ascribed to mid-\u201890s British guitar bands who drew from the island\u2019s rock history and inspired global followings. The London band, formed in 1988 by childhood friends Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James, and Dave Rowntree, have diligently avoided a transition to legacy act. That\u2019s partially due to their sporadic release schedule heightened only by Albarn&#8217;s ongoing success as a solo artist and with Gorillaz, his animated pop group formed in 1998. <i>The Ballad of Darren<\/i>, Blur\u2019s upcoming ninth studio album, will be the group\u2019s second in 20 years. It&#8217;s worth paying attention to because at the root of Blur&#8217;s music, there\u2019s a shifting identity that lives up to their namesake, muddying expectations and inviting repeat listens. Britannia may no longer be Cool, but Blur endures.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Blur\u2019s return has been as well-received as the last, with sold-out concerts across the world signaling that, the foursome\u2019s persistent personality clashes are behind them and that a new rhythm has been found. But what makes Blur remain exciting, and where can those who are unfamiliar start? And while we can retroactively see 1991\u2019s <i>Leisure<\/i> as a bit of cosplay pulling from era-defining bands like My Bloody Valentine and The Stone Roses, the band\u2019s talents shine through. Take \u201cShe\u2019s So High,\u201d the Slowdive-y album opener that leads with an all-timer Graham Coxon riff spinning silk around Albarn\u2019s lovesick entreaties, and \u201cThere\u2019s No Other Way,\u201d the hit single that singals the beginnings of Britpop in a Madchester-adjacent package. We\u2019ll get back to that later) It\u2019s a defining document of the \u201cCool Britannia\u201d movement, a handful of years beginning in the mid \u201890s when British culture, from clothes to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a> to music, became the cutting edge.  On <i>Parklife<\/i>, it\u2019s distinguished in part by Albarn\u2019s literary eye; his treatment of the foibles of English life and characters spanning all ages is as gently sarcastic and as one would be with a family member, something you\u2019ll hear on the title track and the swinging disco smash \u201cGirls &amp; Boys.\u201d The influence of Ray Davies and The Kinks is strong here, and while not every English rock band that came up in the \u201890s was on board \u2014 Radiohead guitarist Johnny Greenwood deemed \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/radiohead-thom-yorke-angry-britpop-2081991\">a 1960s revival<\/a>\u201d \u2014 <i>Parklife<\/i> is too richly woven to be mere pastiche.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-250389\" class=\"content_block paragraph video triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<h5 class=\"headline\" style=\"margin-bottom: 30px;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Blurs_best_album_of_the_post-Britpop_boom_13\"><\/span>\n        Blur\u2019s best album of the post-Britpop boom: <i>13<\/i><br \/>\n      <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Blur - Battle (Official Audio)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UwW86i79CxA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('250389');\n<\/script><\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\">\n<p>Broadly, though, Greenwood may have had a point: Britpop\u2019s retro-leaning guitar rock could only ever have been a fad, and its collapse was swift and definitive. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2014\/04\/24\/300610531\/damon-albarn-on-everyday-robots-and-the-birth-of-britpop\">In a 2014 interview<\/a>, Albarn attributed the genre\u2019s rise to a reaction against encroaching American-centric culture, though the hermetic nature would eventually become its undoing. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t a particularly expansive bubble,\u201d Albarn said of the scene, \u201cnot a great deal of elasticity.\u201d Blur\u2019s rejection of Britpop began in earnest with 1997\u2019s self-titled album, which embraced more personal lyrics, more contemporary and abrasive sounds, and crucially, a sense of fun: \u201cSong 2,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/OEy5LBHq6OQ?t=55\">written as a joke<\/a> on their label, remains their biggest hit. <\/p>\n<p><i>13<\/i> continues that expansion with William Orbit on board as producer for the band\u2019s first LP without longtime board-manner Stephen Street. Tragedy and restlessness converge in a new sort of forward energy: the end of Albarn\u2019s relationship with Elastica&#8217;s Justine Frischmann and the band\u2019s restless desire to avoid being pigeonholed conspire to push Blur to new heights. Whether the band is focused or fucking around, they\u2019re equally compelling: \u201cTender\u201d is the gospel-pop stompalong that christened Damon Albarn as pop iconoclast. By contrast, tracks like \u201cCaramel\u201d and \u201c1992\u201d are acidic jams drenched in the droning tones of the American indie rock underground.
