Pepper\u2019s Lonely Hearts Club Band<\/em>, a discombobulated movie musical composed entirely of bizarre Beatles covers, the Future Villain Band, portrayed by Aerosmith, sparred with good guy Billy Shears, played by golden-god rock star Peter Frampton. In many ways, the scene was symbolic of the opposite effects that the bonkers box-office bomb would have on both artists\u2019 careers \u2014 with Aerosmith being the battle&#8217;s real-life winner.<\/p>\n<p>Aerosmith emerged from the 1978 cinematic disaster not only unscathed, but with an actual Billboard Hot 100 hit: a hard-charging rendition of the <em>Abbey Road<\/em> classic \u201cCome Together,\u201d which charted for 12 weeks and is still considered one of the best Beatles covers of all time. Peaking at No. 23, it would be Aerosmith\u2019s last top 40 hit for nearly a decade. However, Frampton \u2014 whose <em>Frampton Comes Alive!<\/em> had just set a record at the time as the best-selling album in chart history \u2014 was seriously professionally derailed, and it would take decades for his career to recover from the backlash.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caas-figure\">\n<div class=\"caas-figure-with-pb\" style=\"max-height: 281px\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"caas-img-container caas-img-loader\" style=\"padding-bottom:56%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"Steven Tyler and Peter Frampton battle it out in &amp;#39;Sgt. Pepper<\/em> debacle in interviews for years. \u201cI had just become the biggest-selling recording artist in the world, selling the most records ever in the United States, toppling Carole King\u2019s record. It&#8217;s the build-you-up-to-knock-you-down syndrome, isn&#8217;t it? Whatever sells papers. So, if you&#8217;re up at the top and you make a mistake, they\u2019re going to go after you, which is fair <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>. But the reason I took most of the blame is that my name was on the top of everybody. My name was <em>above<\/em> the Bee Gees. I think a lot of great actors, they always say, make sure you have somebody else\u2019s name with you on that first screen when they say who\u2019s starring in the movie. Because if it\u2019s just you, you\u2019re going to take the full brunt of it. And I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s backtrack a bit. Forty-five years ago, RSO kingpin Robert Stigwood \u2014 the man behind such smash movie musicals as <em>Saturday Night Fever, Grease<\/em>, and <em>Bugsy Malone <\/em>\u2014 somehow convinced not only Frampton and Aerosmith but also <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RuVHvuZ7XkE\" data-ylk=\"slk:\u201970s luminaries;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">\u201970s luminaries<\/a> like the above-mentioned Bee Gees (who played Billy Shears\u2019s satin-jacketed bandmates the Henderson Brothers), Alice Cooper, Steve Martin, Earth, Wind &amp; Fire, George Burns, Tina Turner, Sha Na Na, Carol Channing, and actual Beatles cohort Billy Preston to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear in this seemingly too-big-to-fail project. Other over-the-top <em>Sgt. Pepper<\/em> musical numbers included <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cfYWSJK2d-s\" data-ylk=\"slk:Speak-&amp;-Spell-voiced robots;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Speak-&amp;-Spell-voiced robots<\/a> bleating and bleeping their way through \u201cShe\u2019s Leaving Home,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9YxMYWGhWls\" data-ylk=\"slk:Cooper as cult leader Father Sun;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Cooper as cult leader Father Sun<\/a> doing a creepy spoken-word rendition of \u201cBecause,\u201d a manic <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=F__uGshlbOo\" data-ylk=\"slk:Martin as the silver-hammer-wielding Dr. Maxwell;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Martin as the silver-hammer-wielding Dr. Maxwell<\/a>, and Preston parading through \u201cGet Back\u201d in a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymotion.com\/video\/xewqyr\" data-ylk=\"slk:metallic marching-band uniform and matching gold go-go boots;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">metallic marching-band uniform and matching gold go-go boots<\/a> \u2014 all of which now stand as amusing artifacts of the wackiest decade ever.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that that movie really was a window into the times, and looking back at it, it\u2019s really fascinating,\u201d Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry chucklingly told Yahoo Entertainment in 2018.