Each side blamed the other for walking away after marathon Independence Day negotiations failed to yield an agreement despite signs of early progress.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n        A major UPS strike is looming \u2014 here\u2019s what that means for your packages<br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cAround 4 a.m., UPS walked away from the bargaining table after presenting an unacceptable offer to the Teamsters that did not address members\u2019 needs. The UPS Teamsters National Negotiating Committee unanimously rejected the package,\u201d the Teamsters said <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/teamster.org\/2023\/07\/after-marathon-sessions-ups-negotiations-collapse\/\">in a statement<\/a> released Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>The Teamsters voted at the end of June to authorize a strike if a deal is not reached before the current contract expires July 31 and insisted last month they would need an agreement no later than July 1. <\/p>\n<p>UPS and the union are still at odds over wages, benefits and compensation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis multibillion-dollar corporation has plenty to give American workers \u2014 they just don\u2019t want to,\u201d Teamsters <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> President Sean M. O\u2019Brien said in the statement.<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n        From the weekend: UPS reaches deal that lowers chances of nationwide Teamsters strike<br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>UPS encouraged the Teamsters on Wednesday to continue with negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Teamsters should return to the table to finalize this deal,\u201d UPS said in a statement provided to The Hill. \u201cWe have nearly a month left to negotiate. We have not walked away, and the union has a responsibility to remain at the table.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cRefusing to negotiate, especially when the finish line is in sight, creates significant unease among employees and customers and threatens to disrupt the U.S. economy,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<p>The Teamsters have already secured some improvements in working conditions, including an agreement to install heat shields and fans in trucks, after <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/ups-delivery-drivers-dangerous-heat-1849373373\">social media posts<\/a> by drivers toiling in extreme heat went viral last year. <\/p>\n<p>UPS also agreed this weekend to scrap a two-tiered wage system, acknowledge Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a full holiday and end forced overtime. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>But the main phase of talks, which pertains to wages and salaries, is proving more difficult.<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n        Teamsters strike with UPS could snarl commerce as labor flexes muscle<br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>As part of the manual labor-intensive shipping industry, UPS has cited its \u201cability to control labor costs\u201d as a significant factor in its business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur ability to control labor costs has in the past been, and is expected to continue to be, subject to numerous factors, including turnover, training costs, regulatory changes, market pressures, inflation, unemployment levels and healthcare and other benefit costs,\u201d the company wrote in its 2022 end-of-year filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>UPS drivers make $18.05 an hour <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indeed.com\/cmp\/UPS\/salaries\/Delivery-Driver\/Arkansas\">in Arkansas<\/a>, $17.63 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indeed.com\/cmp\/UPS\/salaries\/Delivery-Driver\/Oklahoma\">in Oklahoma<\/a>, and $21.02 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indeed.com\/cmp\/UPS\/salaries\/Delivery-Driver\/Connecticut\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.indeed.com\/cmp\/UPS\/salaries\/Delivery-Driver\/Connecticut\">in Connecticut<\/a>, according to Indeed.<\/p>\n<p>UPS made $11.5 billion in net income in 2022 as profits exceeded <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/ups-stock-sinks-as-revenue-surprisingly-falls-while-profit-tops-expectations-01675163499?mod=mw_quote_news&amp;mod=article_inline\">fourth-quarter expectations<\/a>. 2022 operating profits hit more than $13 billion for an operating margin of 13 percent.<\/p>\n<p>In January, the company increased its shareholder dividend by 6.6 percent to $1.62 per share and announced a new <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/news\/3929703-ups-raises-dividend-by-66-to-162-approves-new-5b-buyback-program\">stock buyback program<\/a> worth $5 billion \u2014 money the company could alternatively spend on its labor force.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> Inc.
