“#Barclay Tagg under fire for Kentucky Derby protest comments: \u2018Allowed to shoot you\u2019<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n The trainer for Kentucky Derby favorite Tiz the Law said he was \u201cvery concerned\u201d about the police brutality and social<\/a> justice protests that are expected to surround the horse racing spectacle Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know what these guys are gonna do, these rioters,\u201d Barclay Tagg told reporters Tuesday. \u201cWho knows? All I know is you\u2019re not allowed to shoot them and they\u2019re allowed to shoot you, that\u2019s what it looks like to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tagg\u2019s comments drew criticism from Tamika Mallory, the co-founder of Until Freedom, an organization that says it is aimed at addressing systemic and racial injustice, and will be among those protesting outside Churchill Downs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is what we\u2019re dealing with,\u201d said Mallory.<\/p>\n

Kentucky has been the site of nearly 100 straight days of protests since the killing of George Floyd in May, which in turn led to local outrage and demands that police be charged in the March death of Breonna Taylor.<\/p>\n

Taylor, a 26-year-old black woman, was fatally shot by police in Louisville during a no-knock warrant and along with Floyd has become a face of the country\u2019s reckoning on racism and social injustice.<\/p>\n

WDRB, a local Fox affiliate, reported Tuesday that \u201cmost demonstrations in Louisville have ended without arrests or injuries.\u201d<\/p>\n

Demonstrations in other parts of the country, however, have led to fatal shootings, which seemed to rattle Tagg.<\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t be anything else but very, very concerned,\u201d the 82-year-old Tagg said. \u201cI don\u2019t want my people hurt, I don\u2019t want myself hurt, I don\u2019t want the horse hurt. The world\u2019s crazy right now, and hopefully we can pull it off without something disastrous happ<\/a>ening.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Kentucky Derby initially was scheduled for May 2, but was postponed due to coronavirus concerns.<\/p>\n

It will be held without fans.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that Kentucky thinks they can run business as usual is disrespectful,\u201d Until Freedom tweeted over the weekend. \u201c#NoJusticeNoDerby.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
