Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) made over the weekend that were critical of Israel.<\/p>\n<p>The chamber\u00a0voted 412-9-1 to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>rove the resolution, which asserts that Israel \u201cis not a racist or apartheid state,\u201d rejects antisemitism and xenophobia in all forms and states that the U.S. \u201cwill always be a staunch partner and supporter of Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>All nine Democrats who opposed the measure are members of the Progressive Caucus: Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.), Rashida Tlaib (Mich.), Jamaal Bowman (N.Y.), Summer Lee (Pa.), Ilhan Omar (Minn.), Cori Bush (Mo.), Andr\u00e9 Carson (Ind.), Delia Ramirez (Ill.) and Ayanna Pressley (Mass.). Rep. Betty McCollum (D-Minn.) voted \u201cpresent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jayapal supported the resolution.<\/p>\n<p>The vote came days after Jayapal, the chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, said \u201cIsrael is a racist state\u201d during a progressive conference in Chicago on Saturday. The comment came as Palestinian protesters disrupted a panel discussion, which three members of Congress were taking part in.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), a Jewish lawmaker who was also on the panel, said the activist group protesting has focused attention on her for years, and told reporters this week that Jayapal was confronting \u201can attack on me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jayapal walked her comments back one day later, writing in a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jayapal.house.gov\/2023\/07\/16\/jayapal-statement-on-israel-comments\/\">statement<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cI do not believe the idea of Israel as a nation is racist\u201d and apologizing \u201cto those who I have hurt with my words.\u201d She also criticized the conservative government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.<\/p>\n<p>The congresswoman, however, still faced bipartisan criticism for her initial comments, which included a rare joint statement from House Democratic leadership pushing back on the remarks, and a separate statement signed by 43 of her Democratic colleagues in the chamber that said they were \u201cdeeply concerned\u201d about her \u201cunacceptable\u201d comments.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Tuesday\u2019s vote,\u00a0and particularly how it fractured Democrats, highlighted a dynamic that has played out in the party for years: liberals concerned with human rights issues related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict colliding with party leaders wary of interfering with diplomatic relations between the US and Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s human rights record toward Palestinians drove some of the Democratic opposition to the resolution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States is an outlier in terms of its refusal to recognize the severity of the human rights crisis that Palestinians face,\u201d Ocasio-Cortez told reporters ahead of Tuesday\u2019s vote. \u201cAnd, you know, at this point, from Amnesty International to UN Special Commissions, are recognizing that the denial of rights of Palestinians amounts to apartheid.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cOur inability to actually be honest about this conversation prevents us from being an ally to advancing human rights and being a good ally as well,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly before the vote ended, Ocasio-Cortez was spotted hugging Jayapal on the House floor.<\/p>\n<p>Lee, a freshman lawmaker, sounded a similar note, citing \u201cbasic human rights and democratic values\u201d in a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/summerlee.house.gov\/posts\/lee-statement-on-maga-resolution-treating-antisemitism-as-a-political-football\">statement<\/a>\u00a0following the vote.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI condemn antisemitism and xenophobia in all its forms. Whether we\u2019re talking about India, Israel, or Sri Lanka, we are not true allies if we cannot push our partners to uphold basic human rights and democratic values. I cannot vote for unconditional support of any nation-state,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat my colleagues would be more concerned with silencing a woman of color for speaking truth to power than ending human rights abuses abroad is a damning commentary on the state of our Congress,\u201d Pressley echoed on\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AyannaPressley\/status\/1681412891520667648?s=20\">Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other Democrats claimed that Israel is, indeed, an apartheid state, taking issue with the language in the resolution. Tlaib, the only Palestinian American serving in Congress, made that argument on the House floor during debate on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIsrael is an apartheid state,\u201d she said. \u201cThe government is deeply problematic in the way that they are proceeding in the structure of oppression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/omar.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/rep-ilhan-omar-statement-hconres-57\">statement<\/a>\u00a0after the vote, Omar pointed to a number of human rights groups that, she said, \u201chave found that the Israeli government\u2019s policies meet the legal definition of apartheid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the term may be discomforting, I don\u2019t believe it is appropriate for Congress to be explicitly targeting the legal findings of human rights groups in this way,\u201d she added. \u201cWe shouldn\u2019t allow for the silencing of voices supporting Palestinian human rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The congresswoman also argued that the resolution \u201cwas designed by MAGA Republicans to target and shame\u201d Jayapal for comments \u201cshe apologized and clarified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile I strongly agree with explicitly and affirmatively rejecting xenophobia and antisemitism, conflating antisemitism with criticism of the Israeli government is wrong,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Bowman and Ramirez expressed support for Jayapal ahead of the vote.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201c@RepJayapal is a colleague and a friend. She is a principled Chair who supports the Members of the @USProgressives. She\u2019s a champion for human rights and peace in the U.S. and around the world,\u201d Ramirez wrote in a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/repdeliaramirez\/status\/1681323734655746048?s=20\">Twitter thread<\/a>. \u201cShe is also one of a very few Brown, immigrant women in U.S. Congress \u2013 an institution that isn\u2019t designed for Black, Brown &amp; immigrant folks. This place often tries to silence us, especially when we speak out for the rights of other black &amp; brown folks around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese attempts to silence us only show how badly our voice is needed here,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Bowman on\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepBowman\/status\/1681370060860817409?s=20\">Twitter<\/a>\u00a0said he is \u201cproud to call @RepJayapal a friend and our CPC Chair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is unwavering in her principles and in support of her members, including this weekend when she had @janschakowsky\u2019s back. It\u2019s simple. Rep.
