Ron DeSantis (R) has made moves in recent days to distance himself from Donald Trump over the 2020 election as the former president faces charges over his involvement in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with NBC <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> on Monday, DeSantis said \u201cof course\u201d Trump lost in 2020 and said President Biden is the legitimate president.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWhoever puts their hand on the Bible on Jan. 20 every four years is the winner,\u201d DeSantis said.<\/p>\n<p>The comments came days after Trump pleaded not guilty to charges in the Jan. 6 federal investigation.<\/p>\n<p>When pressed by NBC\u2019s Dasha Burns to give a \u201cyes or no\u201d answer on whether Trump lost, DeSantis responded, \u201cNo, of course he lost.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoe Biden\u2019s the president,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis went on to point out what he said were issues with the 2020 election, including concerns about the widespread availability of mail-in ballots, state laws that permitted third parties to collect ballots and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> platforms downplaying the story surrounding Hunter Biden\u2019s laptop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think what people in the media and elsewhere, they want to act like somehow this was just like the perfect election. \u2026 I don\u2019t think it was a good-run election,\u201d the governor said.\u00a0 \u201cBut I also think Republicans didn\u2019t fight back. You\u2019ve got to fight back when that is h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ening.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The comments also came after the governor said in Iowa on Friday that election fraud theories about the 2020 election \u201cdid not prove to be true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Together, the recent remarks are some of the most aggressive the governor has made regarding Trump since launching his campaign, a development that will encourage those Republicans who have urged the governor to step up his attacks on the frontrunner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReluctant Trump primary voters frustrated with the focus on the 2020 campaign may finally have a home,\u201d said Brian Seitchik, a Republican strategist and former Trump campaign staffer. \u201cI have believed for some time that the only way to beat Trump was not to wait for him to combust but aggressively shake his voters loose. Will it work? Who knows.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThis is Team DeSantis trying to draw Trump into a winner-loser conversation \u2014 a clear sore spot for the former president,\u201d Seitchik added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But some Republicans say they aren\u2019t sure DeSantis\u2019s comments represent a clear shift.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a little cautious about reading too much into it,\u201d said Justin Sayfie, a Florida-based GOP strategist. \u201cI think he was asked questions by a voter and by a journalist and he gave his answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI think that going forward if he gets asked these questions again, he can say \u2018I\u2019ve already answered it,\u2019\u201d Sayfie said. \u201cI\u2019ve got other things to talk about in terms of the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s campaign spokesman Steve Cheung was quick to hit back over the comments, saying that the Florida governor \u201cshould really stop being Joe Biden\u2019s biggest cheerleader.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Florida governor\u2019s comments also come with some political risks. A\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/08\/03\/politics\/cnn-poll-republicans-think-2020-election-illegitimate\/index.html\">CNN poll released earlier this month\u00a0<\/a>found that 69 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaners polled said Biden\u2019s 2020 win was not legitimate. That number is up from 63 percent earlier this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>And last month, an Associated Press-NORC poll found that only 22 percent of Republicans say they have high confidence that that votes in the 2024 election will be counted accurately.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat they\u2019re telling you in that poll is that they don\u2019t feel that it was free or fair,\u201d said Ford O\u2019Connell, a Florida-based Republican strategist. \u201cIf nearly three-quarters [feel that way], I don\u2019t know how that\u2019s going to help him.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But data also shows that issues other than the 2020 election take precedent for Republican voters. A\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2023\/06\/21\/inflation-health-costs-partisan-cooperation-among-the-nations-top-problems\/\">Pew Research poll<\/a>\u00a0released in June found that 77 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning Independents said that inflation is \u201ca very big problem,\u201d while \u201cmoral values,\u201d illegal immigration and the budget deficit were also viewed as top problems for GOP voters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cAn overwhelming majority of Republican voters are not going to base their votes in the 2024 presidential primary based on who they think won the 2020 election,\u201d Sayfie said. \u201cThere are other issues that are much more important than that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Connell said that DeSantis\u2019s remarks are part of his campaign\u2019s recent reset, an effort to gain more traction against Trump in the polls and generate headlines.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Monday\u2019s interview with NBC News is the latest mainstream interview DeSantis has taken part in recently after sticking with more right-leaning and local outlets following the launch of his campaign in May.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>In an email to reporters on Monday, DeSantis\u2019s campaign noted that the governor has also spoken to The Wall Street Journal, Fox News, ABC News, CBS News and CNN.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe DeSantis team is obviously trying to change things up and they realize that time is running out because Trump keeps getting stronger,\u201d O\u2019Connell said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the here and now it\u2019s about the lack of media oxygen,\u201d he said. \u201cThat is really what\u2019s dogging his campaign.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
