Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) sparked uproar Tuesday after refusing to denounce white nationalists in a CNN interview, forcing Republican senators to respond to the controversial comments and giving Democrats political ammo to go on the attack.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Asked about Tuberville\u2019s comments about white nationalism in the military, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) issued a forceful denunciation of white supremacy at his weekly leadership conference.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWhite supremacy is simply unacceptable in the military and in our whole country,\u201d McConnell told reporters. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McConnell\u2019s top deputy, Senate Republican Whip John Thune (S.D.), said there\u2019s no room for white nationalists in the GOP or the military. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just think there isn\u2019t any place for it. We are a country obviously that has built around a set of principles, that\u2019s welcoming,\u201d he said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Thune didn\u2019t want to comment on Tuberville\u2019s argument on CNN that white nationalists aren\u2019t necessarily racist. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not for me to decide,\u201d he said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), who has Cuban heritage, said \u201cethnic nationalism is un-American and I think it would be problematic in the military.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cMy definition of a white nationalist is someone that believes that America belongs to white people. That\u2019s not American, that\u2019s un-American, and that would be a problem in the military,\u201d he said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tuberville\u2019s Alabama colleague, Sen. Katie Britt (R), also called out Tuberville, telling a reporter for HuffPost: \u201cWhite supremacy and racism have absolutely no place in our country. Period. The end.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tuberville sparked controversy earlier this year when asked whether white nationalists should be able to serve in the military.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWell, they call them that. I call them Americans,\u201d he told an NPR station in Alabama.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The senator then doubled down on those comments when asked about them by CNN host Kaitlan Collins in a Monday interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He clashed with Collins after she said that a white nationalist is \u201csomeone who believes that the white race is superior to other races.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWell, that\u2019s some people\u2019s opinion,\u201d Tuberville responded. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy opinion of a white nationalist, if someone wants to call them a white nationalist, to me, is an American,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s an American. Now, if that white nationalist is a racist, I\u2019m totally against anything that they want to do because I am 110 percent against racism.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He dismissed \u201cwhite nationalist\u201d as a label that liberals like to slap on their political opponents. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>He said it\u2019s \u201cjust a cover word for the Democrats now where they can use it to try to make people mad across the country\u201d and pushed back against calls to purge white nationalists from the military. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tuberville said he\u2019s for \u201cwhoever wants to be in the military to fight for this country.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Those comments drew a harsh rebuke from Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.). \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n        Schumer: Tuberville is \u2018wrong, wrong, wrong\u2019 on white nationalist comments<br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe senator from Alabama is wrong, wrong, wrong,\u201d Schumer declared. \u201cThe definition of white nationalism is not a matter of opinion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the Senator from Alabama to obscure the racist nature of white nationalism is indeed very, very dangerous,\u201d he said. \u201cHe is fanning the flames of bigotry and intolerance.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tuberville did <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear to backtrack from his comments later in the day, asserting that \u201cwhite nationalists are racists.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>But he only changed course after being hounded by members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> throughout the day to explain and justify his comments on CNN. \u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Raising_his_profile\"><\/span><strong>Raising his profile<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1400\" height=\"787\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/07\/tubervilletommy_071123gn04_w.jpg?w=900\" alt=\"Sen. (Greg Nash)<\/p>\n<p>Despite the intense blowback on Capitol Hill, there\u2019s evidence that Tuberville\u2019s high-profile battles with the political establishment in Washington are raising his national political profile and strengthening his support among conservatives at home. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One Republican senator who requested anonymity observed that Tuberville appears to be gaining political strength in Alabama after holding up 260 nonpolitical military promotions for months to protest the Biden administration\u2019s abortion policies at the Department of Defense. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A Morning Consult poll published in May showed that 50 percent of respondents in Alabama approved of Tuberville\u2019s performance while only 32 percent disapproved.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Senate Republicans weren\u2019t happy about having to spend much of the day answering questions regarding Tuberville\u2019s views about whether white nationalists are regular Americans who shouldn\u2019t be pushed out of the military. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Senate Armed Services Committee chairman Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) refused to talk about Tuberville as he stepped onto an elevator after voting on the Senate floor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI answered a lot of questions about that,\u201d he told reporters, flashing a tight-lipped smile. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) raised his hand and waved away a question about Tuberville as he stepped into a Senate GOP leadership office before the weekly GOP conference lunch. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Thune admitted that he wasn\u2019t sure what Tuberville was trying to say by his comments about white nationalism.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) said Tuberville\u2019s comments about white nationalism represent one of many problems that Republicans have to deal with as they face a growing schism between traditional conservatism and the populist America-first conservativism that former President Donald Trump thrust into the spotlight during his time in office. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur party has lots of problems, add that to the list,\u201d he said of the new debate over the meaning of white nationalism. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Romney also defended his colleague, insisting \u201cI don\u2019t think Senator Tuberville is in any way racist.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Leery_on_questions_of_motive\"><\/span><strong>Leery on questions of motive<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1400\" height=\"787\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/grahamlindsey_051623gn01_w.jpg?w=900\" alt=\"Sen. (Greg Nash)<\/p>\n<p>Senators are usually leery about commenting on their colleagues\u2019 motives or character because they need their cooperation to get even the most routine tasks done on the chamber floor in a timely manner. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tuberville has flexed his muscle this year by holding up Biden\u2019s military promotions for months on end, even though many Republicans, including McConnell, have said they don\u2019t agree with his tactics. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) appeared baffled by Tuberville\u2019s comments and questioned whether his colleague knew that many people interpret the term \u201cwhite nationalist\u201d to describe someone who promotes white supremacist or white separatist ideology. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know that\u00a0he\u00a0knows what that means to some people. Or maybe he does and doesn\u2019t care \u2026 He\u2019s clearly sort of doubled down on the whole notion,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are certain things that I get you might be able to make a technical\u00a0case for it. \u2018OK, I call them Americans.\u2019 Well yeah, but so is everybody in prison for life for murder. They\u2019re Americans. That\u2019s technically true. But it still doesn\u2019t mean you honor them,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Cramer advised his colleague to stop talking about the divisive topic. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s unnecessary. I know that much. As far as an issue for him, he doesn\u2019t need it. I don\u2019t know why he insists on using it,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said \u201cwhite nationalism to me is a political movement based upon a person\u2019s race, which I don\u2019t give any support or validity to.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re a member of the white nationalist movement, then I think that movement is based on race and I don\u2019t like it,\u201d he said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Graham said \u201cit\u2019s up to\u201d Tuberville whether to stop defending white nationalists in the military but expressed his own belief that people who espouse views of racial superiority shouldn\u2019t serve in the armed forces. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf a military member is on social media espousing racial superiority, then kick them out,\u201d he said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Julia Shapero contributed.\u00a0<\/em><em><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