<\/p>\n<div class=\"caas-iframe-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"caas-iframe youtube\" style=\"padding-bottom:56%;\" data-type=\"youtube\">\n<blockquote data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/pzrdJ6ZV_JY?rel=0\" scrolling=\"no\"><p><noscript><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/pzrdJ6ZV_JY?rel=0\"><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But upon its release, the rock opera, which later ranked at No. 76 on VH1\u2019s \u201c100 Most Shocking Moments in Rock \u2018n\u2019 Roll,\u201d was a commercial failure, barely breaking even and nearly wiping out RSO\u2019s profits from <em>Saturday Night Fever<\/em> and <em>Grease. <\/em>It was even more of a critical disaster. For several of its stars, the movie was an act of mass career suicide, caught on camera. (It should be noted that when the Bee Gees \u2014 who&#8217;d been riding high on <em>Saturday Night Fever&#8217;s<\/em> success before <em>Sgt. Pepper <\/em>came along \u2014 regained control of their catalog, the <em>Sgt. Pepper<\/em> soundtrack was the only album they did not include. Their 2020 documentary, <em>The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart<\/em>, skipped over <em>Sgt. Pepper<\/em> entirely, as if it had never happened.)<\/p>\n<p>Aerosmith \u2014 along with EW&amp;F (whose \u201cGot to Get You Into My Life\u201d from the soundtrack went top 10) and Cooper (whose \u201cBecause\u201d received a stamp of approval from his pal John Lennon) \u2014 were among the few lucky survivors. \u201cWe did it for an adventure, just to do it. They said, \u2018Come on out, all expenses paid!\u2019 \u2014 throwing money around like crazy,\u201d recalled Perry. \u201cI think the critics kind of left us alone on that. We didn\u2019t get slammed, so we got out of it clean. It kind of exposed us to another part of the entertainment industry, and some of the fans \u2014 Peter Frampton fans \u2014 got to see us be Future Villains. So, as far as our career, I think we narrowly escaped it hurting us. Which\u2026 is about the best I can say.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"caas-iframe-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"caas-iframe youtube\" style=\"padding-bottom:56%;\" data-type=\"youtube\">\n<blockquote data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/RuVHvuZ7XkE?rel=0\" scrolling=\"no\"><p><noscript><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/RuVHvuZ7XkE?rel=0\"><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Perry admitted that initially Aerosmith didn\u2019t want to participate, and they only agreed after one major plot change. \u201cWhen we first were presented with this movie, we were totally against it. We just thought that the whole thing was going to be hokey, and we were just not cut from that cloth. We were very skeptical about it, and kind of even contemptuous about it. And they had Peter Frampton killing [Aerosmith frontman] Steven [Tyler] in the first script. We said, \u2018Well, if you want us to do it, you\u2019ve got to change the script. It\u2019s got to be the other way around.\u2019 We didn\u2019t really consider Peter Frampton <em>worthy<\/em> enough to take us down, just because we thought his music was a little light. So, they said, \u2018We\u2019ll change it!&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(Incidentally, Cooper <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/alice-cooper-on-costarring-with-johnny-depp-the-bee-gees-mike-myers-gene-wilder-muppets-and-snakes-205146715.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:told Yahoo Entertainment in 2020;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp yahoo-link\">told Yahoo Entertainment in 2020 <\/a>that when he was in talks for the movie, he was told, \u201cYou get to beat up the Bee Gees. There&#8217;s a fight scene where you actually fight with them.\u201d But in the actual film, the big battle came down to Bee Gees and Frampton vs. Aerosmith. The Future Villain Band, Hendersons, and Billy Shears all survived onscreen, while Billy\u2019s love interest, a girl-next-door type from the town of Heartland named Strawberry Fields, was not so fortunate. However, Strawberry underwent some sort of miraculous reincarnation during the film\u2019s final musical act, thanks to an act of divine intervention by Preston. <em>Ah, the \u201970s<\/em>\u2026)<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caas-figure\">\n<div class=\"caas-figure-with-pb\" style=\"max-height: 699px\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"caas-img-container caas-img-loader\" style=\"padding-bottom:56%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"Aerosmith, the Bee Gees, and Peter Frampton brawl in &amp;#39;Sgt. (Photo: YouTube).<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Like Perry, Frampton had a bad feeling about <em>Sgt. Pepper <\/em>from the start, and later, when he missed the premiere because he was in the hospital recovering from multiple injuries from a car crash, he was secretly relieved. (Frampton\u2019s mother attended the July 21, 1978 premiere in his place, and reported back to him that during the scene when the distraught Billy Shears, mourning Strawberry&#8217;s Future Villain Band-orchestrated death, considered leaping out of a window, the theater audience chanted, \u201c<em>Jump<\/em>, <em>jump<\/em>!