Gavin <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>om (D) and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) consider an in-person face-off this fall, strategists across the political spectrum see a shared opportunity for the governors to position themselves as the future of their respective bases.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While Newsom has for months been\u00a0seeking\u00a0to\u00a0debate DeSantis\u00a0\u2014 and\u00a0both\u00a0governors\u00a0are notorious for slamming each other\u2019s policies\u00a0\u2014\u00a0only in the past couple\u00a0weeks\u00a0did\u00a0plans for a televised tete-a-tete\u00a0become semi-official.\u00a0Newsom sent Fox News\u2019s Sean Hannity\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/664220969\/Newsom-Debate-Proposal-July-28\">an offer<\/a>\u00a0delineating his terms of participation\u00a0at the end of July,\u00a0after which DeSantis followed up with his own\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/664431460\/Counterproposal\">counterproposal.<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The proposed debate comes as DeSantis struggles to gain traction\u00a0against former President Trump\u00a0in the Republican presidential primary\u00a0after he was touted as\u00a0a viable\u00a0alternative to replace\u00a0Trump as the party\u2019s standard bearer.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats say that Newsom, on the\u00a0other\u00a0hand, is increasingly being viewed as a\u00a0leading candidate in the 2028 race or even as\u00a0a possible\u00a0alternative\u00a0to President Biden\u00a0if he quits the 2024 race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no downside at all for Newsom,\u201d Daniel Schnur, a Republican-turned-Independent political strategist,\u00a0told The Hill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Biden does run for reelection next year, this is excellent national exposure for the future. If Biden were to step aside, Newsom will have positioned himself as a plausible successor,\u201d\u00a0said Schnur, who teaches political communications at several California universities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEither way, this is an immense boost to Newsom\u2019s profile and will be of great benefit to him at some point,\u201d\u00a0he added.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans say the debate\u00a0provides\u00a0an opportunity for both candidates.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI think there\u2019s a lot of\u00a0upside\u00a0in it for Gov. DeSantis and quite frankly, there\u2019s upside in it for Gov. Newsom\u00a0for the same reason,\u201d said Justin\u00a0Sayfie, a Florida-based Republican strategist.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the current political\u00a0age\u00a0we\u2019re living in, voters want to see that the people they\u2019re going to vote for can win the rhetorical battle against the other\u00a0side,\u201d he continued. \u201cThis gives both candidates an opportunity to\u00a0showcase\u00a0that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The debate also gives DeSantis, 44,\u00a0the opportunity\u00a0to\u00a0emerge\u00a0in\u00a0the public eye\u00a0as\u00a0the future of the Republican Party\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and\u00a0as\u00a0a candidate with the strength to take on Newsom,\u00a0who\u00a0at 55\u00a0is seen as one of the\u00a0Democratic\u00a0party\u2019s younger stars.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThat debate stage later this month will be crowded with a bunch of other Republicans on it,\u201d\u00a0Sayfie\u00a0said. \u201cThis gives DeSantis an opportunity not\u00a0to share the stage with\u00a0any other\u00a0Republicans.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump has dominated the Republican primary polls and news cycle, making it difficult for the Florida governor to\u00a0break out of\u00a0second\u00a0place.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHunter [Biden] and Joe [Biden] and Donald Trump are taking up\u00a0all of\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> oxygen.\u00a0So\u00a0this is a way the DeSantis team feels that they can get the spotlight on them,\u201d said\u00a0Ford O\u2019Connell, a Florida-based Republican strategist.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cit\u2019s the inability to get the media to focus on what he\u2019s saying or on his campaign,\u201d O\u2019Connell said. \u201cThat is really what I see that debate being about.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/664426528\/DeSantis-vs-Newsom-Debate-PDF\">a memo<\/a>\u00a0sent to donors and supporters last week, DeSantis\u2019s team emphasized that the debate was not\u00a0about \u201cCalifornia vs. Florida.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRon DeSantis is debating Gavin Newsom to highlight the choice facing American voters next year,\u201d the memo reads. \u201cThe left wants America to follow the path of California\u2019s decline\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Ron DeSantis wants to reignite the American Dream, restore sanity and ensure our nation\u2019s best days are ahead.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>However, DeSantis\u2019s campaign\u00a0did not hesitate to compare the two states in the memo,\u00a0declaring\u00a0that\u00a0California \u201cembodies American decline, while Florida is the blueprint for the Great American Comeback.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI absolutely think the debate with Gov. Newsom is a good idea,\u201d said Dan Eberhart, a DeSantis donor. \u201cIt gives Gov. DeSantis a platform to talk about what he\u2019s done effectively in Florida and a successful red state\u2019s vision for the future of America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The debate, which is likely to occur in November, was initially proposed by Newsom\u2019s team, who\u00a0on July 28\u00a0sent\u00a0Hannity\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/664220969\/Newsom-Debate-Proposal-July-28\">an\u00a0email<\/a>\u00a0suggesting a\u00a0televised \u201cRed v. Blue Debate\u201d that would focus \u201con the impact of representation at the state level.