Republicans, including\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SpeakerMcCarthy\/status\/1686132675059294208?s=20\">Speaker Kevin McCarthy<\/a>\u00a0(Calif.) and House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep.\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/release\/comer-statement-on-devon-archers-testimony%ef%bf%bc\/\">James Comer<\/a>\u00a0(Ky.), say the testimony shows that President Biden \u201clied\u201d when he made campaign trail statements that he had never talked to his son about his foreign business dealings.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>But Democrats say Archer\u2019s testimony to the House Oversight Committee on Monday actually shows the president was not involved in Hunter Biden\u2019s foreign business affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.), who attended the hours-long transcribed interview, said Archer testified that because Hunter Biden was under pressure from Ukrainian energy company Burisma, \u201che had to give the illusion \u2014 and he used that term, the illusion \u2014 of access to his father, and he tried to get credit for things that he \u2014\u00a0that Mr. Archer testified Hunter had nothing to do with, such as when Vice President Biden went to Ukraine on his own.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lawmakers_clash_over_whether_testimony_implicates_president\"><\/span><strong>Lawmakers clash over whether testimony implicates president<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Archer was on the board of Burisma with Hunter Biden. Republicans have said then-Vice President Biden\u2019s call to remove Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin, whose office was investigating Burisma, was directly related to his son\u2019s involvement with, and sizable payments from, the company.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the investigation in Burisma had been opened before Shokin took the position, and Shokin was widely criticized for failure to prosecute corruption, with his ouster supported by numerous U.S. officials.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), the ranking member on the House Oversight Committee, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/oversightdemocrats.house.gov\/news\/press-releases\/ranking-member-raskin-s-statement-on-transcribed-interview-with-devon-archer\">said in a\u00a0statement<\/a>\u00a0that Archer testified that \u201cPresident Biden was not involved in his son\u2019s business affairs, and that President Biden was never asked to, nor did he, take any official actions in relation to those business matters.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said last week that the president \u201cwas never in business with his son.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>On the other end of the partisan spectrum, Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), who also attended the transcribed interview, said he thought Archer\u2019s testimony \u201cimplicate[s] the president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reading from his notes of the transcribed interview, Biggs said Archer testified that \u201cBurisma would have gone out of business sooner if the Biden brand had not been invoked. People would be intimidated to legally mess with Burisma because of the Biden family brand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Biggs, Archer said the Biden \u201cbrand\u201d referred to President Biden. But Goldman later said that Archer clarified the \u201cbrand\u201d was based on a \u201cD.C. brand based on his own experience in lobbying\u201d and \u201cin conjunction with the fact that his last name was Biden.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Burisma_bribery_allegations\"><\/span><strong>Burisma bribery allegations<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Both Biggs and Goldman said that Archer had no knowledge of an alleged $5 million payment to Biden from Burisma, an allegation relayed by a confidential FBI source\u00a0in a form released by Republicans earlier in June.<\/p>\n<p>Goldman argued that Archer\u2019s testimony undercut the premise of the Biden-Burisma bribery allegations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven though it was perceived by Burisma that they had the Prosecutor <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> Shokin \u2018under control,\u2019 quote unquote, that Joe Biden advocated for his firing \u2014 which of course, was not coveted or desired by Burisma, and would potentially be bad for Burisma,\u201d Goldman said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Raskin said that Republicans <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eared to be \u201cchasing\u201d the bribery allegations, and pointed to a recent letter to Comer from Lev Parnas, who was involved in an effort to dig up dirt about the Bidens in Ukraine ahead of the 2020 election, urging Comer to abandon efforts to chase the \u201cconspiracy theories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Comer, on the other hand, took issue with Hunter Biden\u2019s work with Burisma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Burisma\u2019s owner was facing pressure from the Ukrainian prosecutor investigating the company for corruption, Archer testified that Burisma executives asked Hunter to \u2018call D.C.