Willis\u2019s case presents a multitude of schemes prosecutors say were meant to undermine the outcome of Georgia\u2019s election.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although Willis said she has no desire to be \u201cfirst or last\u201d in prosecuting Trump, she has signaled her office won\u2019t waste time. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do want to move this case along,\u201d she said Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%98Not_really_realistic\"><\/span>\u2018Not really realistic\u2019<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A six-month timetable is \u201coverly optimistic; very, very ambitious; and not really realistic,\u201d Levine said. The simple act of adjusting to each defendant\u2019s calendar will likely cause extensive delays \u2014 \u201ca continuance for this and a continuance for that,\u201d she said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>That\u2019s especially true for Trump, who is facing three other criminal trials while running his 2024 presidential campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Trial dates in Trump\u2019s New York hush money case and the federal case probing his handling of classified documents are set for March 25 and May 20, respectively. Special counsel Jack Smith has proposed a trial start date of Jan. 2 for charges related to Trump\u2019s attempts to overturn the 2020 election in Washington, though a judge has not yet <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roved it. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With Willis\u2019s proposed March 4 start date, at least three of the four trials would land squarely in the middle of a presidential primary season in full swing, said Jeffrey Cohen, an associate professor at Boston College Law School and a former federal prosecutor.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI would hope that the judge will both respect the need for the public\u2019s right to have a speedy trial \u2026 with the former president\u2019s right to participate in the presidential primary season,\u201d Cohen said. \u201cI suspect around primaries there would be some leeway, but if he\u2019s just holding a rally or something like that, then I would expect that wouldn\u2019t be a good enough reason to delay the trial.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Trumps_strategy_delay\"><\/span>Trump\u2019s strategy: delay<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Attempting to delay proceedings until after the 2024 election and beyond has been a key strategy for Trump\u2019s legal teams in his other criminal cases. Caren Myers Morrison, a law professor at Georgia State University and former federal prosecutor, said to expect \u201ca lot of motions filed\u201d by Trump\u2019s attorneys \u2014 motions\u00a0to move from state to federal court, to dismiss the indictment, to claim privilege over evidence and more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe approach from Trump\u2019s lawyers so far has been maximalist, and there\u2019s no reason to believe they will change their strategy now,\u201d Morrison said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Willis said Monday she plans to try all 19 defendants together, remarks on which The Hill requested additional comment. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If all that occurs, the well of the court alone \u2014 the space separating the parties from the public \u2014 could far exceed 50 people, causing a host of additional logistical issues.<\/p>\n<p>Each defendant is entitled to at least one attorney, though some may opt for more. Willis\u2019s team, court staff and the jury would be present. And Trump would likely be accompanied by Secret Service protection, adding more bodies to the room. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s certainly a fair question to ask, like, do we even have a courtroom that\u2019s going to fit all these people? A counsel table? It\u2019s a logistical hassle,\u201d Levine said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"All_19_defendants_in_one_courtroom\"><\/span>All 19 defendants in one courtroom<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Prosecutors and defense attorneys could benefit from keeping the group whole.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>An overflowing defense side of the courtroom could act as a constant reminder to jurors\u00a0of the sweeping plot Fulton County prosecutors are alleging the defendants engaged in, according to Cohen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThere is some strength in having a lot of defendants sitting at the table in the courtroom, because it shows, visually, the extent of the criminal enterprise,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Defense attorneys for Trump\u2019s 18 co-defendants might argue their clients are \u201cnot like the others,\u201d Cohen added. That narrative is one to which juries are sometimes sympathetic, according to Morrison.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven a jury that might convict some of the top people could take pity on the little guy and acquit them,\u201d Morrison said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Breaking up the single case into multiple cases could help push things forward, according to Morrison. The various alleged schemes presented in the indictment \u2014 from the fake electors plot and pressure campaign on local officials,\u00a0to the Coffee County election equipment breach and efforts to influence a Fulton County election worker \u2014 would make splitting up the case an easier task.<\/p>\n<p>But the experts agreed it\u2019s unlikely all 19 defendants will make it to trial, predicting several will plead guilty and agree to cooperate with the government.\u00a0The sheer scope of their alleged criminal enterprise makes complications all but inevitable, according to Levine. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a challenge to run this whole trial,\u201d she said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> Inc.
