the college <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lications process to children of alumni or applicants related to wealthy donors, boosts white students over students of color.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe students who receive this preferential treatment \u2014 based solely on familial ties \u2014 are overwhelmingly white. Nearly 70% of donor-related applicants are white, and nearly 70% of legacy applicants are also white,\u201d the complaint reads.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The new complaint comes after the Supreme Court last week decided to effectively end affirmative action, ruling 6-3 against race-conscious admissions policies at Harvard and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and restricting the use of race as a factor in college admissions.<\/p>\n<p>The decision drew starkly different reactions from Republicans and Democrats, with many on the left decrying it as a blow to diversity in the college admissions process.<\/p>\n<p>In remarks after the court\u2019s decision, President Biden said <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2023\/06\/29\/remarks-by-president-biden-on-the-supreme-courts-decision-on-affirmative-action\/\">he was directing<\/a> the Department of Education \u201cto analyze what practices help build a more inclusive and diverse student bodies and what practices hold that back, practices like legacy admissions and other systems that expand privilege instead of opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The civil rights complaint against Harvard further argues that preferential treatment to donor and legacy relatives is \u201cconferred without regard to the applicant\u2019s credentials or merits\u201d and is therefore \u201cnot justified by any educational necessity.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The complaint, dated Monday, was filed by LCR \u2014 on behalf of the Chica Project, the African Community Economic Development of New England, and the Greater Boston Latino Network \u2014 before the Department of Education\u2019s Office for Civil Rights, alleging violations of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The executive Director of LCR, Iv\u00e1n Espinoza-Madrigal, said in a release that \u201cthere\u2019s no birthright to Harvard\u201d and noted the Supreme Court\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/opinions\/22pdf\/20-1199_hgdj.pdf\">recent opinion<\/a> that \u201celiminating racial discrimination means eliminating all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere should be no way to identify who your parents are in the college application process. Why are we rewarding children for privileges and advantages accrued by prior generations?
