\n Melanie Lynskey is opening up about why she initially turned down auditioning for Buffy the Vampire Slayer<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n During a recent interview with Shut Up Evan: The Newsletter<\/a><\/em>, conducted before the\u00a0SAG-AFTRA strike, the actress explained why she didn\u2019t feel like she was ready to make the jump from film to television at the time.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cIt was kind of a visa issue, but not really,\u201d she said. \u201cI also was not sure about doing television at that time. It was very early in my career. I had a very old-school agent who was like, \u2018TV? That\u2019s for has-beens!\u2019 and I was like, \u2018I don\u2019t think it is anymore.\u2019 Certainly, now things have really changed, but I just wasn\u2019t super into it (TV) at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Before the Sarah Michelle Gellar-led series<\/a> made its debut in 1997, Lynskey made her acting debut in Peter Jackson\u2019s 1994 film Heavenly Creatures<\/em>, alongside Kate Winslet. After, when auditions began for Buffy the Vampire Slayer<\/em>, Lynskey recalled meeting up with show creator Joss Whedon regarding the role of Willow Rosenberg.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cI don\u2019t remember if it was an offer or if it was like, \u2018Would you come read for it?\u2019 or what it was, but we stayed in touch after that,\u201d she said of their initial meeting. \u201cAnd then I guess they were replacing the person from the pilot at a certain point and I had stayed in touch with [Joss], and he said, \u2018Now do you think you would want to do it?\u2019 And I had seen the pilot and I was like, \u2018Oh, this is\u00a0good<\/em>,\u2019 and I kind of took my agent into it. And then, it became this whole thing of, \u2018Well, now you have to audition.\u2019 So I auditioned.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n Although Lynskey ultimately decided to take the leap into TV and audition for Buffy<\/em>, she said it ended up being a \u201cwhole process\u201d and didn\u2019t get the role. But she couldn\u2019t be more excited for the actress who landed the role of Willow in the series that ran for seven seasons. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cAlyson Hannigan got it, who was absolutely wonderful,\u201d she said. \u201cAll was [cast] as it should have been.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Following the Buffy<\/em> audition, Lynskey went on to star in several other movies, including Coyote Ugly<\/em>, Shooters<\/em> and Snakeskin<\/em>. But it wasn\u2019t until 2002 that she made her television debut. Ever since, she has proved to be a force in both mediums, including scoring Emmy nominations for her roles in The Last of Us<\/em> and Yellowjackets<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
