\n Steven Soderbergh says that among all the issues facing Hollywood during dual actors and writers strikes, the one that \u201ckeeps me up at night\u201d is data transparency \u2014\u00a0or the lack of it \u2014\u00a0from streaming platforms.<\/p>\n

\n In an interview with Defector<\/em><\/a>, Soderbergh \u2014 promoting his self-funded web series<\/a> Command Z<\/em> \u2014\u00a0said that while using artificial intelligence in the creative process is a serious issue, he\u2019s more concerned that media<\/a> companies are hiding something, whether good or bad, with their lack of transparency.<\/p>\n

\n The filmmaker noted that with the projects he\u2019s made for Warner Bros. Discovery\u2019s streamer Max (including the recently released Full Circle<\/em>), he was given \u201cadjectives\u201d instead of data, with the company telling him things like \u201cWe feel good about these numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n \u201cThere are two potential reasons that we\u2019re not getting all of the information,\u201d he told Defector<\/em>. \u201cOne is that they\u2019re all making a lot more money than anybody knows and that they\u2019re willing to tell us. The other is they\u2019re making a lot less money than anybody knows. And they don\u2019t want Wall Street to look under the hood of this thing in any significant way because there\u2019ll be a reckoning that will be quite unpleasant. It\u2019s one of those two.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Even if it\u2019s the latter, Soderbergh said he\u2019d still prefer to work in an environment \u201cwhere I know what\u2019s going on.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n \u201cIf we tear this thing down to the studs, and find out that the math is funky, it\u2019s going to be quite a transformation,\u201d he continued. \u201cAnd so my feeling \u2014 and I\u2019m operating from a place of real privilege \u2014 is the sooner we find out the better, because one way or another, it\u2019s gotta get rebuilt, you might as well start now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n AI, however, is less of a concern for Soderbergh, who admits to having used it to create some conceptual images for an upcoming project. But he doubts that AI can really replicate the work of humans in writing and directing. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cIt is my impression of the executives that I\u2019m working with, or was working with, that they don\u2019t need any more work. That they are overwhelmed,\u201d Soderbergh said. \u201cAnd the idea of riding herd over a department that\u2019s going to generate new material, based on their ideas through AI, that will then have to be curated and made better by humans? I wouldn\u2019t do it. I just don\u2019t think we can be replaced like that. I just don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Soderbergh is a member of the Directors Guild of America, which ratified a new contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers in June. He is not part of the Writers Guild of America, having become a \u201cfinancial core\u201d non-member in 1995 \u2014 meaning he can still benefit from the guild\u2019s protections for writers but can\u2019t vote in WGA elections or run for leadership posts, among other restrictions.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
