{"id":585947,"date":"2023-08-06T18:59:38","date_gmt":"2023-08-06T15:59:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/democrats-worry-young-people-souring-on-party\/"},"modified":"2023-08-06T18:59:38","modified_gmt":"2023-08-06T15:59:38","slug":"democrats-worry-young-people-souring-on-party","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/democrats-worry-young-people-souring-on-party\/","title":{"rendered":"#Democrats worry young people souring on party"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/emory_campus_101422getty_young-voters.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Democrats are calling for their 2024 candidates to reengage with young voters amid signs that the critical voting bloc may be distancing from the party.<\/p>\n<p>Recent polling has found the number of young people who identify as Democrats is on a slight decline, while President Biden has seen wavering support from the demographic that played a pivotal role in his victory over former President Trump in 2020.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Adding to the concerns <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dellavolpe.substack.com\/p\/ring-the-alarm\">is a recent\u00a0analysis<\/a>\u00a0from John Della Volpe, the polling director at the Harvard Kennedy Institute of Politics, who pointed to possible struggles the party faces with voters between 18 and 29.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNearly every sign that made me confident in historic levels of youth participation in 2018, 2020, and 2022 \u2014 is now flashing red,\u201d Della Volpe wrote in his analysis of 2024, adding \u201cthe ground is more fertile for voting when youth believe voting makes a tangible difference.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cheyenne Hunt, a 25-year-old Democrat and Tik Tok influencer who\u2019s running to be the first female Gen Z member of Congress, cautioned that Democrats shouldn\u2019t take her peers for granted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s less of a sense of loyalty to a particular party, I think, and more of a sense of really taking a look at the system and feeling left behind and forgotten \u2014 and young people engage with passionate candidates who are going to jump in there and do the dirty work to advocate for our best interests,\u201d Hunt told The Hill.<\/p>\n<p>Gen Z especially has felt let down by the political system, leading both to more political mobilization and to less affiliation with established parties, Hunt said, and the demographic needs to be met \u201cwhere they are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are one of the most politically mobilized generations in American history, judging by the turnout numbers after the last midterms, and we are in a place now where you have to constantly engage us. And I understand why, you know? You look at the system and the status quo, and a lot of younger folks feel really betrayed,\u201d Hunt said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The candidate for California\u2019s 45th district said that, with her 2024 campaign\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach to young voters, \u201cwe\u2019re not playing the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> like this is business as usual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, 39 percent of respondents in the Harvard Youth Poll reported identifying as Democrat \u2014 and the figure fell slightly to 35 percent this spring. The share of youth voters identifying as independents or \u201cunaffiliated with a major party,\u201d on the other hand, climbed from 36 percent in 2019 to 40 percent this year.\u00a0The share of youth voters identifying as Republican saw a statistically insignificant shift from 23 percent to 24 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Della Volpe argued that although young voters appear to be getting more progressive in their values, fewer are identifying as Democrat or liberal, are paying close attention to political <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> and are likely to believe in politics as a means for system change.\u00a0The share of younger voters who say they\u2019ll \u201cdefinitely\u201d vote in the 2024 race is now at 51 percent in the Harvard poll, down from 55 percent who said the same at this point in the 2020 race.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Volpe wrote \u201cdaylight\u2019s burning\u201d for the Democrats, who need young voters \u201cto win today and maintain and grow an electoral edge in the years ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Signs that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/circle.tufts.edu\/latest-research\/young-peoples-ambivalent-relationship-political-parties\">younger voters are\u00a0skeptical<\/a>\u00a0of the party establishment have been\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2021\/12\/07\/younger-u-s-adults-less-likely-to-see-big-differences-between-the-parties-or-to-feel-well-represented-by-them\/\">cropping up for years<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>An overall rise in Americans identifying as independent has been noted since 2009, according to\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/467897\/party-preferences-evenly-split-2022-shift-gop.aspx\">Gallup polling<\/a>. The <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/397241\/millennials-gen-clinging-independent-party.aspx\">uptick has been\u00a0attributed<\/a>\u00a0largely to Generation X and millennials holding onto independent identification as they age, whereas greater shares of previous generations tended to attach themselves to a party as they age.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Abby Kiesa, deputy director of the Center for Information &amp; Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) at Tufts, stressed \u201cthere is not always a direct connection between young people\u2019s party ID and who they vote for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though young voters have been noted as less likely than older generations to affiliate with a party, Kiesa said, the last three election cycles \u201chave seen some pretty solid 18-to-29-year-old support for Democratic candidates,\u201d despite the trend away from party IDs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Younger Americans boosted Biden to victory in 2020, with 61 percent of voters under age 30 supporting him, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/biden-2024-campaign-oldest-president-young-voters-152d11d3090518a2e5eee63b9a596673\">AP VoteCast.