I don\u2019t think [they] really understand stores are open and, if they\u2019re open, how are they open,\u201d said John Koch, the owner of John Koch Antiques on the Upper West Side.<\/p>\n<p>Koch, 60, described the months-long coronavirus shutdown as the \u201cretail apocalypse\u201d and said that, even with the partial reopening, he was \u201cnot optimistic about the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, he sent out email alerts to clients and had installed 10 chairs Wednesday outside his shop on 84th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15814583\"><img alt=\"John Koch\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>John Koch is seen at his store.<\/span><span>Tamara Beckwith<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201c[It\u2019s] one of the ways we\u2019re telling people that we\u2019re open,\u201d Koch told The Post. \u201cMaybe they\u2019ll inquire if they see furniture outside on the sidewalk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under New York City\u2019s Phase One reopening, which began Monday, a smattering of businesses large and small reopened to serve customers outside or to have them pick up previously ordered items.<\/p>\n<p>At Harry\u2019s Shoes, on 84th Street and Broadway, staffers even set up seating for people to try on footwear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s pretty fun to try on shoes outside because it\u2019s so nice out today,\u201d said Helen Schulman, 59, a novelist who kept her hand sanitizer handy as she hunted for Birkenstocks.<\/p>\n<p>Emily Little, who was looking for shoes for her two- year-old son George, said it felt \u201cgood\u201d to finally be out shopping.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15814585\"><img alt=\"Upper West sandals\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Emily Little buys sandals for 2 her two year-old George.<\/span><span>Tamara Beckwith<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cPart of me feel like I need to watch myself\u2026,\u201d Little said. \u201cI need to be strategic with things I buy because everything is tight with finances right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Allowing customers to try on shoes outside has been helpful with sales, said Brian Wixson, the store\u2019s assistant manager for women\u2019s shoes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s challenging! As far as business, it\u2019s been good under the circumstances,\u201d said Wixson. \u201cWe expected to just be doing web business and pickup. Customers trying on shoes outside has been helpful for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything is spaced out, so I\u2019m not concerned about <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> distancing \u2014 I\u2019m concerned about people strolling in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a handful of mask-wearing customers browsed linens and bedding outside Down &#038; Quilt Shop on Amsterdam Avenue near 85th Street.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s kind of weird. We\u2019ve never shopped like this,\u201d said 21-year-old Sarah Getzler. \u201cWe were looking and happened to come by.
