As federal assistance has ended, the fate of renters has\u00a0largely been left in the hands of state and local governments.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The Eviction Lab at Princeton University, the largest nation\u2019s eviction database, reported a 78 percent increase in evictions from 2020 to 2021 in the 10 states and 34 cities it monitors. And the crisis has likely gotten worse since then as remaining eviction moratoriums have ended.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The trends are not impacting American renters equally. Nonwhite tenants and tenants with families are feeling the brunt of America\u2019s housing crisis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that, disproportionately, the families that are facing eviction in this country have children,\u201d Peter Hepburn, associate director at the Eviction Lab, told The Hill.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In May, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-Ore.) announced the Build Housing with Care Act of 2023, which would address housing disparities by promoting affordable housing that is co-located with child care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Oregon, there are over 110,000 renters who make less than $27,000 a year and pay over half their income to rent,\u201d Wyden said in a statement to The Hill. \u201cAnd making rent is even more challenging when the cost of childcare can reach the cost of a mortgage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since being referred to committees in the House and Senate, this bill has not <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eared to make any progress.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cHaving greater access to both affordable housing and childcare would be enormously beneficial to low-income households,\u201d Hepburn said of the bill.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers are also applying pressure over the racial disparities in America\u2019s eviction rates. Last week, Rep. Nikema Williams (D-Ga.) pressed the Housing and Urban Development Department\u2019s inspector <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> on the issue during a House Financial Services subcommittee hearing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs of last month, over 1.8 million people reported that they were at risk of eviction or foreclosure within the next two months,\u201d Williams said at the hearing. \u201cNearly 54 percent are Black or Latino.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-N.J.) also brought this problem to the House\u2019s attention in a resolution about the unique difficulties Black women face in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlack women have the highest rate of eviction in the country,\u201d Watson Coleman said in a statement to The Hill.<\/p>\n<p>The Eviction Lab\u2019s findings supported Williams\u2019s and Watson Coleman\u2019s concerns.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been able to demonstrate that Black renters routinely face much higher eviction rates than their white counterparts,\u201d Hepburn said. \u201cIn many cases, we\u2019re talking twice as high.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The emerging eviction data shows abiding inequalities more than five decades after the Fair Housing Act was passed in 1968, which ostensibly ended practices of racial exclusion in the housing market. Households with children were not labeled as a protected class until Congress amended the act in 1988.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While the data appears to contradict the spirit of the Fair Housing Act, Hepburn said there was a lot of work to be done to prove it was being explicitly violated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The Lab\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/evictionlab.org\/eviction-tracking\/\">Eviction Tracking System\u2019s<\/a> (ETS) breakdown of state and city eviction data showed eviction\u2019s disproportionate effects on renters of color in some states where rates are rising the fastest.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As of June 3, Virginia had the highest amount of filings out of all the states that ETS tracks. The counties with the two highest eviction filing rates since June 2022 had largely Black renter populations.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, ETS showed 68 percent of those who faced eviction in Philadelphia were Black despite making up only 42 percent of the renters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>New York City and Las Vegas, the cities with the highest number of eviction filings, according to ETS\u2019 latest data, had similar disparities. The highest number of eviction filings since spring 2022 for each city were in areas with predominantly non-white renters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Washington, D.C., also has a history of high eviction rates. In 2018,\u00a0ETS reported an eviction filing rate of 17.2 percent for the city, which topped the national average by 9.39 percent. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/the-coming-eviction-crisis-will-hit-black-communities-the-hardest\/#:~:text=About%2018.6%25%20of%20the%20Washington,eviction%20filing%20ratio%20of%204.19.\">A study from The Brookings Institute<\/a> found that of evictions filed in D.C.\u00a0from 2012-16, approximately 78 percent of them took place in Black-majority neighborhoods.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has attempted to tackle the racial disparities in the housing market through <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mayor.dc.gov\/release\/mayor-bowser-launches-black-homeownership-strike-force-combat-racial-wealth-gap\">The Black Homeownership Strike Force<\/a>. Bowser recently allocated $18 million to the committee\u2019s Black Homeownership Fund and other recommendations.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>However, Bowser remains short of her <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mayor.dc.gov\/release\/mayor-bowser-signs-order-drive-bold-goal-36000-housing-units-2025\">2019 goal<\/a> to create 36,000 additional housing units by 2025. On top of that, her latest budget proposed slashing some of the city\u2019s housing programs funding.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While the issue is largely being left to states and cities to deal with, Hepburn said there is plenty of room for federal action.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve talked with folks at a number of the agencies about ways they could engage with this or be involved with this work,\u201d Hepburn said when asked about the federal government\u2019s interest in the lab. \u201cIt remains to be seen what comes next.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> Inc.
