Sherrod Brown (D) faces a competitive Senate race next year.<\/p>\n<p>Voters in the Buckeye State\u00a0on Tuesday\u00a0overwhelmingly rejected Issue 1, a ballot measure pushed by Republican leaders in the state that would have made it harder to enshrine abortion rights in its constitution.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The victory for Democrats and reproductive rights advocates is the latest sign that their messaging on abortion is resonating with voters, even in red states like Ohio. But they acknowledge the challenges Brown faces heading into one of the most closely watched races next year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery election is a battle in this state. We know that.\u00a0So\u00a0we will not take our focus off the fights as they come,\u201d said Ohio Democratic Party Chairwoman Liz Walters during a press conference Wednesday.\u00a0\u201cBut we do see valuable lessons coming out of this fight, whether that is cultivating what is the map of the future \u2026 for Ohio Democrats, which is a long-term part of our work, but more importantly, how we mobilize grassroots activists across the state for the fight in November.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Walters said\u00a0the referendums\u00a0like Issue 1 and the abortion rights measure help clarify to voters\u00a0what candidates and parties\u2019 positions are on the issues. She added that they will\u00a0specifically make the stances of Brown\u2019s reelection campaign clear to voters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Issue 1 would have raised the threshold for the passage of future constitutional amendments to 60 percent from the current simple majority. Additionally, it would have added restrictions that make getting a measure on the ballot more difficult.\u00a0That would have added an extra barrier to the abortion rights amendment set to be voted on in November.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But voters comfortably\u00a0rejected\u00a0the\u00a0measure,\u00a0with about 57 percent voting against it as of Wednesday afternoon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Brown\u2019s\u00a0campaign\u00a0was already\u00a0touting the win\u00a0in a fundraising email Wednesday.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWe were victorious last night in defeating special interests and keeping power where it belongs \u2014 in the hands of voters,\u201d the email read.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Republicans say they are not as\u00a0convinced abortion will play a definitive role in the Senate race next year, particularly if voters move to enshrine abortion rights into the state\u2019s constitution this November.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe question will be decided already,\u201d one Ohio-based Republican strategist told The Hill.\u00a0\u201cI wouldn\u2019t smoke too many cigars or do too many victory laps.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Polling has shown the abortion measure <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears to\u00a0be popular with a majority of Ohio voters.\u00a0A\u00a0poll conducted late last month\u00a0showed\u00a058 percent of likely voters said they support the measure, while only 32 percent said they oppose it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Democrats expressed optimism that the defeat of Issue 1 underscores the importance for\u00a0voters of the abortion measure and will fuel momentum to get it passed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The party was successful in tying their GOP opponents to the issue last year across the country, resulting in Republicans underperforming in what was supposed to be a successful midterm election for them.\u00a0However, Ohio\u2019s Senate race was one of the exceptions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIn \u201922 Tim Ryan talked about it and J.D. Vance talked about it. J.D. Vance won by\u00a06\u00a0points. And this is a presidential year, so turnout will be high,\u201d the Ohio-based Republican strategist noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Brown\u2019s seat will be one of the top GOP targets as Republicans try to win back a majority in the Senate. Brown is one of three incumbent Democrats running for reelection in states that voted for former President Trump twice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ohio\u00a0Secretary of\u00a0State Frank LaRose, one of the candidates running for the GOP nomination\u00a0for Brown\u2019s seat,\u00a0tied himself\u00a0closely\u00a0to the issue\u00a0as one of the most vocal advocates for the measure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Matt Caffrey, the national organizing director at Swing Left, a progressive organization that works to elect Democrats to Congress, said LaRose\u00a0was the \u201cposter child\u201d for Issue 1\u00a0and he could be harmed by his advocacy for the issue\u00a0in a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> election.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt\u00a0the end of the day, I think this whole episode has left a bad taste in people\u2019s mouths. And I do think\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0going to regret the role he played in this fight,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>LaRose\u00a0largely argued\u00a0the measure was intended to keep special interests and out-of-state actors from influencing the Ohio constitution, but he\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ohiocapitaljournal.com\/2023\/06\/05\/ohio-sec-of-state-larose-admits-making-constitution-harder-to-amend-is-100-about-abortion\/\">faced\u00a0controversy over comments<\/a> he made earlier this year that this was \u201c100 percent\u201d about stopping the abortion amendment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI certainly think that\u2019s\u00a0a\u00a0help for us, to have Frank LaRose bring this unpopular, anti-democratic constitutional amendment in favor of this unpopular abortion ban,\u201d Caffrey added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A six-week abortion ban went into effect after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last year. The ban was temporarily paused a few months later while legal battles play out.<\/p>\n<p>The three GOP Senate contenders \u2014 LaRose, business entrepreneur Bernie Moreno and state Sen. Matt Dolan (R) \u2014 have expressed support for the measure. LaRose even called on Moreno and Dolan to each donate $1 million to support Issue 1.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Jeff Rusnak,\u00a0an Ohio-based strategist who opposed Issue 1 and supports the abortion measure,\u00a0said \u201ca lot of opportunity\u201d exists for Brown to\u00a0pick up votes in his reelection bid.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He said he\u00a0compared Brown\u2019s performance in 2018\u00a0to Trump\u2019s in the state in 2020 and the results from Tuesday\u2019s vote.\u00a0He said in some cases the \u201cno\u201d votes performed multiple points better than Brown did in certain areas of the state in 2018.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think this can only help him. I think the other thing that we have is that we have a newly energized and focused electorate and set of volunteers who have come out and said that this issue is a priority for them,\u201d Rusnak said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He added that he expects LaRose to \u201cpay a steep price\u201d for his\u00a0idea for the amendment,\u00a0which he called\u00a0a \u201cmassive failure.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Republicans, on the other hand, reject the notion that August\u2019s vote will end up haunting any of the candidates next year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy the time the Republican primary happens next March, very few people will be thinking about the August election,\u201d said Mark Weaver, an Ohio-based\u00a0GOP strategist. \u201cMany more people will be thinking about the November 2023 election about the abortion question.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of whether the abortion ballot measure is approved, Republicans say they will not take Brown as an opponent for granted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRepublicans would be foolhardy not to take Sherrod Brown as the most serious of challenges because he has a track record to prove it,\u201d the Ohio-based GOP strategist said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re\u00a0going to have to nominate the best person and they\u2019re\u00a0going to have to run a\u00a0very good\u00a0campaign to defeat Sherrod Brown.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> Inc.
