{"id":582281,"date":"2023-07-11T12:30:00","date_gmt":"2023-07-11T09:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/biden-gets-major-win-from-turkey-ahead-of-key-nato-summit\/"},"modified":"2023-07-11T12:30:00","modified_gmt":"2023-07-11T09:30:00","slug":"biden-gets-major-win-from-turkey-ahead-of-key-nato-summit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/biden-gets-major-win-from-turkey-ahead-of-key-nato-summit\/","title":{"rendered":"#Biden gets major win from Turkey ahead of key NATO summit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/07\/erdogon_stoltenberg_071023_AP_YvesHerman.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>President Biden\u2019s hopes of projecting NATO\u2019s unity during the Russian war with Ukraine got a major boost from Monday\u2019s breakthrough in securing Turkey\u2019s backing to allow Sweden into the alliance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Turkey had delayed Stockholm\u2019s accession to NATO for more than a year, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eared to move the goalposts earlier Monday by linking Sweden\u2019s NATO accession to Turkey\u2019s decades-long bid to join the European Union.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>But a breakthrough was announced Monday by NATO Secretary-<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> Jens Stoltenberg, who said Erdo\u011fan agreed to forward Sweden\u2019s accession protocol for ratification in the Turkish parliament.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a historic step which makes all NATO allies stronger and safer,\u201d Stoltenberg tweeted.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Among Sweden\u2019s commitment in the deal is to increase economic relations with Turkey, to enhance cooperation on fighting terrorism, and to support Ankara\u2019s bid to join the EU.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While nothing is final, Erdo\u011fan\u2019s decision before an expected bilateral meeting with Biden is a significant diplomatic victory for Biden.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But there are other issues of disunity within NATO that surround the summit \u2014 chiefly Ukraine\u2019s entry into the organization.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Biden, along with Germany \u2014 the two largest contributors to NATO \u2014 have spoken out against committing to a clear path for Ukraine\u2019s accession, raising concerns about admitting a country at war. The two nations have also called for Kyiv to make more progress on democratic reforms and focus on fulfilling its accession to the European Union.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>But in a surprise move, France has sided with eastern European allies calling for the alliance to provide solid commitments for Ukraine to join NATO.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will have to design the path to make concrete Ukraine\u2019s accession to NATO that was opened in 2008 in Bucharest,\u201d French President Emmanuel Macron said alongside Stoltenberg in Paris late last month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Biden will deliver a major address in Vilnius, Lithuania, on Wednesday to wrap up the summit, which comes against the backdrop of his reelection bid. Biden won election in 2020 while promoting himself as a steady hand in foreign policy and has sought to live up to that pledge through his response to Russia\u2019s invasion.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Holding NATO together is Biden\u2019s north star, what he views as the only guarantee to deter Russian President Vladimir Putin from expanding his aggression in Ukraine to other European countries and beyond.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe Putin has had an overwhelming objective, from the time he launched 185,000 troops into Ukraine, and that was to break NATO,\u201d Biden said in an interview with CNN on Sunday. \u201cSo holding NATO together is really critical.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s success on bridging the divide on Ukraine \u2014 between showing support for Kyiv while holding back a guaranteed pathway to full membership \u2014 will be revealed in a joint statement to be released at the end of the summit.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sure the drafters are working, as we speak, to come up with a communique language that says something like, \u2018Well not now, but soon,\u2019\u201d said Jim Townsend, adjunct senior fellow in the Transatlantic Security Program with the Center for a New American Security.\u00a0\u201cWhat we say in the communique will be really important.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even with this divide, NATO\u2019s 31 members are expected to agree to a multiyear package of assistance for Ukraine and upgraded political ties to allow Kyiv to call a meeting of NATO members when necessary.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. presidential election is also hanging over the summit and NATO\u2019s future. Former President Trump, the leading candidate for the GOP presidential nomination, has signaled a starkly different tact from Biden on Ukraine and global alliances more generally.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Trump has promised to end the Russia-Ukraine war within a day of reentering the White House, raising fears that he will push to cede Ukrainian territory to Russia. And when Trump was president, he held back from fully\u00a0endorsing the U.S. commitment to NATO\u2019s Article 5 mutual defense provision, something that scares many European leaders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is concern about that, everyone was hoping that Trump was a one-off. Here he\u2019s coming back like a zombie,\u201d Townsend said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s something that\u2019s spoken in hushed tones in the hallways, usually prefaced by, \u2018What do you think are the odds?\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Biden has also worked to keep up support for Ukraine at home. His message of building global unity in the fight for democracy is likely to be a key part of his 2024 campaign, contrasting with what the administration sees as isolationist positions from Trump and other Republicans.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we\u2019re putting the world together in a way that is going to make things significantly \u2026 more secure for people,\u201d he said in the CNN interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want to finish the job.
