\n The playful rivalry between Greta Gerwig\u2019s Barbie<\/em> and Christopher Nolan\u2019s Oppenheimer<\/em> continues.<\/p>\n

\n Not only has the films\u2019 release dates being on the same day, July 21, started a \u201cBarbieheimer\u201d phenomenon across social media<\/a> but the two movies<\/a>, with completely contrasting theme<\/a>s, have some other similarities.<\/p>\n

\n During a recent interview with the Associated Press<\/a><\/em>, published online Thursday, Gerwig elaborated on why she chose to reference infamous author Marcel Proust in the film.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cIn \u201cRemembrance of Things Past,\u201d in \u201cSwann\u2019s Way,\u201d he is literally thrown back into his childhood through the taste of the madeleine,\u201d she explained. \u201cI thought, well, that\u2019ll be a nice Easter egg for one person.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n The specific scene the director is referencing is when Margot Robbie\u2019s Barbie steps inside her plastic packaging and makes a remark that the familiar smell is a Proustian memory. Will Ferrell\u2019s Mattell CEO character then proceeds to say, \u201cRemember Proust Barbie? That did\u00a0not\u00a0sell well.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n But what Gerwig didn\u2019t know is that this weekend\u2019s competing film also has a connection to Proust. Nolan\u2019s film is based on American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the development of the atomic bomb, and Oppenheimer, the man himself, reportedly had an appreciation for the author<\/a> as well.<\/p>\n

\n When Gerwig learned of the connection, she responded, \u201cSo he would have loved Proust Barbie!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n The highly-anticipated film follows Robbie\u2019s Barbie and Ryan Gosling\u2019s Ken, who seem to be living this colorful and perfect life in Barbie Land. But when Barbie gets the chance to go to the real human world, she goes on a journey to understand herself and discover her true\u00a0purpose.<\/p>\n

\n Earlier in the interview, Gerwig also shared if she likes to read movie reviews once they come out and what her thoughts were after seeing some of the ones for Barbie<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cOf course. I\u2019m not Emily Dickinson. I\u2019m not above anything,\u201d she said, noting that she did wait the following day to read them because she was too nervous to look on Wednesday. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of reviewers that I really respect and have really liked. Film criticism matters to me as a person and also being in conversation with people who think about cinema matters. But it can feel very scary at the moment that you\u2019re at the emotional pitch of releasing a movie to take it in.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Gerwig added that she also likes to look back at the reviews a few weeks later so she \u201ccan take it in more.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n \u201cIt\u2019s too overwhelming at the moment,\u201d the director said. \u201cBut I did check the email and I\u2019m pleased. [Barbie<\/em>] seems to have been received in the spirit that it was meant, which is exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Barbie <\/em>debuts in theaters Friday.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
