Nancy Pelosi is off the bench as former President Trump\u2019s top adversary on Capitol Hill.<\/p>\n<p>After stepping down as Speaker last year, Pelosi (D-Calif.) has flown largely under the radar in the Democratic caucus, allowing a crop of new leaders to take control of the group she steered for two decades.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>But the California Democrat \u2014 now with the title of \u201cSpeaker Emerita\u201d \u2014 resumed her role of top Trump antagonist following his latest indictment, landing blows on the former president, praising the charges, and showcasing her unique ability to get under the skin of the man with whom she went toe-to-toe during the four years he occupied the White House.<\/p>\n<p>The bitter dynamics between the two leaders were on full display as Trump was indicted on charges stemming from his efforts to overturn the 2020 election ahead of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol rampage \u2014 a day for which Pelosi has said she would\u00a0\u201cnever forgive\u201d\u00a0Trump.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t in the courtroom, of course, but when I saw his coming out of his car and this or that, I saw a scared puppy,\u201d Pelosi on Friday told MSNBC\u2019s Andrea Mitchell of Trump arriving at his arraignment. \u201cHe looked very, very, very concerned about the fate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t see any bravado or confidence or anything like that,\u201d she continued. \u201cHe knows the truth \u2014 that he lost the election and now he\u2019s got to face the music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump responded to the remarks on Tuesday,\u00a0tearing into Pelosi \u2014 \u201cShe is a Wicked Witch\u201d \u2014 while referencing last year\u2019s violent attack on her husband, Paul Pelosi. An assailant looking for the then-Speaker entered the couple\u2019s San Francisco residence and hit Paul Pelosi in the head with a hammer, leaving him with serious injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Trump at the time called the attack\u00a0\u201ca terrible thing\u201d\u00a0without remarking further.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI purposely didn\u2019t comment on Nancy Pelosi\u2019s very weird story concerning her husband, but now I can because she said something about me, with glee, that was really quite vicious. \u2018I saw a scared puppy,\u2019 she said, as she watched me on television, like millions of others,\u00a0 that didn\u2019t see that. I wasn\u2019t \u2018scared,\u2019\u201d Trump wrote on\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/110842705795010789\">Truth Social<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNevertheless, how mean a thing to say! She is a Wicked Witch whose husbands journey from hell starts and finishes with her. She is a sick &amp; demented psycho who will someday live in HELL!\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The verbal tit-for-tat is nothing new for Trump and Pelosi, who engaged in name-calling while sparring across Pennsylvania Avenue during Trump\u2019s presidency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Pelosi labeled Trump a \u201ccoward\u201d and said he was \u201cmorbidly obese.\u201d She\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/facethenation\/status\/1195481643978498049?s=46&amp;t=17vPSYwy2RIzhm_DoaOV-g\">once referred to him as<\/a>\u00a0an \u201cimpostor\u201d who \u201cknows full well he\u2019s in that office way over his head,\u201d and she famously tore up Trump\u2019s State of the Union speech while standing behind the president on the dais.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump, meanwhile, frequently referred to Pelosi as \u201ccrazy Nancy\u201d and once called her \u201ca nasty, vindictive, horrible person.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The acrimonious relationship between the two leaders hit a fever pitch with Trump\u2019s second impeachment, which Pelosi, as Speaker, staged a vote on shortly after the Capitol riot and just days before the president was set to leave office \u2014\u00a0making Trump the only U.S. president to be impeached twice. The Senate acquitted him both times.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Pelosi, whose office rioters broke into and whose name they chanted in the Capitol\u2019s halls, also established the select committee that went on to probe the rampage and present its findings to the public through a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of high-profile hearings \u2014\u00a0a group that Trump criticized time and time again. She\u00a0created the select committee\u00a0after Senate Republicans blocked legislation to create an independent panel similar to the 9\/11 Commission to probe the Capitol riot.<\/p>\n<p>That panel helped lay the groundwork for the Justice Department\u2019s indictment, which bore several similarities to testimony the Jan. 6 committee received during its year-plus investigation. And the list of charges Trump now faces includes two crimes the committee recommended \u2014\u00a0conspiracy to defraud the U.S. and conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding.<\/p>\n<p>Before the select committee dissolved, Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) and then-Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), the ranking member, said the panel \u201cmade an enormous volume of material available to the Special Counsel.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Pelosi has maintained a relatively low profile since bowing out of leadership \u2014\u00a0she\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/san-francisco-nancy-pelosi-congress-government-and-politics-a9c6b5e7c01989f1f9cb78bc853ba830\">told reporters<\/a>\u00a0after announcing her plans to step down that she did not want to be \u201cthe mother-in-law in the kitchen saying \u2018my son doesn\u2019t like the stuffing that way.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the Speaker Emerita did several <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> interviews following Trump\u2019s latest indictment, giving herself an opportunity to comment on the charges against her top political opponent which, in a way, were set in motion by the panel she established.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe indictments against the president are exquisite,\u201d Pelosi told\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2023\/08\/how-nancy-pelosi-long-game-led-to-trumps-indictment.html\">New York Magazine<\/a>\u00a0in an interview published this week, referring to the recent charges connected to Jan. 6 and the indictment against Trump pertaining to his handling of classified documents.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re beautiful and intricate, and they probably have a better chance of conviction than anything that I would come up with,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>And the California Democrat \u2014\u00a0who told New York Magazine, \u201cI knew on Jan. 6 that he had committed a crime\u201d \u2014 was not shy to point out the resemblance between the select committee\u2019s work and the indictment against Trump.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want to commend the Jan. 6 Committee, the House committee, bipartisan committee, Bennie Thompson and Liz Cheney and all the members of the committee and the staff for the work that they did,\u201d Pelosi told CNN\u2019s Jake T<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>er in an interview last week. \u201cThey laid a foundation of facts, about facts and the law, and made a criminal referral to the Justice Department.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t our role to know what the Justice Department would do, if anything,\u201d she later added. \u201cSo, when it became clear that there would be criminal charges made, it\u2019s interesting to see how similar they are to some of the charges recommended by the Jan. 6 Committee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pelosi\u2019s reemergence as Trump\u2019s fiercest foe comes as the former president is mounting a comeback bid for the White House, during which he has continued to call the 2020 election \u201crigged\u201d and \u201cstolen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She is airing warnings about another Trump term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t even think of that,\u201d Pelosi told New York Magazine. \u201cDon\u2019t think of the world being on fire. It cannot happen, or we will not be the United States of America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he were to be president,\u201d she added, \u201cit would be a criminal enterprise in the White House.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But as for Trump\u2019s legal fate, Pelosi is waiting patiently for the legal process to play out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow it\u2019s in the court of law,\u201d Pelosi told MSNBC\u2019s Lawrence O\u2019Donnell. \u201cHe\u2019s innocent until proven guilty, he is not above the law, the facts and the law will determine the outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