\u201d Frampton knew that was not a good sign.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a disaster from the beginning,\u201d Frampton recalled. \u201cOnce I arrived on the set that first day, I guess I could have walked off, but it would have probably cost millions, and I\u2019d have got sued and everything. So, I just went along with it at that point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As it turns out, Frampton \u2014 who was chummy with the Beatles and had played on George Harrison\u2019s landmark <em>All Things Must Pass<\/em> album \u2014 had only agreed to do the movie because was he was under the impression that another actual Beatle would be one of his co-stars. \u201cFor me [the real disaster] was finding out that Paul McCartney was not in the movie \u2014 which was the only reason I was doing the movie,\u201d said Frampton. \u201cI said \u2018absolutely not\u2019 at first, until Stigwood got on the phone with me and talked me into doing it. He said, \u2018Oh, Paul is doing it.\u2019 I said, \u2018Paul <em>McCartney<\/em>?\u2019 He said, \u2018Yes, Paul is in the movie.\u2019 So, I said, \u2018Wow, that kind of sanctions the movie for me.\u2019 So\u2026 there was trickery involved. It might\u2019ve been in Stigwood\u2019s <em>mind<\/em> [that McCartney would participate], but before I started the movie, I was in England playing a tour day, and the night before we were playing Wembley, Paul and Wings were playing. So I went and saw Paul and Linda, and I\u2019m backstage and I said, \u2018I\u2019ll see you on the set,\u2019 that kind of thing. And Paul was like, \u2018What? What\u2019s that?\u2019 That was the clarification that I needed that it was all trickery.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"caas-iframe-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"caas-iframe youtube\" style=\"padding-bottom:56%;\" data-type=\"youtube\">\n<blockquote data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/yQ5GtVq-9QM?rel=0\" scrolling=\"no\"><p><noscript><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/yQ5GtVq-9QM?rel=0\"><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Frampton chuckled a bit when he recalled that the subject of the movie only came up in conversation between him and an actual Beatle once, many years later. \u201cI was on the All-Stars tour with Ringo Starr. I\u2019ve known him for years now; we\u2019ve been friends for a long, long time. So, Ringo was in the room when someone was interviewing me for a paper \u2014 he was just like making himself a cup of tea or something in the background \u2014 and he\u2019s listening in to what I\u2019m saying and then the question comes: \u2018So, how do you feel about the <em>Sgt. Pepper<\/em> movie?\u2019\u201d Lapsing into an exaggerated Liverpudlian accent, Frampton continued: \u201cAnd I didn\u2019t have time to say anything, because Ringo just went, \u2018<em>Ohhhhhhh<\/em>, we don\u2019t talk about <em>that<\/em>\u2026\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cooper recalled that when he was asked to participate, he just assumed that the actual Beatles would be involved. \u201cThey said, \u2018We&#8217;re doing <em>Sgt. Pepper<\/em>.\u2019 And I said, \u2018Oh, with the Beatles? That&#8217;s going to be <em>great<\/em>!\u2019 And they said, \u2018No\u2026 <em>with the Bee Gees<\/em>.\u2019 And I immediately went, \u2018This is going to be a disaster!\u2019 You&#8217;re talking about the Beatles&#8217; [most] sacred record of all time. \u2026 Now, I love the Bee Gees, I get along with those guys, I had a great time with them. But the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> public are not going to stand for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, while Frampton was enticed by false promises of hanging on the set with Sir Paul, Cooper and Perry signed on despite their own misgivings for the once-in-a-lifetime chance to work with legendary Beatles producer Sir George Martin on the soundtrack \u2014 which actually did manage to go platinum and peak at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 album chart.<\/p>\n<div class=\"caas-iframe-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"caas-iframe youtube\" style=\"padding-bottom:56%;\" data-type=\"youtube\">\n<blockquote data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/PgUdkvSGYGU?rel=0\" scrolling=\"no\"><p><noscript><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/PgUdkvSGYGU?rel=0\"><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people thought [the film] was going to be what it was, and saw it for what it was, but it gave us a chance not only to cover one of our favorite Beatles songs, but to work with George Martin. And that, of course, was the real hook for us,\u201d said Perry. \u201cProbably one of the most flattering things about it was when we were in the studio with [record producer] Jack Douglas, and George Martin came down. We were running the song [\u201cCome Together\u201d] down, and we were waiting for [Martin] to tell us, \u2018Well, you should change this, you should do that.