It is certainly known to most for its long pier and <\/span><b>Venetian-style architecture<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but there are indeed many unique aspects to this Slovenian town, let&#8217;s explore them together!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Piran_an_ancient_Slovenian_town\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Piran, an ancient Slovenian town<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Piran, a <\/span><b>tourist village in Slovenian territory<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is situated on a <\/span><b>rocky promontory<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is a town steeped in history and culture where you can feel the <\/span><b>solemnity of ancient times<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and, at the same time, feel the sparkling air of a town in <\/span><b>constant renewal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to tradition, it was founded by exiles from Aquileia who were forced to leave their homes after the invasion of the Hun king Attila.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most likely, its origins are even more ancient. It was probably inhabited for several centuries, although it was just a small community. Its development accelerated when, in <\/span><b>1283<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it became politically united with the powerful <\/span><b>Republic of Venice<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which brought wealth and growth to Piran. Thanks to its commercial relations with Venice and the exploitation of nearby salt pans, Piran evolved and adorned itself with <\/span><b>elegant palaces<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>bond with Venice<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was so strong that even after the fall of the Venetian Republic and the subsequent transfer to the Habsburg Empire, it did not dissolve completely. The <\/span><b>connection with Italy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> remained strong despite the transition to the Habsburg Empire. After World War I, Piran briefly became part of the Kingdom of Italy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, after Istria passed to Yugoslavia, almost all Italians were <\/span><b>forced into exile<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Yugoslav government. Those who remained, however, kept both the language and traditions alive. That&#8217;s why, many years later, with the birth of the Slovenian state, <\/span><b>Italian was recognized as an official language in Slovenian Istria<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Historical events, and ties that were formed only to be destroyed by wars have never erased the affinity between Italy and Istria Slovenia. That is why you may still hear Italian being spoken during your holiday in Piran!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_to_see_in_Piran\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to see in Piran<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Piran is a very interesting village that has a lot to offer. Our advice is to start at its beating heart, Tartini Square!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tartini_Square\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tartini Square<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tartini Square is dedicated to <\/span><b>Giuseppe Tartini<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the famous Slovenian violinist, composer (but also mathematician) born in 1692. In the centre of the square, Tartini&#8217;s statue will kick off your visit to Piran.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The square is truly beautiful, all surrounded by characteristic <\/span><b>historical buildings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and open to the sea through a corner that offers a very <\/span><b>suggestive panorama<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The square is embellished with numerous buildings in the typical Venetian architectural style. Their pastel-coloured facades and wooden shutters are particularly beautiful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We recommend that you do not miss:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>Prefecture Building<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: dating back to 1874;<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>Town Hall Building<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: dating back to 1878;<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>Venetian House<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: a 15th-century Venetian Gothic building with a beautiful corner balcony;<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>Tartini House<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: one of the oldest buildings in the city;<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>Church of St Peter<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: dating from 1272 but renovated in neoclassical style in 1818.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Monastery_of_St_Francis\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monastery of St Francis<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Convent of St Francis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was built before the 14th century, and still houses Franciscan Minor monks. The cloister is particularly beautiful and worth a visit. It is said to have excellent acoustics and is chosen as the venue for <\/span><b>important musical events<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as the Tartini Festival or the Serate Musicali Piranesi (Piran Musical Evenings).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"St_Georges_Cathedral\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St George&#8217;s Cathedral<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Cathedral of St George<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the town\u2019s patron saint, dominates Piran from a cliff. Originally a <\/span><b>Gothic three-aisled church<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it underwent several alterations in 1595 and 1637. Now there is a single, large nave and the ceiling is decorated with wood. The fa\u00e7ade is the classic gabled fa\u00e7ade and ends with a low gable with parts made of Rovinj stone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The baptistery, on the other hand, is Baroque in style and was built more recently.