\u2019 after a Burisma board meeting in Dubai,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/release\/comer-statement-on-devon-archers-testimony%ef%bf%bc\/\">he said in a\u00a0statement<\/a>, which a press release said raised concerns that Hunter Biden was in violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Phone_calls_with_the_president\"><\/span><strong>Phone calls with the president<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Archer\u2019s testimony did appear to partially back up Comer\u2019s\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/07\/23\/hunter-biden-put-then-vp-dad-joe-on-the-phone-with-business-associates-at-least-2-dozen-times-ex-partner-devon-archer-to-testify\/\">statement\u00a0to the New York Post<\/a> last week that he expected Archer to discuss the times he witnessed Hunter Biden\u2019s putting then-Vice President Biden on speakerphone with foreign business partners.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats downplayed that concern.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe witness indicated that Hunter spoke to his father every day, and approximately 20 times over the course of a 10-year relationship. Hunter may have put his father on the phone with any number of different people, and they never once spoke about any business dealings,\u201d Goldman said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cAs he described it, it was all casual conversation, niceties, the weather, \u2018What\u2019s going on?\u2019\u201d Goldman said, adding that \u201cthere wasn\u2019t a single conversation about any of the business dealings that Hunter had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrats also stressed that there were especially frequent conversations between Hunter Biden and his father after his brother, Beau Biden, died from brain cancer in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Biggs pushed back on Goldman\u2019s characterization.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cHe probably forgot to tell you that Devon Archer himself said that was an implication of who the \u2018big guy\u2019 is,\u201d Biggs said, referring to communications drawn from a laptop hard drive that purportedly belonged to Hunter Biden.<\/p>\n<p>The House Oversight GOP also said in a tweet that President Biden attended a 2014 dinner with Hunter Biden and some of his foreign business associates at Cafe Milano in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"White_House_slams_GOP_after_%E2%80%98much-hyped_witness_testimony\"><\/span><strong><strong>White House slams GOP after \u2018much-hyped witness\u2019 testimony<\/strong><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Ian Sams, White House spokesperson for oversight and investigations, also argued that the Archer interview poked holes in the GOP attempts to directly link President Biden to his family\u2019s foreign business dealings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt appears that the House Republicans\u2019 own much-hyped witness today testified that he never heard of President Biden discussing business with his son or his son\u2019s associates, or doing anything wrong,\u201d Sams said. \u201cHouse Republicans keep promising bombshell evidence to support their ridiculous attacks against the President, but time after time, they keep failing to produce any. In fact, even their own witnesses appear to be debunking their allegations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raskin said that the Biden family investigation is a \u201cdesperate effort to distract everyone from former President Donald Trump\u2019s mounting criminal indictments and deepening legal morass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), who was also in the interview, told reporters that Archer had revealed new information, but declined to elaborate further.<\/p>\n<p>Abbe Lowell, counsel for Hunter Biden, said in a statement that House Republicans\u00a0\u201ckeep swinging and keep striking out in their obsessive pursuit of the President through his son, Hunter.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Archer confirmed one more time that Hunter Biden did not involve his father in, nor did his father assist him in, his business.\u00a0It\u2019s well known that Hunter and his father speak daily, and what Mr. Archer confirmed today was that when those calls occurred during Hunter\u2019s business meetings, if there was any interaction between his father and his business associates, it was simply to exchange small talk,\u201d Lowell said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike the relatives of Donald Trump, Senators Ron Johnson and Ted Cruz, Rep. Lauren Boebert, and many others, family members of elected representatives meet people and may get opportunities because of those connections,\u201d he continued. \u201cCongress would be busy investigating many of their own if that\u2019s their idea of an offense.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Archer did not answer shouted questions when entering or leaving the transcribed interview, and\u00a0his attorney declined to take a side in the debate over his testimony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are aware that all sides are claiming victory following Mr. Archer\u2019s voluntary interview today. But all Devon Archer did was exactly what we said he would: show up and answer the questions put to him honestly and completely. Mr. Archer shared the truth with the Committee, and we will leave to them and others to decide what to do with it,\u201d said Matthew L.
