{"id":583937,"date":"2023-07-23T02:25:03","date_gmt":"2023-07-22T23:25:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/four-things-to-know-about-the-texas-am-controversy\/"},"modified":"2023-07-23T02:25:03","modified_gmt":"2023-07-22T23:25:03","slug":"four-things-to-know-about-the-texas-am-controversy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/four-things-to-know-about-the-texas-am-controversy\/","title":{"rendered":"#Four things to know about the Texas A&#038;M controversy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/07\/AP23202594519396.jpeg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The president of Texas A&amp;M University resigned on Thursday amid the fallout from the botched hiring of a Black editor to run the school\u2019s journalism program.<\/p>\n<p>After publicly celebrating the hiring of former New York Times editor Kathleen McElroy with an official signing ceremony in June, the deal fell apart last week, with McElroy saying she felt \u201cdamaged by this entire process\u201d and some faculty claiming race played a factor.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Here are four things to know about the controversy:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Texas A&amp;M hires former New York Times editor to revive journalism program<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Texas A&amp;M announced in mid-June that McElroy, an alumna of the university, had been hired to run its newly revived journalism program.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McElroy\u2019s recruitment was celebrated with much fanfare, with the head of the Department of Communication and Journalism describing her addition as a \u201chuge step forward\u201d for the program, according to a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/today.tamu.edu\/2023\/06\/13\/aggie-with-distinguished-career-selected-to-lead-texas-am-journalism-program\/\">university press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The former Times editor \u2014 who was already a tenured professor at the University of Texas at Austin, where she had served as the head of its journalism school from 2018 to 2022 \u2014 was originally offered the Texas A&amp;M position with the possibility of tenure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>McElroy walks away after backlash, shifting offers<\/strong><\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>McElroy decided to walk away from the position at Texas A&amp;M last week after pushback emerged over her past work promoting diversity and the university watered down its offer several times, the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2023\/07\/11\/texas-a-m-kathleen-mcelroy-journalism\/\">Texas Tribune<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Amid the backlash from conservative circles, McElroy initially agreed to take a different offer for a five-year position without tenure.<\/p>\n<p>However, she told the Tribune that the interim dean of the College of Arts and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a>s, Jos\u00e9 Luis Berm\u00fadez, warned her earlier this month that her hiring had \u201cstirred up a hornet\u2019s nest\u201d and advised her to stay at UT-Austin.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Days later, McElroy received a revised offer for a one-year contract that could be terminated at any time, which she refused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis offer letter on Sunday really makes it clear that they don\u2019t want me there,\u201d she said, according to the Tribune. \u201cBut in no shape, form or fashion would I give up a tenured position at UT for a one-year contract that emphasizes that you can be let go at any point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hart Blanton \u2014 the head of the Department of Communication and Journalism who previously described McElroy\u2019s hiring as a \u201chuge step forward\u201d \u2014 alleged on Friday that race played a role in the shifting offers.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe unusual level of scrutiny being given to the hiring of Dr. McElroy was acknowledged by one administrator to have been based, at least in part, on race,\u201d Blanton said, according to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2023\/07\/21\/banks-tamu-journalism-hire\/\">Tribune<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He also claimed that Texas A&amp;M President M. Katherine Banks had \u201cinjected herself into the process atypically and early on\u201d and that his signature was used on a revised version of McElroy\u2019s offer without his consent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Texas A&amp;M president, interim dean resign amid fallout<\/strong><\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Banks submitted her resignation on Thursday night, taking responsibility for the fallout from McElroy\u2019s failed hiring but denying any knowledge about the changes to her offer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe recent challenges regarding Dr. McElroy have made it clear to me that I must retire im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely,\u201d she wrote in her resignation. \u201cThe negative press is a distraction from the wonderful work being done here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Berm\u00fadez also announced on Monday that he would step down from his role as interim dean at the end of the month.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p><strong>McElroy points to \u2018DEI hysteria\u2019 as Republicans across the country target diversity initiatives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>McElroy said that she was told that her botched hiring was a consequence of \u201cDEI hysteria,\u201d referring to the recent conservative backlash against diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, according to the Tribune.<\/p>\n<p>Texas passed a law earlier this year banning offices and programs that serve to promote diversity, equity and inclusion at public colleges, while Florida similarly barred colleges from spending money on DEI initiatives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Several other state legislatures have also introduced bills to target DEI programs at colleges.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