\u2019 We were waiting to hear some words of wisdom. And he said, \u2018Just keep playing what you guys are playing, it sounds fine.\u2019 We were a little stunned. I know that\u2019s one of the things we\u2019re proud of \u2014 that we were able to do it. And it carried its weight. To this day, people love it when we play it live.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to work with George Martin,\u201d said Cooper. \u201cAnd here we are, doing the Beatles&#8217; prettiest song. It\u2019s the prettiest thing the Beatles ever did, \u2018Because.\u2019 And somehow at the end of it, George Martin says, \u2018I can&#8217;t believe that you could turn the Beatles&#8217; prettiest song into a <em>threat<\/em>!\u2019 I said, \u2018Well, the character <em>is<\/em> a <em>villain<\/em>. \u2026 He&#8217;s not going to do it <em>nice<\/em>. He&#8217;s going to be this horrific character doing it!\u2019 And [Martin] sent it to John [Lennon], and John loved it. Lennon loved it because he thought it was just the opposite of what it was supposed to be. \u2026 That kind of greasy, horrific voice really popped out, and it really was playing against the prettiness of it, and John said, \u2018Ah, yeah, I would expect that from Alice!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"caas-iframe-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"caas-iframe youtube\" style=\"padding-bottom:56%;\" data-type=\"youtube\">\n<blockquote data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/6haXIP_oVMg?rel=0\" scrolling=\"no\"><p><noscript><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/6haXIP_oVMg?rel=0\"><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Frampton also speaks positively of working with Martin on the music, saying that was \u201cone of the huge saving graces for me,\u201d even if the soundtrack hardly ended up being a highlight of the late Martin\u2019s illustrious discography. \u201cI can\u2019t ask George anymore, obviously, but I don\u2019t think he thought [the film] was a great idea in the end. I don\u2019t think it was the right project for him, because he had all these Beatles songs \u2014 and <em>no<\/em> Beatles! And I felt that the Beatles are not just their songs; they are the way they sound and the way they play and everything. We had the most fantastic musicians on the sessions, all A-plus-plus-plus players, and it was an honor to play with them on the soundtrack, but I just felt that if George had known, I wonder whether he thought it was a good idea. It must have been frustrating for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Probably no one was more frustrated than Frampton himself, however, because <em>Sgt. Pepper<\/em> certainly didn\u2019t serve as the Hollywood launching pad that he\u2019d hoped it would be. \u201cI had just received a potential deal \u2014 I\u2019d met with Orion Pictures\u2019 Mike Medavoy, and I had a three-picture deal after <em>Sgt. Pepper<\/em>,\u201d he recalled. \u201cAnd of course, that disappeared into the wastebasket after <em>Sgt.<\/em><em>Pepper<\/em> came out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frampton admitted that he still \u201chasn\u2019t really softened\u201d when it comes to his memories of <em>Sgt. Pepper<\/em>. But the experience of writing his autobiography; living with a rare degenerative muscular disease, inclusion body myositis (IBM), for several years; and the \u201cphenomenal experience\u201d of working as a technical adviser on the redeeming movie musical <em>Almost Famous<\/em> with old friend Cameron Crowe has helped put his doomed <em>Sgt. Pepper<\/em> era in perspective.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow I know what it\u2019s like to be in the worst rock movie ever made, <em>and<\/em> I know what it&#8217;s like to experience being a very small part of one of rock\u2019s greatest <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a>. So, I feel like <em>Almost Famous<\/em> kind of canceled out <em>Sgt. Pepper<\/em>,\u201d joked Frampton, who was just announced as 2023\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/blabbermouth.net\/news\/peter-frampton-to-receive-the-myositis-associations-heroes-in-the-fight-2023-patient-ambassador-award\" data-ylk=\"slk:Patient Ambassador Award recipient;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Patient Ambassador Award recipient<\/a> for his work in raising awareness and funds for myositis diseases. \u201cI think that the difficulties and battles we all have in life, the ups and downs, it all goes into making you a more experienced and, hopefully, wiser person. Is [<em>Sgt. Pepper<\/em>] a regret? Yes, it is a regret that I did it, and I\u2019m sure Barry Gibb would say the same thing. But, I did it.
