Kissing is \u201cmouth pushing.\u201d Tongues are \u201cflavor muscles.\u201d A bus is a \u201cgroup roll machine.\u201d Horses are \u201chard footed run monsters.\u201d Coffee is \u201cjitter liquid.\u201d Toothpaste is \u201cmouth stone goo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    Such language, much of it borrowed from the web comic of the same name by cartoonist Nathan W. Pyle, is designed to call attention to the inherent absurdity of existence. The \u201cbeings\u201d of \u201cStrange Planet\u201d \u2014 smooth, genderless stick figures who go by they\/them pronouns \u2014\u00a0are not human. But they do navigate situations viewers will find universal: becoming parents (\u201clife givers\u201d); caring for pets (\u201ccreatures\u201d); watching sports (\u201corb kicking activity\u201d). \u201cStrange Planet\u201d simply raises these experiences to the level of abstraction, then evaluates them from an amused distance. The approach is similar to anthropologist Horace Miner\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfu.ca\/~palys\/Miner-1956-BodyRitualAmongTheNacirema.pdf\">famous paper<\/a> \u201cBody Ritual Among the Nacirema,\u201d but with pointed satire swapped out for gentle ribbing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    Pyle launched \u201cStrange Planet\u201d in 2019, and has since expanded the concept to include two print volumes and a card <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>. For the TV series, Pyle partnered and shares creator credit with veteran showrunner Dan Harmon \u2014\u00a0fitting, since the beings of \u201cStrange Planet\u201d bear a passing resemblance to Mr. Meeseeks of \u201cRick and Morty.\u201d Harmon\u2019s series tend to have a more cynical edge, but this adaptation is faithful to Pyle\u2019s sensibility. \u201cStrange Planet\u201d is not part of the adult animation wave that\u2019s taken hold in recent years, with shows like \u201cBoJack Horseman\u201d and the recent \u201cPraise Petey\u201d injecting darkness and emotional nuance into a 2-D landscape. This series is sweet and family-friendly; like its animation style, \u201cStrange Planets\u201d sticks to broad outlines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    In expanding and translating \u201cStrange Planet,\u201d Pyle and his team have new tools with which to execute their vision. Musical numbers are scattered throughout; a theme song proclaims: \u201cHere\u2019s our planet slightly leaning \/ Orbiting a star \/ We find ways to give life meaning \/ Some might seem bizarre.\u201d And over ten half-hour episodes, \u201cStrange Planet\u201d starts to introduce longer-term story lines \u2014 though perhaps not enough to keep audiences fully engaged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    The voice cast of \u201cStrange Planet\u201d includes musician Tunde Adebimpe, \u201cOrange Is the New Black\u201d alum Lori Tan Chinn and co<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>n Demi Adejuyigbe. But for the most part, these performers don\u2019t voice single characters who recur throughout the season; there are dozens, if not hundreds, of beings we encounter throughout \u201cStrange Planet,\u201d rendered deliberately indistinct by the streamlined visual style. Most stories are bite-sized, stand-alone vignettes grouped together by a shared theme. A flight attendant (\u201cair comfort supervisor\u201d) is worried a promotion will isolate her from her former peers while a couple frets over the breakup of a band that brought them together; a child tries to adopt a raccoon (\u201ctrash bear\u201d) while a man babysits a cat for his crush.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    After a few episodes, \u201cStrange Planet\u201d does start to cultivate a running thread centered on the manager of a cliffside restaurant called Careful Now, voiced by Hannah Einbinder of \u201cHacks.\u201d Even then, the character is simply known as The Manager, and her potential love interest (Danny Pudi) is left even more indistinct. Rather than develop these figures into full-fledged protagonists, \u201cStrange Planet\u201d keeps itself a blank slate \u2014\u00a0a stylistic choice that allows drop-in cameos from the likes of Pudi\u2019s former \u201cCommunity\u201d castmate Yvette Nicole Brown, but also blocks the show from cultivating some depth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    \u201cStrange Planet\u201d is undeniably clever and an easy, amusing watch. But its current iteration lacks much deeper resonance beyond its acute yet surface-level observations about the quirks and paradoxes of modern life. The idea that our society is inherently absurd could pack more punch if explored through a larger narrative or tied to a more specific lead character, as full-fledged TV seasons usually afford the chance to do.
