The main storyline follows Momoka and the daily activities of the Survival Game Club. Momoka forms the club so she can play out her military fantasies and shoot airsoft guns all the time under the guise of “survival training.”

Momoka recruits other eccentric students like Urara, Miou, and Maya to join her in the club. Together, the club members engage in mock battles, survival games, and target practice competitions. Momoka is always coming up with wild new challenges and missions for the club, like getting through a jungle obstacle course or infiltrating a rival club’s headquarters.

Are the guns real?

The short answer is no, the guns are not real firearms. They are highly detailed airsoft guns and props made to look exactly like real weapons.

In Japan, it is illegal for civilians to own real firearms like pistols, rifles, and machine guns.

Airsoft guns offer a safe and legal way for hobbyists to replicate the experience of shooting real guns.

Each episode focuses on the girls getting embroiled in Momoka’s exaggerated survival games and military-style training and the guns are often central to this plot point.

A lot of the humor comes from the absurd situations and dangers Momoka forces everyone into.

The lighthearted comedy contrasts the ‘life-or-death’ attitude Momoka has towards her war games.

Gun Design and Detailing

Genya with his gun in Demon Slayer Swordsmith Village Arc [Image via Ufotable]

The airsoft guns used in Sabage-bu! are modeled after real weapons like assault rifles, submachine guns, shotguns, sniper rifles, and handguns. For example, Momoka’s favorite gun is an airsoft replica of a British L85A1 assault rifle. Other characters like Urara carry around airsoft Beretta 92 pistol lookalikes.

The guns are made with precision replicas of real gun components like magazines, charging handles, safeties, and even empty shells that eject from ejection ports.

This level of detail fools viewers into thinking the Sabage-bu! girls are running around with actual firearms.

However, if you look closely you can see subtle signs these are replicas: the guns don’t recoil much when fired and don’t seem to be loaded with real bullets.

The creators seem to have intentionally straddled the line between fantasy and reality for comedic effect.

The girls engage in exciting gun battles using their airsoft weapons but don’t seem to actually get hurt or cause any actual damage.

Conclusion

While Sabage-bu!’s guns certainly look real, they are just highly realistic prop guns and airsoft replicas. This allows the show to present exciting gun action while avoiding some of the controversy that comes with portraying minors using actual firearms. The playful war games and survival challenges faced by the characters are imaginary fun rather than dangerous criminal behavior.

For more content, stay with us here at Spiel Times.
