{"id":585155,"date":"2023-07-31T23:45:38","date_gmt":"2023-07-31T20:45:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/texas-ag-ken-paxton-seeks-to-halt-his-impeachment\/"},"modified":"2023-07-31T23:45:38","modified_gmt":"2023-07-31T20:45:38","slug":"texas-ag-ken-paxton-seeks-to-halt-his-impeachment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/texas-ag-ken-paxton-seeks-to-halt-his-impeachment\/","title":{"rendered":"#Texas AG Ken Paxton seeks to halt his impeachment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/AP23146780334832-e1685239122949.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Attorneys for Texas Attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> Ken Paxton (R) are seeking for all but one of the 20 articles of impeachment against him to be dismissed to \u201cpreserve\u201d the \u201cpeople\u2019s will,\u201d they say.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a Monday filing, Paxton\u2019s lawyers asked if 19 of the articles could be dismissed, arguing they took place before Paxton\u2019s most recent term, which began in January, and thus go against Texas\u2019s \u201cprior-term doctrine,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/statutes.capitol.texas.gov\/Docs\/GV\/htm\/GV.665.htm#:~:text=SENATE%20MEETS%20AS%20COURT%20OF,268%2C%20Sec.\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/statutes.capitol.texas.gov\/Docs\/GV\/htm\/GV.665.htm#:~:text=SENATE%20MEETS%20AS%20COURT%20OF,268%2C%20Sec.\">a rule\u00a0that states<\/a> officials cannot be removed from office for an act they committed before they were elected.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Paxton\u2019s attorneys also filed a motion to exclude evidence of any alleged conduct that occurred prior to the start of his term in January. <\/p>\n<p>They said Texas voters should instead decide whether to remove Paxton at the polls, noting voters were \u201csubject to tens of millions of dollars in broadcast advertisements, dozens of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>paper articles, and countless speeches or <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earances accusing Attorney General Paxton of the alleged misconduct,\u201d but still reelected him last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Paxton\u2019s impeachment trial before the Texas Senate is scheduled to begin in September. He is set to be tried on 20 counts of misconduct, including allegations of bribery, abuse of power and retaliation against whistleblowers. The charges are centered on Paxton\u2019s dealings with friend and political donor Nate Paul, an Austin real estate investor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The lawyers did not request Article 8 of the impeachment be removed, which accuses Paxton of misusing his official powers by \u201cconcealing his wrongful acts in connection with the whistleblower complaints.\u201d\u00a0Paxton agreed to a $3.3 million settlement\u00a0with four of his former senior deputies, who said they were fired after reporting Paxton\u2019s alleged abuse of power to federal authorities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The FBI has investigated Paxton for years after multiple senior aides accused the embattled attorney general of using his office to help Paul, who was being investigated for fraud. Paxton allegedly interfered in litigation for Paul\u2019s benefit, gave him access to nonpublic information while Paul allegedly helped pay for a renovation at Paxton\u2019s home and gave a job to a woman with whom Paxton was having an affair, according to\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/capitol.texas.gov\/tlodocs\/88R\/billtext\/pdf\/HR02377I.pdf\">the impeachment documents<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Paul was arrested by the FBI in early June, shortly after the Texas House of Representatives\u00a0voted 121-23 to impeach\u00a0the attorney general.
