\n Europe\u2019s first \u201clight<\/span>ning hunter\u201d has generated striking animations of severe storms hitting the Earth.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Built by Italian firm Leonardo, the system is the first satellite instrument that can continuously detect lightning across Europe and Africa.<\/p>\n

The imager is comprised of four powerful cameras. <\/span>Each of them can capture 1,000 images per second, day and night,<\/span> and detect a single lightning bolt faster than the blink of an eye. <\/span><\/p>\n

Algorithms then send the data back to Earth, for use in weather<\/span> forecasts, climate research, and\u00a0air transport safety.<\/p>\n

According to Eumetsat, the European weather agency, severe storms have caused an estimated \u20ac500bn of damage over the past 40 years in Europe alone. The lightning imager could mitigate the impact.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSevere storms are often preceded by abrupt changes in lightning activity,\u201d said Phil Evans, director-general<\/a> of Eumetsat. \u201cBy observing these changes in activity, lightning imager data will give weather forecasters additional confidence in their forecasts of severe storms.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eumetsat said severe storms have caused an estimates \u20ac500bn of damages over the past 40 years in Europe alone.<\/span><\/p>\n

In December 2022, the lightning imager launched aboard Europe\u2019s latest weather satellite, the Meteosat Third Generation. On Monday, we received the first results from the instrument: animations of lightning descending across Earth.<\/span><\/p>\n

The footage was produced by Eumetstat and the European Space Agency (ESA).<\/p>\n

\u201cThe animations show the instrument\u2019s ability to accurately and effectively detect lightning activity over the whole area of the cameras\u2019 field of view, which covers 84% of the Earth disc,\u201d said Simonetta Cheli, director of Earth observation programmes at ESA.<\/span><\/p>\n
