{"id":586196,"date":"2023-08-08T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-08T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/trumps-legal-troubles-put-gop-rivals-in-a-bind\/"},"modified":"2023-08-08T13:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-08-08T10:00:00","slug":"trumps-legal-troubles-put-gop-rivals-in-a-bind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/trumps-legal-troubles-put-gop-rivals-in-a-bind\/","title":{"rendered":"#Trump\u2019s legal troubles put GOP rivals in a bind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/trumpdonald_080423_ap_memo-trumpattacks.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Former President Trump\u2019s legal woes are overshadowing everything else in the political world \u2014 but they are causing much more serious political problems for his GOP rivals than for his own candidacy.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s become next to impossible for the Republicans chasing Trump to get traction, or even attention for their ideas, while the maelstrom swirls around him.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Trump was indicted in a third case last week, relating to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election. He has previously been indicted in New York in April regarding the alleged falsification of business records, and in June in Florida relating to the sensitive documents uncovered at Mar-a-Lago.<\/p>\n<p>An investigation in Georgia into efforts by Trump and his allies to overturn the election result in that state could produce more charges any day now.<\/p>\n<p>In aggregate, those events would be politically fatal to any other candidate. To be sure, they could wound Trump badly in a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> election if he becomes the GOP nominee.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>An ABC <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>\/Ipsos poll released Friday indicated that 52 percent of Americans believe Trump should indeed have been charged in the latest indictment, compared to 32 percent who thought he should not have been charged.<\/p>\n<p>But Trump is leading the GOP field by almost 40 points in national polling averages and, if his previous two indictments are any guide, he will likely get a fundraising boost in response to his most recent legal troubles.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, his rivals trail far in his wake.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cLook, they are on an impossible road,\u201d said former Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.), who ran a long-shot campaign against Trump for the GOP nomination in 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Walsh argued that Trump\u2019s rivals can\u2019t win by frontally opposing him, because of his popularity with the Republican base, \u201cbut if they embrace him, they can\u2019t then really differentiate themselves from him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That conundrum is made all the more difficult when Trump commands the news headlines, even for negative reasons.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Walsh drew a comparison with the initial publicity his own bid received in its early days of the 2020 cycle before news broke of the Ukraine-related events that led to Trump\u2019s first impeachment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat became the biggest story in the country for three months,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p>Far from trying to move past his legal troubles, Trump has instead sparked further controversies that could be designed, at least in part, to keep controversy blazing \u2014 and perhaps to prolong the period before any trial.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>On Sunday, he demanded the recusal of U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who has been randomly assigned to his case, contending that \u201cthere is no way I can get a fair trial\u201d under her.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, special counsel Jack Smith had cited a Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> post \u2014 \u201cIf you go after me, I\u2019m coming after you!,\u201d it said \u2014 in a Friday court filing seeking a protective order to curb public disclosure of information provided under the discovery process in the case.<\/p>\n<p>There are some signs that Trump\u2019s rivals are recalibrating their <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach in response to the most recent developments.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Former Vice President Mike Pence has been direct in outlining his differences with Trump over the then-president\u2019s efforts to pressure him to overturn the 2020 election result.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Trump was wrong then and he\u2019s wrong now,\u201d Pence said on CNN\u2019s \u201cState of the Union\u201d on Sunday. \u201cI had no right to overturn the election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Trump\u2019s closest, if distant, GOP rival told NBC News in an interview broadcast Monday \u201cof course he lost,\u201d in reference to Trump\u2019s fate in the 2020 election. \u201cJoe Biden\u2019s the president.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>DeSantis\u2019s comment is plainly true, but polling has consistently shown around 70 percent of Republican voters refuse to accept the legitimacy of President Biden\u2019s victory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new Ron DeSantis view \u2014 \u2018Of course Trump lost\u2019 \u2014 is a new, big change in the DeSantis approach,\u201d said Jamil Jaffer, who served as associate counsel to former President George W. Bush. \u201cThat should not be undercounted, because this is the first time his principal rival is saying that he lost and there is no question about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Others argue that, for all of Trump\u2019s strengths with the Republican base, questions about his capacity to win a general election will ultimately undercut his candidacy. His nomination is far from a foregone conclusion, they contend.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Barry Bennett, who was a senior adviser to Trump\u2019s 2016 campaign but is supporting Miami Mayor Francis Suarez (R) in this campaign, contended that questions over \u201cwinnability\u201d were Trump\u2019s Achilles\u2019 heel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump\u2019s path is like the Titanic; you don\u2019t turn 90 degrees just like that,\u201d Bennett claimed. \u201cIt takes a while. There is not going to be this one day where there will be a poll and people will have abandoned Trump. That\u2019s just not the way it works. They have to get comfortable with their next choice. I think it is a much slower, more\u00a0deliberative process.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But even Bennett acknowledged that Trump\u2019s long shadow over the news agenda was a problem for this GOP rivals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt certainly makes it more difficult, because every time you do a TV hit or a media interview, the only questions are what you think about Trump,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Independent experts agree \u2014 and argue that no competitor to Trump has yet found a way to thread the needle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time they turn around, they are being asked to comment on his latest troubles, and many of them are not happy about that,\u201d said Danielle Vinson, a professor of politics and international affairs at Furman University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Nikki Haleys and Tim Scotts would much rather talk about something else,\u201d Vinson added. \u201cBut anybody who is interested in becoming the front-runner is going to have to find a way to knock him off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Memo is a reported column by Niall Stanage.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
