The high temperature in Phoenix has reached or exceeded 110 degrees on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/us-heat-wave-temperatures.html\">20 consecutive days<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Pittsburgh, by contrast, Friday\u2019s projected high is 78.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As an exercise in escapism, we found 10 large cities, one of them Pittsburgh, with some of the coolest July weather in America. Our average temperatures come from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and span the years 1991 through 2020, so they reflect the growing reach of global warming.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"San_Francisco\"><\/span><strong>San Francisco<\/strong>\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Mark Twain once said, \u201cThe coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.\u201d (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/fact-check\/and-never-the-twain-shall-tweet\/\">Or did he?<\/a>)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With an average July temperature of 60.3 degrees, San Francisco puts up some of the coolest summers in the Western Hemisphere.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The chill comes from the city\u2019s coastal location along the Pacific Ocean. California\u2019s Central Valley, to the east, works like a vacuum, pulling cool marine air across the city, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kqed.org\/news\/70533\/why-its-chilly-in-san-francisco#:~:text=To%20the%20east%2C%20heat%20in,country%20%2D%2D%20in%20the%20summer.\">by one forecaster\u2019s account<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s high is 62 degrees,\u201d said Dan Luscher, an urbanist and longtime San Franciscan, speaking Wednesday. \u201cIf I didn\u2019t read the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>, I wouldn\u2019t even be aware there was a heat wave.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think San Francisco should start positioning itself as a climate haven or climate sanctuary,\u201d he said, \u201cas these kinds of heat events are only going to get more common.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Seattle\"><\/span><strong>Seattle<\/strong>\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>With an average July temperature of 66.5 degrees, Seattle ranks as one of the nation\u2019s coolest cities in midsummer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Seattle sits on the same chilly swath of the Pacific Coast as San Francisco, but about 800 miles farther north. To the east lie the Cascade Mountains, a range that shields the city from the cold air of the American interior in winter and from the extremes of heat in summer. There\u2019s a reason why television\u2019s Frasier Crane always wore that suit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Seattle gets 90-degree weather on roughly four days a year, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mynorthwest.com\/3891781\/how-hot-dry-will-it-get-a-preview-of-the-seattle-summer-weather\/\">one local news site boasts<\/a>. When a heat dome settled over the city in 2021, producing eight days of 90- and even 100-degree heat, the city plunged into crisis. \u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"San_Jose\"><\/span><strong>San Jose<\/strong>\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While San Jose might sit on fewer vacation itineraries than the cities listed above, the Californian city boasts an enviable average temperature of 69.5 in July. For an explanation, see its northern neighbor San Francisco.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Portland\"><\/span><strong>Portland<\/strong>\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>With an average July temperature of 70.2 degrees, Portland shares many climatic qualities with other Pacific Coast cities. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Portland, too, is seeing more 90-degree days in an era of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kgw.com\/article\/news\/verify\/yes-its-warmer-in-portland-data\/283-680a3034-f938-428a-b8af-1ca6ea8a569b\">advancing climate change<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"San_Diego\"><\/span><strong>San Diego<\/strong>\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>San Diego enjoys an average temperature of 70.7 degrees in July. And unlike, say, Seattle, San Diego also gets lots of sun. The city makes many lists of American destinations with the most sunshine and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/capital-weather-gang\/wp\/2018\/08\/07\/the-united-states-of-nice-days-heres-where-and-when-to-find-the-nations-most-frequent-ideal-weather\/\">objectively nice days<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pittsburgh\"><\/span><strong>Pittsburgh<\/strong>\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We leave the West Coast now and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> to Pittsburgh, of all places, where July temperatures average a cool 73.2 degrees.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Because of its distance from the coast, Pittsburgh suffers the occasional weather extreme. Back in 2014, temperatures <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/pittsburgh\/news\/experts-cold-summer-leads-to-changing-leaves-in-august\/\">fell into the 40s<\/a> in mid-August. Leaves began to turn.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPittsburgh residents have been known to wear swimsuits and winter jackets during the same week,\u201d a local reporter wrote after an earlier summer cold snap, beneath the headline, \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pittnews.com\/article\/29567\/archives\/weather-in-pittsburgh-is-awful-for-several-reasons\/#:~:text=Although%20Pittsburgh%20is%20nearly%20500,to%20rise%20and%20fall%20swiftly.\">Weather in Pittsburgh is awful for several reasons<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>On the bright side, summers in Pittsburgh don\u2019t get too hot.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are close enough to the Atlantic and the Gulf Stream to get some of the moderation associated with being more coastal,\u201d said Neil Donahue, a chemistry professor at Carnegie Mellon University. \u201cWe are not all that far north of the Mason-Dixon line, but we are definitely not South.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Milwaukee\"><\/span><strong>Milwaukee<\/strong>\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>With an average July temperature of 73.3 degrees, Milwaukee stays a tad cooler than Chicago, its southerly neighbor. Both cities reap gloriously cool summer breezes off of Lake Michigan.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Los_Angeles\"><\/span><strong>Los Angeles<\/strong>\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Angelenos love to gripe about the weather, but, in truth, July in Los Angeles is relatively sweet, with an average temperature of 73.3 degrees.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one real advantage we have is the beach,\u201d said John Singh, an entertainment publicity consultant in the Sherman Oaks enclave. \u201cSo, when it gets uncomfortably hot, we can head out to the coast, where it\u2019s almost always cool.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Detroit\"><\/span><strong>Detroit<\/strong>\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Detroit, like Milwaukee, benefits from its Great Lakes address and from sheer northerliness: The city sits a stone\u2019s throw from Canada. Average July temperature: 74.1 degrees.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Boston\"><\/span><strong>Boston<\/strong>\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Among large East Coast cities, Boston seems to do the best job at resisting summer swelter.