<\/a> But it\u2019s not clear by how much the voting bloc will turn out for Democrats this election cycle.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The latest\u00a0Harvard Youth Poll\u00a0found Biden earned an approval rating of 38 percent among American registered voters between ages 18 and 29, a 3-point drop since last fall and a 5-point drop since last spring.<\/p>\n<p>Younger voters \u201creally don\u2019t have a strong identity in terms of party politics,\u201d said Ashley Aylward, a research manager at the public opinion firm HIT Strategies. \u201cAnd when they vote, they\u2019re voting really based off of issue and candidate rather than party affiliation.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She argued Biden has made noticeable strides on issues that young people care about \u2014 but that many young people simply aren\u2019t aware of what Biden\u2019s done.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWe had a recent poll that we did with young voters, and we found particularly it was the Gen Z voters that don\u2019t attribute his principles \u2026\u00a0Biden\u2019s priorities, to him. So what that means to us is just that he has a bit of work to do to just get that information out there. And that\u2019s probably the next step on his campaign,\u201d Aylward said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s reelection campaign spokesman Kevin Munoz said the focus is to \u201cmeet younger Americans where they are\u201d and mobilize their passion for the issues that impact them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYoung people are acutely impacted by the issues front and center in this election, driven by the extreme MAGA agenda which cuts costs for corporations but not students in debt, takes away fundamental rights, and fails to protect young Americans from our most urgent threats like gun violence and climate change,\u201d Munoz said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Munoz said Biden and Harris \u201care fighting for the future America\u2019s young people deserve, and as Democrats did in 2020 and 2022, we will meet younger Americans where they are and turn their energy into action as part of our winning 2024 coalition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The youth voting organization NextGen America has\u00a0endorsed the Biden 2024 campaign, and its president Cristina Tzintz\u00fan Ramirez said they did so \u201cso early\u201d in the race because of the administration\u2019s progressive policies, \u201cnot because he\u2019s a Democrat.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think this is the first election in my lifetime where we\u2019re going to see increased and hyper-focus on young voters from Democratic candidates,\u201d Tzintz\u00fan Ramirez said. \u201cIt is true that young people, a significant percentage, see themselves as independents, but they overwhelmingly vote for Democrats because they care about progressive policy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, she acknowledged \u201cthere\u2019s a huge portion\u201d of young people that need to be \u201cpersuaded\u201d to vote. \u201cAnd that\u2019s what we really see from the Harvard poll, is that young people still need to be told why their vote matters, but they are overwhelmingly progressive in their worldview.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Questions about young voters also come as Biden faces skepticism over his age. Now 80, he\u2019s the oldest sitting president and would be 86 by the end of a possible second term.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At age 77, Trump, the GOP front-runner, is just a few years younger than Biden.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tzintz\u00fan\u00a0Ramirez noted that, in 2020, the favored candidate for many youth voters was Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who is older than Biden.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is clear that what young people care about, again, is progressive policy. And that\u2019s why, for us, it doesn\u2019t matter what Joe Biden\u2019s age is \u2014 because Donald Trump is no spring chicken either,\u201d\u00a0Tzintz\u00fan\u00a0Ramirez said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Young voters are \u201cvery aware\u201d of how old the presidential candidates on both sides of the aisle are, said Aylward. But she argued that age won\u2019t \u201cactually prevent\u201d the voting bloc from backing Biden, given that many of his fellow White House hopefuls are near him in age.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Aylward said her firm is trying to track young voters who might be interested in casting their vote for a third-party candidate, particularly as Green Party candidate Cornel West has entered the 2024 White House race.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Looking at young voters who feel less attached to the Democratic party, she sees many pointing to the\u00a02016 presidential election, when some blamed Green Party nominee Jill Stein as a factor that contributed to then-Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton\u2019s defeat \u2014 saying they want to avoid a situation where a third-party vote \u201cjust means an even worse candidate would be put into office.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we still do see some folks saying that they aren\u2019t as enthusiastic for voting in 2024 and that that might lead to them either not participating or considering a third-party vote,\u201d Aylward cautioned.<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n        The Hill Elections 2024 coverage<br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Democratic strategist Antjuan Seawright said he thinks young people will again turn out in the 2024 race, but the Biden campaign must \u201cgo above and beyond and educate younger voters\u201d about what the administration has done for them in the last three years, and draw a stark contrast to \u201cexistential threats\u201d on the other side.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think they will be helpful all over this country to help save this country,\u201d Seawright said of young voters in the next cycle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut with that being said, I think the Biden campaign, and I think this administration \u2026 have to be very intentional about doing education on the legislation, and the implementation about the policies that have come as a result of their vote in the 2020 election and the 2022 midterms because they came out and voted,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> Inc.
