href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> host Tucker Carlson aggressively pressed former Vice President Mike Pence Friday about how he\u2019d characterize the events of Jan. 6, 2021, when a pro-Trump mob invaded the Capitol, forced the evacuation of lawmakers and interrupted the counting of electoral votes in the 2020 election. <\/p>\n<p>The questioning by Carlson, who described the events of Jan. 6 as \u201cmostly peaceful chaos\u201d while at Fox News, underscored how Pence\u2019s break with former President Trump that day will be a defining feature of his campaign.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Many of Trump\u2019s supporters have never forgiven Pence, who was hanged in effigy that day, for his actions on Jan. 6, and it is a major problem in his quest for the presidency.<\/p>\n<p>Carlson opened his questioning of Pence by asking if the former vice president thought the attack on the Capitol was an \u201cinsurrection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll I know for sure having lived through it at the Capitol is that it was a tragic day,\u201d Pence said at a Family Leader event in Des Moines, Iowa. \u201cI\u2019ve never used the word insurrection, Tucker, over the past two years, but it was a riot that took place at electoral victory, said he witnessed firsthand the dozens of police officers who were assaulted that day and the \u201ctragic loss of life\u201d that occurred.<\/p>\n<p>Carlson asked Pence who specifically he was referring to when he spoke of the loss of life, and Pence mentioned Ashli Babbitt, a protester who was shot in the Capitol by law enforcement and whose death has become a rallying point for Trump and other conservatives.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI just think it was a tragic moment, without question,\u201d Pence said. \u201cBut I have to tell you that seeing people assaulting law enforcement officers, smashing windows, breaking into the Capitol building, it infuriated me. And it\u2019s very likely that the restraint that was shown by law enforcement officers saved lives that day.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n        The Hill Elections 2024 coverage<br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Pence presided over the certification that day. Trump, who spoke to a crowd about the election being stolen from him ahead of the Capitol invasion, had pressed his vice president to overturn the results of the election. <\/p>\n<p>Pence said he had no power under the Constitution to do so, a position that has been widely accepted by policymakers in both parties as well as constitutional scholars. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Pence received tepid <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lause during the appearance with Carlson as he said that \u201cday of tragedy became a triumph of freedom\u201d and that he did his duty under the Constitution.\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\">\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"More_from_The_Hill\"><\/span>More from The Hill<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\">He received an even more muted response from the crowd as he told Carlson that Trump\u2019s words that day were \u201creckless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe whatever his intentions in that moment, it endangered me and my family and everyone that was at the Capitol that day,\u201d Pence said. \u201cI believe history will hold him accountable for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Those who marched on the Capitol that day were heard chanting \u201chang Mike Pence\u201d because of his perceived disloyalty to Trump. <\/p>\n<p>Pence launched his campaign for the 2024 Republican nomination last month by arguing that Trump\u2019s behavior around Jan. 6 should be disqualifying for another White House term. <\/p>\n<p>Trump spent weeks claiming the 2020 election was stolen before Jan. 6 attack, and he has been criticized by members of both parties for riling up the crowd that day. Some of Carlson\u2019s former colleagues at Fox were among those who on Jan. 6 sought to get Trump to calm down the mob that had overwhelmed police and entered the Capitol.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apple.news\/T7zM9N_S2SDKHQ2PypEf8AQ?subscribe=1\">Sign up for the latest from The Hill here<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>Trump criticized Pence on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> Jan. 6 for lacking courage as the then-vice president was being escorted to safety.<\/p>\n<p>Pence has been consistently polling in single digits nationally since entering the race, well behind Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R). But Pence\u2019s campaign believes his message and personal story will resonate particularly with Iowa voters, who align more with Pence\u2019s traditional conservative views and focus on his faith.
