Joe Manchin (D) says he is \u201cthinking seriously\u201d about leaving the Democratic Party and declaring himself an Independent before the 2024 election, when he will have to decide whether to run for a fourth Senate term or wage a third-party bid for president. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Manchin, who earlier this year described himself as an independent Democrat, told West Virginia radio host Hoppy Kercheval Thursday that the Democratic brand has \u201cbecome so bad.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m thinking seriously. For me, I have to have peace of mind, basically. The brand has become so bad \u2014 the D brand and R brand. In West Virginia, the D brand because it\u2019s [the] national brand. It\u2019s not the Democrats in West Virginia, it\u2019s the Democrats in Washington. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve heard me say a million times I\u2019m not a Washington Democrat,\u201d he said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pressed by Kercheval, the host of \u201cTalkline\u201d on West Virginia Metro <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>, whether he\u2019s really serious about becoming an Independent, Manchin said, \u201cI would think very seriously about that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been thinking about that for quite some time. I haven\u2019t made any decisions whatsoever on any of my political direction. I want to make sure that my voice is truly an independent voice,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen I do speak, I want to be able to speak honestly about basically the extremes of the Democrat and Republican Party that\u2019s harming our nation.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The senator\u2019s flirtation with becoming an Independent comes eight months after Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (Ariz.) announced her decision to leave the Democratic Party and register as an Independent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sinema said in December, \u201cI\u2019ve never fit neatly into any party box. I\u2019ve never really tried. I don\u2019t want to.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Manchin, however, said he\u2019s not ready to make an announcement about his future with the Democratic Party im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely, telling the West Virginia news anchor: \u201cWhen I get ready to make a decision, I\u2019ll come see you.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Manchin says he will decide at the end of the year whether to run for a fourth Senate term or run for president as a third-party candidate backed by No Labels, a bipartisan centrist group that plans to raise $70 million to put an independent, third-party candidate on the presidential ballot next year. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The senior senator from West Virginia faces a tough reelection race in a state that former President Trump carried with 68 percent of the vote in 2016 and 29 percent in 2020. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>An East Carolina Center for Survey Research poll published in May showed Manchin trailing West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice (R) by 22 percentage points in a hypothetical Senate race. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Justice is running for Manchin\u2019s seat but first must defeat Rep. Alex Mooney (R-W.Va.) in the Republican primary. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Democratic strategist David Axelrod earlier this year speculated that Manchin may decide to run for president as \u201ca graceful exit\u201d from the Senate, instead of risking defeat in West Virginia. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>But Manchin\u2019s colleagues on both sides of the aisle have warned that if he runs for president in 2024, he will likely wind up helping Trump \u2014 who is leading the rest of the GOP presidential primary field by more than 30 points \u2014 win the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> election. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe No Labels effort would elect Donald Trump,\u201d Sen.\u00a0Mitt Romney\u00a0(R-Utah), a prominent Trump critic, warned last month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked my chief strategist: \u2018What would a candidate have to be like in order to draw [voters] from Donald Trump as opposed to drawing from Joe Biden?\u2019 He said it would have to be someone to the right of Donald Trump,\u201d Romney said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Manchin on Thursday, however, disputed predictions that he would hurt Biden and help Trump if he ran for president. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t see that favoring either side because you just can\u2019t tell how this is going to break,\u201d he said. \u201cIf come January and February of next year these are still the main contenders, Donald Trump and Joe Biden, that\u2019s a whole other scenario. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they are not \u2014 and it could break between now and then \u2014 that changes the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> completely,\u201d he argued. \u201cThe bottom line is, \u2018Will the middle speak up? Does the middle have a voice?\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Manchin argued that \u201cmoderate, centrist Republicans\u201d feel like \u201cthey don\u2019t have a voice anymore\u201d in a political landscape where Trump dominates Republican Party politics. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the Democratic Party that I grew up with was responsible, I said they\u2019re socially compassionate and fiscally responsible, they\u2019ve got nowhere to go,\u201d he said. \u201cSo if we can create a movement, Hoppy, that people understand, we could have a voice. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe could make a big, big splash and maybe bring the traditional parties of the Democratic and Republican Party [to] what they used to be, back to what they should be today,\u201d he said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>He declared both parties have \u201cgone off the Richter scale.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t accept either party, to be honest with you,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
