\n This year, the Emmy nominees for outstanding hosted nonfiction series<\/a> include Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy<\/em> (2021 and 2022\u2019s winner) and Taste the Nation With Padma Lakshmi<\/em>. It\u2019s fair to say these food travel<\/a>ogues owe their entr\u00e9e into awards contention to Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown<\/em>, which dominated the category in the 2010s and brought credibility to food programming in a field that had previously overlooked it. <\/p>\n

\n CNN\u2019s Parts Unknown<\/em>, which won 12 Primetime Emmys over 12 seasons \u2014 including six for outstanding informational series (as the category was known from 2013 to 2019) \u2014 was Bourdain\u2019s fourth series following A Cook\u2019s Tour<\/em> and Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations<\/em> on the Travel Channel, and Food Network\u2019s The Layover<\/em>. All were travel shows presented through the prism of food, but in Parts Unknown<\/em>, Bourdain \u2014 an executive chef at New York\u2019s Brasserie Les Halles who rose to fame for his tell-all memoir Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly<\/em> \u2014 delved into topics far outside the scope of tourism as he explored far-flung places, from Myanmar to Massachusetts, Lagos to Detroit. \u201cWith [Parts Unknown<\/em>], I\u2019m invested in every detail. It\u2019s my story from beginning to end, and it\u2019s very personal,\u201d he told THR <\/em>in 2014 (at right). For example, \u201cIt looks at my road to heroin, and parallels what\u2019s really happ<\/a>ening in small-town New England, which is this stunning explosion of hard-core heroin use.\u201d Other episodes unpacked real life across the globe: \u201cWhen you ask [\u2018What\u2019s for dinner?\u2019] in Lebanon, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Congo \u2014 you get very surprising, nuanced, complex answers that open people up,\u201d Bourdain explained. The series proved a hit for CNN, earning No. 1 in the Sunday 9 p.m. time slot in cable news<\/a> over its first three seasons. Bourdain was filming season 12 in Strasbourg, France, when he died by suicide in June 2018. He earned two posthumous Emmys for Parts Unknown<\/em>, for outstanding writing and outstanding informational series. <\/p>\n
