Berlin, Germany<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-main-content\">\n                            Chasmic wealth gaps, soaring crime rates, exorbitant living costs,\u00a0and horrifying homelessness\u2026 no wonder everyone dreams of being \u201cthe next Silicon Valley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The latest bearer of the nickname is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/michael-gove-cambridge-silicon-valley-levelling-up-v27nmnttc\">Cambridge<\/a>, England. Under new government plans,\u00a0 billions of euros will be poured into new houses, business parks, laboratories, and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> hubs in the city. The investment reportedly aims to create \u201cthe Silicon Valley of Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The city joins a growing list of places to earn the tired tagline. It\u2019s a particularly prevalent desire in Europe, where half the continent seems to have earned the ambitious epithet. Here are six leading contenders for the title.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_The_UK\"><\/span>1. The UK<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>British politicians have long aspired to replicate the Bay Area\u2019s magic formula. Dubbed Holmene, the project aims to create a futuristic tech zone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-iyhl1z\">\u201cI think this could become a sort of European Silicon Valley,\u201d Brian Mikkelsen, the head of the Danish chamber of commerce, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/jan\/07\/europes-silicone-valley-denmark-plans-nine-new-islands-copenhagen\">told<\/a> TV2 television.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-iyhl1z\">The first plots of land were expected to go on sale in 2028. The entire project was slated for completion by 2040.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Ireland\"><\/span>3. Ireland<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Ireland\u2019s <span>tax regime and IT talent\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2016\/08\/31\/why-silicon-valley-followed-apple-to-ireland-eventually.html\" data-gtm-vis-recent-on-screen-934287_1021=\"7132\" data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen-934287_1021=\"7132\" data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time-934287_1021=\"100\" data-gtm-vis-has-fired-934287_1021=\"1\">have attracted many<\/a><span> tech giants to make the emerald isle their European home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The country also uniquely combines EU and Eurozone membership with strong\u00a0links to the US and UK \u2014 an enticing package for global corporations. Such allures clearly caught the eye of Brian Halligan, the co-founder of Hubspot.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIreland has the chance to be the Silicon Valley of Europe, for sure,\u201d Halligan <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.siliconrepublic.com\/start-ups\/hubspot-ceo-brian-halligan-interview#:~:text=%E2%80%9CBut%20Ireland%20has%20the%20chance,engineers%2C%20it's%20starting%20to%20happen.\">told<\/a> Silicon Republic in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"firstHeading\" class=\"firstHeading mw-first-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Plateau_de_Saclay_France\"><\/span><span class=\"mw-page-title-main\">4. Plateau de Saclay, France<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The French government has poured cash into an emerging tech hub in Plateau de Saclay, a research and business cluster in the south of Paris.<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>Launched by former president Nicolas Sarkozy, the district mingles tech firms with higher education institutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSaclay is a home to excellence unique in France and could become a French Silicon Valley,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbulletin.net\/archive\/sarkozys-plan-to-expand-paris-boundaries-to-be-set-in-motion-h50401.html\">said<\/a> Christian Blanc, the minister leading the project, back in 2009.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The progress since then has been bumpy. While successful companies and research have emerged, the region has been beset by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.la-croix.com\/Economie\/lente-emergence-Paris-Saclay-Silicon-Valley-francaise-2023-04-06-1201262388\">problems<\/a> with housing and accessibility.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_The_Nordic-Baltic_region\"><\/span>5. In May, Estonian Prime\u00a0Minister Kaja Kallas unveiled plans to merge the countries into a tech superpower.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are too small to go alone, but the Nordic-Baltic region together has a population of 33 million and generates around 2% of global GDP,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baltictimes.com\/estonian_pm__local_silicon_valley_could_be_created_in_cooperation_with_nordic_countries\/\">said<\/a> <span>Kallas.\u00a0\u201c<\/span>By working smartly together, we can develop a private equity and venture capital ecosystem which is both sizeable and agile, and thus attractive to large investors in third markets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPutting assets together could also create more sizeable tickets from large institutional players. In other words, instead of competing, we can build a new Silicon Valley \u2014 let\u2019s call it the New Nordic Tech Valley.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Berlin_Germany\"><\/span><span property=\"schema:name\">6. Berlin, Germany<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Berlin\u2019s steady<span>\u00a0stream of skilled labour, EU membership, and (relatively) low living costs have frequently sparked hopeful comparisons to Silicon Valley.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The city\u2019s IT sector is best known for thriving startups, but tech<\/span> giants have also been drawn to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/cities\/2014\/sep\/11\/poor-but-sexy-not-enough-rise-fall-berlin-mayor-klaus-wowereit\">\u201cpoor but sexy\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 German capital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no other city like Berlin where the spirit of pioneering and innovation is so strong,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2014\/jan\/03\/berlin-poor-sexy-silicon-valley-microsoft-google\">said<\/a> Christian Illek, Microsoft\u2019s then-<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> manager for Germany, in 2014. \u201cIf we succeed in implementing the ideas of startups into successful business models, Berlin will become Europe\u2019s Silicon Valley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As this list shows, various contenders for that title have emerged in the intervening years.
