But the video shows that the oarfish encountered by the group <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears to be wounded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany amazing animals can be found off Taiwan&#8217;s northeast coast \u2026 but it was my first encounter with a giant oarfish,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/divers-film-extremely-rare-encounter-earthquake-fish-oarfish-1811088\">Cheng-Ru told Newsweek<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lots of Legs: <\/strong>New millipede species with 486 legs discovered near Los Angeles<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 \"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_a_giant_oarfish\"><\/span>What is a giant oarfish?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The giant oarfish is a deep-sea dweller that normally lives at an depth of about 700 feet but has been found <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu\/discover-fish\/species-profiles\/regalecus-glesne\/\">as deep as 3,280 feet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Oarfish can be found around the globe in non-Arctic waters and are characterized by their scaleless body covered in silvery guanine.<\/p>\n<p>It is considered the longest bony fish in the world by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guinnessworldrecords.com\/world-records\/109456-longest-bony-fish\">Guinness World Records<\/a>. In 1963, an oarfish was caught in New Jersey that was an estimated 50 feet long, and in1885, a 600-pound specimen was caught in Maine.<\/p>\n<p>The fish&#8217;s scientific name is Regalecus glesne. It earned its common name from its highly compressed and elongated body, according to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu\/discover-fish\/species-profiles\/regalecus-glesne\/\">Florida Museum of Natural History<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 \"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Are_oarfish_dangerous\"><\/span>Are oarfish dangerous?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Though the sightings of live oarfish are rare, those who see them are in little danger.<\/p>\n<p>Oarfish do not have teeth and<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/article\/131022-giant-oarfish-facts-sea-serpents\"> feed on plankton through gill rakers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While the fish may have been inspiration for the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/seahistory.org\/sea-history-for-kids\/oarfish-harmless-fish-or-deadly-sea-serpent\/\">tales of sea monsters<\/a>, there are no reports of encounters with oarfish resulting in harm.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 \"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Oarfish_in_mythology\"><\/span>Oarfish in mythology<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>According to Japanese folklore, oarfish sightings are an omen of an impending disaster.<\/p>\n<p>The fish is called \u201cryugu no tsukai\u201d \u2013 which translates to \u201cMessenger from the Sea God\u2019s Palace\u201d \u2013 and was believed to be the servant of the sea god Ry\u016bjin.<\/p>\n<p>The legend says that the<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.orcaireland.org\/ryugu-no-tsukai-the-messenger-from-the-sea-dragon-gods-palace#:~:text=In%20Japanese%20mythology%2C%20the%20oarfish%20is%20known%20as,surface%20to%20warn%20people%20about%20a%20coming%20earthquake.\"> fish are sent from the palace<\/a> to the surface to warn people of coming earthquakes.
