{"id":582847,"date":"2023-07-15T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-07-15T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/carlson-interview-with-tate-highlights-far-rights-effort-to-redefine-traditionalism\/"},"modified":"2023-07-15T13:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-07-15T10:00:00","slug":"carlson-interview-with-tate-highlights-far-rights-effort-to-redefine-traditionalism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/carlson-interview-with-tate-highlights-far-rights-effort-to-redefine-traditionalism\/","title":{"rendered":"#Carlson interview with Tate highlights far-right\u2019s effort to redefine traditionalism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/07\/tateandrew_062123getty_traditionalism.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Tucker Carlson\u2019s interview with controversial <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> influencer Andrew Tate, a self-described misogynist who faces <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/romania-andrew-tate-rape-trafficking-charge-fb22c837027bf44ddf0316d46dfaf2b1\">charges of human trafficking and rape<\/a> in Romania, is highlighting an effort on the far-right to redefine traditional values. <\/p>\n<p>Tate sat with Carlson for a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TuckerCarlson\/status\/1678873144201818115\">two-and-a-half-hour interview<\/a> published Tuesday on Twitter, where the pair opined on a wide range of topics, including society\u2019s purported push to put \u201cthe woman in charge, and the man below with no backbone.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Tate has garnered millions of followers and sizable influence online for championing what he calls \u201ctraditional\u201d masculinity. Those views include that women should <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/3am\/celebrity-news\/big-brother-reject-andrew-tate-11369506\">\u201cbear responsibility\u201d<\/a> \u00a0for being sexually assaulted and that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cobratate.com\/youngkings\">\u201chigh-value\u201d men<\/a> have \u201cunlimited options\u201d of women \u2014\u00a0\u201ca new model every weekend. A string of broken hearts.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pasha Dashtgard, director of research at American University\u2019s Polarization and Extremism Research and Innovation Lab (PERIL), told The Hill that Tate\u2019s \u201calpha male\u201d way of life\u00a0is not conventionally traditional. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not a husband, father, head-of-household and \u2018Leave It to Beaver\u2019 vision of masculinity,\u201d Dashtgard said. \u201cThis is a new thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In deciding to interview Tate, Carlson gave over his platform to the U.S.-born British citizen, likely signaling his interest in winning over Tate\u2019s following on social media. In doing so, Carlson joined other big names in right-wing internet culture, including <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/hatewatch\/2023\/02\/07\/alex-jones-urged-rogan-host-pro-rape-extremist\">podcast host<\/a> Joe Rogan, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/media\/3998688\">conspiracy theorist<\/a> Alex Jones and Donald Trump Jr., in amplifying Tate\u2019s playbook to redefine traditionalism in a modern landscape.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tate\u2019s audience is primarily made up of young men who are \u201ckind of confused\u201d about their place in society, Dashtgard said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0been very convenient for opportunistic political conservatives to\u00a0glom on to that, like, \u2018Oh, we\u00a0can <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eal to this group of young men by just kind of validating Andrew Tate and the people like him.,&#8217;\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Tate rose to fame after being kicked off the British version of the reality TV show \u201cBig Brother\u201d in 2016 for a video seemingly showing him attacking a woman, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-64125045\">according to the BBC<\/a>. The former pro kickboxer said at the time that the footage was \u201ca total lie trying to make me look bad.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Romania, Tate and his brother Tristan are accused of forming a criminal gang to exploit women.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite that, his appeal online hasn\u2019t much waned \u2014 and it isn\u2019t insular. He\u2019s part of what <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.isdglobal.org\/explainers\/the-manosphere-explainer\/#:~:text=The%20'manosphere'%20is%20an%20umbrella,involuntary%20celibates%E2%80%9D%20(incels).\">researchers have dubbed<\/a> the \u201cmanosphere,\u201d an online network of websites and forums promoting toxic masculinity and anti-feminist beliefs. Men\u2019s rights activists, involuntary celibates \u2014 \u201cincel\u201d for short \u2014 and pickup artists help make up that realm, according to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.internetmatters.org\/hub\/news-blogs\/what-is-the-manosphere-and-why-is-it-a-concern\/\">nonprofit internet safety organization Internet Matters<\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cDiscourses around gender and around gender roles \u2014 that\u2019s just baked into the cake of a lot of conservatism,\u201d said Whitney Phillips, a professor of digital platforms and ethics at the University of Oregon. \u201cSo it isn\u2019t surprising at all that you see some foothold for beliefs such as Tate\u2019s, even though they are on the extreme end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey exist within the same kind of spectrum that is \u2026 really emphasizing that men and women are different,\u201d Phillips added.<\/p>\n<p>As conservative men are urged to embrace this new wave of masculinity, some conservative women online are leaning into stricter adherence to traditional gender roles in the household, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>On TikTok, done-up women in flowy dresses and aprons who <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/search?lang=en&amp;q=tradwife&amp;t=1689359326468\">call themselves \u201ctradwives\u201d<\/a> proclaim the pitfalls of feminism, often while cleaning the house or baking bread. Instagram tradwives are <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/explore\/tags\/tradwife\/\">aestheticizing historical family dynamics<\/a>, where women are often depicted maintaining the home. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Conservative media have latched onto the trend. At the pro-Trump youth group Turning Point USA\u2019s annual Young Women\u2019s Leadership Summit, influencers in the online conservative political sphere urged the young women in attendance to go back to their \u201cbiblical roots\u201d and be \u201cfeminine, not feminist,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/2023\/06\/15\/inside-conservative-confab-young-women-where-feminism-is-lie\/\">the Washington Post reported<\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere ain\u2019t nothing wrong with being a tradwife,\u201d right-wing influencer Benny Johnson told the crowd.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Mairead Moloney, a sociology professor at the University of Kentucky who studies online misogyny, said\u00a0those women are buying into a \u201cpatriarchal bargain,\u201d whereby women agree to play by the patriarchy\u2019s rules\u00a0\u2014\u00a0like dressing conservatively or submitting to men\u00a0\u2014\u00a0to protect themselves from a society where women increasingly lack protection.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really is a false premise of maintaining bodily autonomy and safety and sovereignty in a world that is increasingly dangerous towards and hostile towards women,\u201d Moloney said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese women think that they\u2019re taking a shortcut to that, when really, they don\u2019t realize the call is coming from inside the house,\u201d she added.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Those societal issues are a catalyst for the seeming success of new calls for traditionalism, Dashtgard\u00a0said. He gave the example of a young man nervous about dating women, who is allured by Tate\u2019s seemingly untouchable confidence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat often happens is there\u2019s a legitimate grievance or legitimate concern, and that in the absence of a structural way of addressing that problem, people will come in and use that as a way of wedging their hateful, toxic ideology in there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Since the 1950s, such grievances in conservative circles have historically been addressed by the discourse around traditional masculinity, femininity and family, Phillips said. The idea of the nuclear family, for example, was borne out of efforts to repel the perceived corruption of communist ideals during the Cold War, she said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cYou see those same kinds of discourses cropping up, except now \u2014\u00a0instead of what people need to be, or feel, or communicate that they\u2019re trying to be protected from \u2014 it\u2019s not communism, it\u2019s wokeness,\u201d Phillips said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t overstate how important that historical parallel ultimately is, and how that then maps on to exactly the kinds of culture war issues that we\u2019re dealing with in politics now,\u201d she added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