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Within the proposal\u00a0were stipulations that the two governors be the only speakers at the 90-minute, in-studio debate, which would be solely moderated by Hannity and aired live on Fox News.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While the governors would not be able to\u00a0bring\u00a0notes on stage, they would have access to a pen and pad during their conversation, per the proposal.\u00a0Hannity would \u201cask all questions, ensure that equal time is\u00a0maintained\u00a0and that governors do not interrupt each other during their designated time to speak.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A coin toss would\u00a0determine\u00a0which governor speaks first, with each person receiving\u00a0four\u00a0minutes maximum for an opening address.\u00a0The loser would make the first closing remarks, which would be up to\u00a0two\u00a0minutes\u00a0each.\u00a0During the debate, the participants would take turns responding to questions\u00a0in\u00a090 seconds, with\u00a0the same\u00a0amount\u00a0of time\u00a0allocated\u00a0for a rebuttal.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Newsom and his team suggested Nevada,\u00a0Georgia\u00a0or North Carolina as potential locations for the debate,\u00a0due to their\u00a0positions as either\u00a0battleground or purple states.\u00a0They\u00a0offered Nov. 8 or 10 \u2014\u00a0immediately\u00a0after the 2023 Election Day \u2014\u00a0as\u00a0possible dates\u00a0for the debate.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis\u2019s\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/664431460\/Counterproposal\">counteroffer<\/a>\u00a0suggested that the governors each record\u00a0a video\u00a0\u201cto make the case for their governing philosophy\u201d\u00a0instead of offering opening statements, according to a memo first obtained by Politico.\u00a0\u00a0Additionally, the proposal called for the forum to be held in front of a live audience.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nathan Click, a spokesperson for Newsom, characterized DeSantis\u2019s\u00a0counterproposal\u00a0as \u201ca joke,\u201d in a written statement shared with\u00a0The Hill.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He described the offer as \u201clittered with crutches to hide his insecurity and ineptitude,\u201d while accusing the Florida governor of \u201csw<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ing opening statements with a hype video, cutting down the time he needs to be on stage, adding cheat notes and a cheering section.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRon should be able to stand on his own two feet,\u201d Click continued. \u201cIt\u2019s no wonder Trump is kicking his ass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evaluating the potential pros and cons of holding such a debate, political scientist Eric Schickler\u00a0deemed\u00a0the proposed event as \u201cmostly reward for Newsom.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s unlikely that Democratic voters would judge him as losing this debate, and so in that sense, it only raises his profile,\u201d Schickler, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, told The Hill.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom comes in with the advantage of not only being \u201ca pretty good debater,\u201d but also with the feelings of intense dislike for DeSantis among Democrats, according to Schickler.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want to be a part of the conversation \u2014 seen as a Democrat who can really take on the Republicans,\u201d the professor said. \u201cBeing one of the handful of Democrats who are seen as strong potential 2028 candidates\u00a0is\u00a0important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He acknowledged, however, that the positive impact for Newsom could become less powerful if DeSantis\u2019s potential as a presidential candidate continues to weaken.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen [Newsom] issued the invitation initially, DeSantis seemed like the most likely alternative to Trump and potentially the person who beat Trump,\u201d Schickler said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Newsom to beat DeSantis or be seen as taking him on is a kind of feather in his cap \u2014 it\u2019s maybe a little less so if DeSantis continues to fade,\u201d he added.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Schicker also referred to the likelihood that DeSantis would try to attack Newsom on certain local issues, including the Florida governor\u2019s claims that Californians are flocking to his state.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problems California is having \u2014 with housing, homelessness and so on \u2014 certainly is a big obstacle, probably the most significant obstacle facing Newsom,\u201d he said, stressing a need for demonstrable progress on these matters.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, however, Newsom is also likely to call out DeSantis on many of Florida\u2019s contentious issues, including secondary and higher education and abortion, Schickler added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Schnur, the Republican-turned-Independent strategist, echoed these sentiments, noting that in addition to gaining national media attention, Newsom could gain \u201ctremendous political benefit\u201d at home in California as well.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is facing some very difficult fights on housing, health care, homelessness and environmental policy, all of which divide Democratic voters,\u201d Schnur said. \u201cThe debate is an ideal way to remind his supporters here that he is on their side.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
