{"id":586179,"date":"2023-08-08T12:35:41","date_gmt":"2023-08-08T09:35:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/germanys-marvel-fusion-to-build-150m-laser-facility-in-us\/"},"modified":"2023-08-08T12:35:41","modified_gmt":"2023-08-08T09:35:41","slug":"germanys-marvel-fusion-to-build-150m-laser-facility-in-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/germanys-marvel-fusion-to-build-150m-laser-facility-in-us\/","title":{"rendered":"#Germany\u2019s Marvel Fusion to build $150M laser facility in US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img-cdn.tnwcdn.com\/image?fit=796%2C417&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn0.tnwcdn.com%2Fwp-content%2Fblogs.dir%2F1%2Ffiles%2F2023%2F08%2Fmarvel-fusion-energy.jpg&amp;signature=91a43336ed7a92aeefae1c3182d74622\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"article-main-content\">\n                            <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists are edging closer to a fusion energy system that doesn\u2019t rely on magnetic field-based <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tokamak reactors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or twisty <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stellarators<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">German startup Marvel Fusion has teamed up with Colorado State University to build the world\u2019s first facility dedicated to commercialising inertial confinement \u2014 a type of fusion reaction produced by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slamming atoms together many times per second using high-intensity lasers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interest in this type of fusion has increased since scientists at the US government\u2019s National Ignition Facility successfully <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/4b6f0fab-66ef-4e33-adec-cfc345589dc7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">achieved<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> net energy gain in a fusion reaction for the first time ever in December, and <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a9815bca-1b9d-4ba0-8d01-96ede77ba06a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">repeated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the feat again in July.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Net energy gain\u2019 basically means the reaction produced more energy than went into it \u2014 igniting hopes that fusion\u2019s promise of abundant, clean, and limitless energy may not be as far off as first thought.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper channel-cta\">\n<div class=\"ica-text\">\n<p class=\"ica-text__title\">Catch up on our conference talks<\/p>\n<p>Watch videos of our past talks for free with TNW All Access \u2192<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there\u2019s a huge difference between achieving net energy gain and making a commercial fusion power system \u2014 you\u2019d need to produce these fusion blasts at a rate of nearly 10 per second to generate energy around the clock.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is exactly what Marvel Fusion wants to do. The $150m laser facility, located at CSU\u2019s campus in Fort Collins, would feature at least three laser systems, each with multi-petawatt peak power and an ultra-fast repetition of the ten flashes per second rate required to generate ongoing fusion energy. The startup is targeting completion of the laser facility in 2026.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis public-private partnership sets the global standard for laser-based fusion research, propelling the development of a safe, clean, and reliable energy source,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said Moritz von der Linden, CEO of Marvel Fusion.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Marvel Fusion has established a subsidiary in Colorado to support this collaboration, the company\u2019s headquarter remains in Munich, Germany.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked why he chose the US von der Linden told the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/12c48481-d78e-4c85-bf83-e1252f0f1772\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that it was the \u201cfastest, most capital-efficient way for us to move on building this facility.\u201d There is simply more funding and an <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>etite for this kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> across the pond, he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevertheless, he doesn\u2019t necessarily intend on building a full-scale commercial plant in the US. \u201cIt could very well, maybe hopefully, be in Europe,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marvel Fusion will continue its laser experiments at the Ludwig-Maximilian Unversity\u2019s CALA laser near Munich, and at the ELI-NP laser centre in Romania \u2014 the world\u2019s most powerful of its kind.\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>\n                        <\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
