But the switch has been caught up in more hurdles for Musk and the changing platform.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Musk and his social media company are already facing\u00a0potential legal challenges and user criticism over the new branding.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The company formerly known as Twitter is not the first tech giant to move on from an iconic name. Google rebranded its parent company name to Alphabet in 2015, making Google one of its subsidiaries under the umbrella name. In a similar move in 2021, Facebook rebranded its parent company to name Meta.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Musk also renamed Twitter\u2019s parent company to X Corp. earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>But Musk\u2019s latest change is different \u2014 while Meta and Alphabet only renamed their parent companies, Musk is changing Twitter\u2019s iconic name and branding at the product level.<\/p>\n<p>Musk has directed users to call posts on the platform \u201cx\u2019s\u201d instead of tweets, raising another set of threats to the value behind the brand image.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a risky move getting rid of the iconic Twitter birdie logo,\u201d said Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives, adding that advertisers make take a \u201cwait-and-see <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Ives predicted a $2 billion to $5 billion loss in value from the change; analysts who spoke to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-07-24\/twitter-turning-into-x-is-set-to-kill-billions-in-brand-value\">Bloomberg News<\/a> predicted the change would wipe out anywhere from $4 billion to $20 billion. The company is already facing struggles with advertisers after Musk\u2019s takeover and subsequent changes to content moderation and verification systems.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the rebrand is part of Musk\u2019s long term plan to turn the company into his \u201ceverything app.\u201d That gamble, Ives said, may pay off in the end.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"X_rebrand_mocked_online\"><\/span><strong>X rebrand mocked online<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The initial changes to the platform are all seemingly surface-level rebranding, but were marred with inconsistencies.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>At the top of the page on the web browser version of the platform, users see the X brand logo. But as of Tuesday afternoon, the platform\u2019s staple birdhouse icon \u2014 which takes users to their \u201chome\u201d feed \u2014 remained below the new X logo.<\/p>\n<p>The platform\u2019s mobile app is also still called Twitter and features the iconic blue bird logo<\/p>\n<p>The shift spurred criticism and mockery online, including on Musk\u2019s rebranded platform.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>In <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/s1eezisdead\/status\/1683461973588197376\">one post<\/a>, a user compared the Twitter logo to the \u201cBarbie\u201d movie and the X logo to \u201cOppenheimer,\u201d while others <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/Pledditor\/status\/1683216501778661378\">likened the logo<\/a> to one that would appear on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/donmcvey\/status\/1683427166338396162\">adult content<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s brand change faced real world roadblock, too.<\/p>\n<p>San Francisco police interrupted the changing of the Twitter sign outside the company\u2019s headquarters Monday, leaving it with just a remaining \u201cER\u201d on the side of the building, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/7\/24\/23140317\/twitter-sign-sf-hq-removal-demolition-police\">The Verge reported<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_owns_the_%E2%80%98X_trademark\"><\/span>Who owns the \u2018X\u2019 trademark?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Musk\u2019s plans to rebrand the company as X may also be fraught with legal hurdles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other companies, including tech giants Meta and Microsoft, already have intellectual property rights to the letter Musk is rebranding Twitter under, Reuters reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trademark attorney Josh Gerben <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/problem-with-x-meta-microsoft-hundreds-more-own-trademarks-new-twitter-name-2023-07-25\/\">told Reuters<\/a> he counted nearly 900 active U.S. trademark registrations that already cover X across a wide range of industries. That leaves Twitter subject to lawsuits from others who claim ownership.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Gerben told Reuters that Meta and Microsoft likely wouldn\u2019t sue Musk\u2019s company unless they felt threatened that it encroached on brand equity they built in the letter X.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Robert Brauneis, a professor and co-director of the Intellectual Property Law Program at George Washington University Law School, said it\u2019s \u201cquite possible\u201d an existing company will threaten to sue. <\/p>\n<p>However, Brauneis said he hasn\u2019t seen anything likely to lead a court to stop the rollout of X \u201cdead in its tracks.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Rather, the company may have to face litigation as it continues the transition. And based on its size, Brauneis said he suspects Musk\u2019s company could \u201cafford to pay whatever it would take to make the other ones go away.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_next_for_X\"><\/span>What is next for X?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While X has only made superficial changes to its platform so far, company CEO Linda Yaccarino said the new app will expand into a wide range of services. <\/p>\n<p>X will be \u201ccentered in audio, video, messaging, payments\/banking,\u201d Yaccarino <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lindayacc\/status\/1683213798386147329\">posted<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s absolutely no limit to this transformation. X will be the platform that can deliver, well\u2026.everything,\u201d she added, though she did not lay out a timeline nor specifics.<\/p>\n<p>Ives said the \u201clonger term vision\u201d for X \u201cmakes sense,\u201d but the execution \u201cis going to be highly scrutinized.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s trying to build a super app. He needed to do something aggressive, and he accomplished it,\u201d Ives said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
