\n When choreographer Jamal Sims was working on two of the projects for which he now has Emmy nominations, he was experiencing a bit of whiplash. After all, he was planning ABC\u2019s Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration<\/em> and Disney+\u2019s Encanto at the Hollywood Bowl <\/em>at the same time. \u201cI would leave rehearsal from Beauty and the Beast<\/em> and go down the street not even a mile and go into the rehearsal for Encanto<\/em> right after,\u201d he says. \u201cUsually you can decompress after. I didn\u2019t have that.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n The music at least helped him get into the right headspace. \u201cThey are such different sounding shows,\u201d he says, noting of the latter, \u201cThe minute those songs come on, you are in Encanto<\/em>.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n With Beauty and the Beast<\/em>, Sims \u2014 who also received an outstanding choreography for script<\/a>ed programming nomination this year for Paramount+\u2019s Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies<\/em> \u2014 had to tackle a musical that audiences already know extremely well. \u201cPeople who love Beauty and the Beast<\/em> have seen it all,\u201d he says. \u201cThey\u2019ve seen it on ice.\u201d So how do you reinvent a classic?<\/p>\n

\n Sims was nominated, along with co-choreographers Phillip Chbeeb and Makenzie Dustman, for his interpretation of the classic number \u201cBe Our Guest,\u201d featuring Martin Short as the French candelabra Lumi\u00e8re. Working from a concept that originated in part with executive producer Jon M. Chu, the action starts with gloved hands reaching up from below a giant table to portray the dancing cutlery as the musician H.E.R., playing Belle, watches on.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cFunny enough, they were sitting on these little saucers that have wheels on them, so some of [the performers] would have to slide to the other side to do another part,\u201d Sims recalls. \u201cI wish we could have filmed what was happening underneath, because that was the show, what was happening underneath the table when all those props were going around.\u201d They also had to make sure they didn\u2019t hit Short. <\/p>\n

\n During his long career, Sims has worked in the Step Up<\/em> movies<\/a>, among many others, and has spent a lot of time in television \u2014 namely, choreographing RuPaul\u2019s Drag Race<\/em>. This year marks his first recognition by the Emmys, however \u2014 but he admits that the nomination for Pink Ladies <\/em>is a little bittersweet given that Paramount+ has canceled the series, a prequel to the beloved 1950s-set musical, and removed it from its platform. <\/p>\n

\n Sims was \u201cso disappointed\u201d upon learning the series wouldn\u2019t be available for streaming any longer. \u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s ever been a show that has as many original songs and musical numbers in 10 episodes,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n

\n In Pink Ladies<\/em>, Sims paid tribute to the iconic moves of Patricia Birch, who choreographed the 1978 movie and directed its 1982 sequel. \u201cWe were actually doing something that was new,\u201d Sims continues. \u201cIt was groundbreaking, and I just loved it so much. Having it taken down really shows where we are in the industry, as well \u2014 because as artists, all we have is our art that we make.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n When it came to Encanto<\/em>, Sims was very familiar with the material because he had been the choreographer for the animated version. \u201cI got to take it and just blow it up,\u201d he says. On the Bowl\u2019s stage, the opening number, \u201cThe Family Madrigal,\u201d for which Sims received his nom, becomes a colorful spectacle during which the audience meets the principal\u00a0characters. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cEvery person that we introduce has to feel exciting, and the kids should feel like, \u2018Oh, this is magical and this is happening right in front of my eyes!\u2019\u00a0\u201d says Sims. And while it\u2019s the filmed live version that caught the TV Academy\u2019s attention, the most \u201cincredible feeling\u201d for Sims was watching kids react when the show was performed live. \u201cIt was so amazing,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n
